to use lodgers bathroom

We have a lodger who has their own bedroom and bathroom. He is away for Christmas and DH intends to use the lodgers bathroom as we have family staying with us over Christmas.
I'm not too happy with this as the lodger pays for sole use of the bathroom.

Would you use the bathroom over Christmas or not?

Can you text the lodger and ask? Obviously your DH will thoroughly clean it after and not touch any of the lodger's belongings...

44PumpLane · 12/12/2019 17:08

You surely just ask permission from the lodger?!?!

chardonm · 12/12/2019 17:08

I'd ask and consider small reduction in rent for that time.

Aquamarine1029 · 12/12/2019 17:10

I would ask the lodger, definitely.

BarbedBloom · 12/12/2019 17:10

I wouldn't be happy if I had my private things in there, but would be okay if I had notice. I would ask your lodger.

BMW6 · 12/12/2019 17:10

You should ask permission of course!

Northofsomewhere · 12/12/2019 17:12

I was in this situation as a student, I would've absolutely said yes if asked however would've been a bit annoyed had it been used unasked.
I would also expect any items I've left in there to be moved so they couldn't be used by any other guests. I wouldn't expect a reduction in rent (if I'm away I'm not using it anyway) but would maybe appreciate any left over toilet rolls (I was a cash strapped student).

DisplayPurposesOnly · 12/12/2019 17:14

As a courtesy I would let the lodger know you'll be using 'his' bathroom whilst he's away. (It's your house after all!)

If I were a lodger paying for sole use of a bathroom, I'd expect that to apply whilst I was in residence and I wouldn't really care much what you did when I wasn't there so long as you didn't make free with my posh toiletries, and cleaned the bathroom for my return. I would like to be kept informed though.

HollowTalk · 12/12/2019 17:14

I would use it if he was definitely going to be away. As long as it's cleaned afterwards, who cares?

HollowTalk · 12/12/2019 17:14

I'd see the bathroom as very different to his bedroom.

Purpleartichoke · 12/12/2019 17:14

Ask permission and promise a thorough cleaning before lodger returns.

Aquamarine1029 · 12/12/2019 17:15

Do you have to go through his room to access the bathroom?

lovemenorca · 12/12/2019 17:17

Ask fgs
And offer a discount

Give him the chance to remove all his bathroom items before strangers use his bathroom. And give him a little money off next month’s rent

If you don’t tell him, you have no right being a landlord. Very poor

wishiwasinbarbados · 12/12/2019 17:17

No access problems. We wouldn't go into his bedroom.

cultmaskid · 12/12/2019 17:19

Text and ask him if you give him money

myself2020 · 12/12/2019 17:21

Offer the lodger a reduction in rent for december (20% or so) and ask!

Teachermaths · 12/12/2019 17:21

Text him and ask. Possibly accompany the request with a rent reduction.

Brimful · 12/12/2019 17:22

Definitely ask the lodger!

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 12/12/2019 17:26

So if you want to use something "belonging" to another occupant in the house, do you:

A. Ask the occupant
B. Ask Mumsnet

Ask him!

Fr0g · 12/12/2019 17:28

text? he is a lodger - lives in same house, Speak to him in person& ask FFS.
if not a discount, at least a decent gift

PixiKitKat · 12/12/2019 17:28

Ask him and leave it clean when your done.

heartsonacake · 12/12/2019 17:32

You have to ask him. It is rude to use it without his permission.

BringMeTea · 12/12/2019 17:35

If his bedroom is not accessed then of course you can use it!

ohprettybaby · 12/12/2019 17:36

No. That is very unless you ask if you can and deduct some money from their rent in return.

ohprettybaby · 12/12/2019 17:36

*cfery not very.
