Weed - do I have a stick up my arse?

My neighbour is a big weed smoker. Always outside smoking, presumably so his house doesn't get smoky but it's permeating into mine! On one hand, it doesn't make him the scum of the earth, there are far worse things he could be doing, and he's very friendly, we always exchange pleasantries whenever I go in or out, as he's always out there! But on the other hand, he has kids (maybe 6 and 9 ish?) and I can't help thinking it's not great for their dad to be constantly smoking drugs around them. I have children too and I'm not hugely happy about it being around them either.

I know plenty of people do it, and as I say it's not the worst crime in the world, but it makes me sort of uncomfortable. I'm not really sure I would do anything about it in any case as I'd be worried of the repurcussions. I know the police don't bother with personal use, but does children being involved change anything? He'd probably know it was me who reported him...

Tbh I don't really know what I'm asking. Would it bother you, I guess?

We have a neighbour who smokes constantly and it drives me nuts. She loves beneath us and it makes our bathroom and kitchen fucking stink. I have told the landlord but she still continues. Haven't bothered with the police as they wont do anything but she has a child there probably age 9-11 ish and I do feel so sorry for the child. They stink of weed when they play in the garden. When she opens her front door the stench just hits you. I hate the smell.

pointythings · 27/12/2019 19:56

I don't think you have a stick up your arse - the smoking around children is actually a pretty big negative. Then there's the fact that it is still an illegal drug and that weed these days isn't the same as the stuff that was around when old people like me were growing up. It's definitely a less than ideal situation and I wouldn't like it.

Sparklesocks · 27/12/2019 20:16

It’s completely reasonable to have the feelings you do - some people are ok with it, others aren’t. Generally I’m quite relaxed about it if it’s adults using casually, but I imagine I’d feel differently if the smell was wafting into my house everyday, and if it was around kids.

Evilmorty · 27/12/2019 20:20

Yanbu it stinks to absolute high heaven of shit.

WorraLiberty · 27/12/2019 20:20

Not if he's outside smoking it in the garden, no.

Police really don't have the time or resources to bother about a bit of personal use weed.

It does stink to high heavens though but I suspect it would permeate even more if he smoked it indoors.

Evilmorty · 27/12/2019 20:21

Or mould. Shit or mould. I often think it’s what a zombie would smell like.

DukeChatsworth · 27/12/2019 20:21

Hate weed. Smells grim and turns people difficult. Would HATE a neighbour to be smoking it so I could smell it.

DukeChatsworth · 27/12/2019 20:22

Yes @Evilmorty! It is a zombie smell! Grim as fuck.

Gingerkittykat · 27/12/2019 20:22

My next door neighbour smokes a hell of a lot of weed and I think sometimes it comes through the plug sockets or something and makes my house stink. Once when I came home late at night you could smell it as soon as you got out of the car through his closed bedroom window.

He's a decent guy, I don't care that he smokes weed I just don't want my house to smell of it.

UtuNorantiPralatongsThirdEye · 27/12/2019 20:29

It's not great but I'd prefer it to him being a drinker and around children.

Fifawidow · 27/12/2019 20:29

Do you drink??

fairynick · 27/12/2019 20:32

There’s nothing wrong with a parent smoking weed yadbu about that! The smell is annoying though.

Dutch1e · 27/12/2019 20:33

I understand how it feels when dominant smells permeate your house, it's not great.

But to report someone for basically creating a smell you don't like, when it happens to be illegal in your country giving you some leverage, is a bit shit yes.

LionelRitchieStoleMyNotebook · 27/12/2019 20:38

The smell is annoying, could you ask him to smoke at the bottom end of his garden? He probably doesn't realise it travels. I don't have any more objection to weed than alcohol, in fact someone smoking is a lot less likely to become aggressive than a drinker and he's clearly leaving the house so it doesn't affect the children which seems reasonable behaviour, so just talk to him.

LilouBlue · 27/12/2019 20:40

Yep that was pretty much the thought I was coming to! It would be way worse if he was loud and abusive, which he isn't.

He's not my direct neighbour, his house isn't attached to mine, but due to a slightly weird property layout he basically ends up right outside my kitchen door, which is my front door! The smell is STRONG.

BlueSkyAtChristmas · 27/12/2019 20:46

This would bother me so much. It stinks and is very antisocial. Much worse than smoking because of the smell. I pray that I never have to live next door to a weed smoker. I’m pretty relaxed about noise etc (within reason) but drugs and violence are antisocial behaviour problems that should be reported.

Evilmorty · 27/12/2019 20:50

Alcohol doesn’t stink out your neighbors house though. I can smell weed from a car that’s two in front of me, so going to the garden won’t help. If anything it will make my washing stink of the undeadz

BeanTownNancy · 27/12/2019 20:52

If you're on friendly terms, could you not just politely make him aware that the smell is bothering you? If he's a decent guy, maybe he would stand somewhere else if he knew. I don't judge people for what they do in the privacy of their own homes as long as they aren't hurting anyone, but weed really stinks.

timeforteea · 27/12/2019 21:02

It absolutely stinks and I would hate it if it was me. I love it how people that blatantly smoke it, defend it 😂 Don't justify you're own disgusting habit by making it seem ok for someone else doing it. It's very unfair to make someone else's home smell because of your choices.
As for the smoking it when you have children, it's all fine and dandy to begin with but give it a few years you will be faced with a stone faced, paranoid loser defending their habit because 'weed never killed no one' get a life 🙄🙄🙄🙄

timeforteea · 27/12/2019 21:03

I'm only saying this as I'm waiting for the wave of pro green smokers that will arrive in 5....4..........

ElbasAbsentPenis · 27/12/2019 21:06

Misread thread title as ‘weed - do I stick it up my arse?’ 🤣

WorraLiberty · 27/12/2019 21:08

So did I Elbas.

I was imagining the OP going on holiday and wanting to take some with her Grin

LittleReindeer · 27/12/2019 21:08

If it was my neighbour I’d seriously move house. I don’t want my DC breathing drug smoke (or any smoke at all). Never mind making my washing stink.

WorraLiberty · 27/12/2019 21:14

LittleReindeer, even if it was possible for the OP to move house, there's no saying her new neighbours wouldn't also smoke.

Although I'm not sure her children are actually breathing it in.

Evilmorty · 27/12/2019 21:17
