I’m not saying this to be ungrateful, but sometimes I do wonder what goes through my relatives’ heads at Christmas Grin anyone else? We received:

A tin of peaches for my 12 year old
Clothes that are 5 sizes too big for my 15 year old
Alcohol for me, when I’ve made it very clear that I don’t drink and haven’t for 20 years
A window vacuum
A box of drawing pins

What strange gifts did your family get?

Nothing strange ,but did get a bottle of Prosecco 🤢 from a relative
I hate the stuff and I am not in my twenties anymore 🤷🏻‍♀️

labazsisgoingmad · 26/12/2019 09:28

some very odd presents there MamToTeens. umm im sure every 12 year old dreams of getting a tin of peaches! could have been worse could have been pears!

Fairylea · 26/12/2019 09:30

This was years ago but my mil (who we are now no contact with for many, many reasons) once got me some little metal cowboy boots you stick into jacket potatoes when they’re cooked ConfusedGrin

Smarshian · 26/12/2019 09:31

The only gift I didn’t like was some cheap bubble bath set. I’ll just put in the dcs baths though. It was a filler. Everything else was really lovely and well thought out and the kids were given some lovely things, which they have been happily playing with all morning.

LeahDownTheLane · 26/12/2019 09:32

Nothing strange just the usual Baylis and Harding sets which I hate and ALL the biscuits.

Anniegetyourgun · 26/12/2019 09:33

I've had (and occasionally given) the odd gift over the years which clearly came from a good place but misfired for whatever reason. However, MamToTeens, that doesn't sound like relatives who aren't thinking clearly, it sounds like a deliberate attempt to give you all the least suitable gifts they possibly can. Or they're just off their rockers.

Anyone remember the Grot shop opened by the blessed Reginald Perrin? Sadly fictional - it would definitely be very popular with relatives like these!

Keepmewarm · 26/12/2019 09:33

We all had lovely gifts

Topseyt · 26/12/2019 09:44

Bloody hell, those were awful gifts. Who in their right minds would think a tin of peaches was a suitable gift?

All good here. Very thoughtful gifts so very fortunate.

Lordfrontpaw · 26/12/2019 09:47

DS forgot me (luckily DH had something he wrapped as a ‘oh yes I remember, I got this’) which is ok - he also forgot his grandma and cousins despite many reminders and two shopping trips! Oh well...

imnottoofussed · 26/12/2019 09:48

What size clothes are 5 sizes too big? A 15 year old is probably a size 8-10 adult so did someone get them a size 18-20? That's very odd Confused

iklboodolphrednosedreindeer · 26/12/2019 10:03

The clearly second hand older lady style cream with giant pink roses on dressing gown from FIL & his wife. Hideous. And I never wear dressing gowns. Off to the charity shop that one goes.

Running leggings from BIL. Creepy and more like thermal tights. WTF?

PatchworkElmer · 26/12/2019 10:30

DS got a second hand top from my friend. Now, I’m not averse to this as it’s obviously better for the planet, except:

  1. If she was going to do that, she should’ve mentioned it/ asked if it was ok beforehand- so that I could’ve done the same, instead of paying through the nose getting her daughter something new.
  2. It’s not even nice, and is clearly not our taste- I suspect she bought it because it was cheap. So it’ll go straight to the charity shop.

It’s not about money/ her being skint, before anyone says that. The more I think about it, the more annoyed I am.

She gave my other friend a second hand top for her baby- friend with baby is genuinely skint and had scraped together the money to buy something nice to gift in return 🤦‍♀️

I won’t be bothering next year, despite her “but it’s so nice for the kids!” comments. No, it’s nice for YOUR kid.

JaJoJe · 26/12/2019 17:41

Mens large Y-fronts with the sale price sticker still attached and 1 pair missing... I can only assume they weren't actually gifts and where accidentally packed in the gift bag somehow since I'm the only girl in the family lol.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 26/12/2019 19:31

I got a jumper l don't like but that's it. Nothing odd. Yet. I still have fam to see.

The oddest present l ever got was a giant zip became a small shoulder bag.

GinNsnowmen · 26/12/2019 19:33

Sister got prosecco. She's v clear she never drinks.Confused

bez91 · 26/12/2019 19:34

We got a voucher for Morrison's from the MIL, I mean it'll get used as we shop there weekly, maybe I'm being unreasonable but I thought that was just odd?!?

DramaAlpaca · 26/12/2019 19:40

I got lots of lovely things which I'm very grateful for.

The only thing I don't like is a silk scarf from SIL. She's never seen me in a scarf as I don't wear them, and it's in the one colour I really dislike. I was polite & appreciative of course, but it'll be charity shopped after Christmas.

Whatsername177 · 26/12/2019 19:47

My brother got me a Lynx set. Well, his girlfriend did. They are skint and it is really sweet that they bought a token but I wish they'd saved their money tbh. Me and my other brother pooled our cash to get them a hamper of goodies because they are broke (I feel sorry for my younger brother's girlfriend as she works and he doesn't as he has mental health issues - I wanted to help take the pressure off). We spent about £70 and made it from scratch so they would have stuff they liked; some basic meals (pasta and jar sauce type things) as well as treat foods. We gave it to them just before Christmas so they'd have it for Christmas, but, I think all we did was make them feel obligated to buy us and my kids which wasn't the point. I know it all comes down on db's girlfriend too. In reality, I'm just grateful she's stuck by db because he is a difficult character and she is a saint.

CoffeeCoinnesseur · 26/12/2019 19:48

I got really good and well thought out gifts this year.

Apart from all the bloody Thornton's chocolate, which I've mentioned on every thread I'm on tonight Grin and I've given it all away on the Christmas swaps thread. I don't know why I got shitloads of the stuff this year, and from in-laws as well as my own family too!. It's bizarre. And a real shame, as I'd much prefer a cheap galaxy selection box.

I even don't mind the Baylis and Harding hand washes, I got a few of those - they live in the downstairs loo and mean that I don't need to buy hand wash all year.

foooookinghell · 26/12/2019 19:48

Those bath shower gloves for exfoliating

HRHPrincessMegan · 26/12/2019 19:50

The gift of time with my braggy and materialistic SIL. Happy to swap for her for any unwanted gifts. Anyone?

bugsnfonzmama · 26/12/2019 19:59

My mum bought my 11yo dd tinned mandarins - but only because she loves them! Last year she got punnet of cherry tomatoes and she was stoked lol! She got her other stuff too though!

aibutohavethisusername · 26/12/2019 19:59

I didn’t get any weird gifts this year.
