Who is BU about Christmas Tree decorations?

DH and I do not see eye to eye on this topical topic.

We have a small tree in the family room for the DC with non-breakable baubles in bright colours and tinsel etc, and a more tasteful red and gold tree in the front “adults only” (in theory!) room.

Over the last couple of years, DH has been sneaking additional baubles onto the tasteful tree. And I hate them. I really don’t think I am being precious; it’s not that they’re not quite the same size or colour. It’s that they are great big random shapes, and that they are hideous.

This year he has added a roast turkey on a platter, a car with a Christmas tree on the roof, a neon blue glass crab, a glittery green lizard, and a rainbow ice lolly. The last four aren’t even remotely related to Christmas FFS.

I keep hiding them around the back of the tree (“so people can see them as they come up to the front door, darling”), and he keeps moving them to front centre.

I say they are ugly and they just plain don’t go. He says I am being snobby (I’m not, they were more money than the red and gold ones!), and that his DM bought them for us (yes but only because he wanted them, and she spoils us; left to herself, she buys pretty ones).

We can’t put them on the DC tree because they’re fragile and the DC are too young. Plus, I don’t want to be explaining a Christmas lobster to a 5 year old and a 3 year old and a 1 year old Xmas Hmm.

So, who IBU? Should he be allowed to have whatever makes him happy, or should he leave my lovely tree alone and stop spoiling it with ugly things?

(Disclaimer: Light hearted but he might end up with a Christmas lizard up the arse if he keeps it up!)

Life is too short for “tasteful” trees.

ferrier · 09/12/2019 12:55

Get him his own tree would be my solution. No way would he be messing up my tasteful tree 😁

Chamomileteaplease · 09/12/2019 12:56

One of the joys of living with someone Grin.

Time to get a third tree Smile.

AnneTwackie · 09/12/2019 12:56

Your husband’s decorations sound lovely!

actiongirl1978 · 09/12/2019 12:57

Shock at Xmas decs being too precious for children.

We've always just put everything on one tree, no child has ever attempted to climb the tree or eat a glass bauble...

Worst thing that happened was DS who was about 3 took a pair of scissors to all the hanging strings.

ScribblyGum · 09/12/2019 12:58

You’re gonna need a bigger tree for the the family room to include the Christmas lobsters et al. Then your dh can knock himself out with that one.

Shock at Xmas decs being too precious for children.

We’ve got some that are sentimental and very breakable. No way they’re going anywhere near a child.

I love the fact that you hide them round the back of the tree and he moves them to the front!

Something to laugh about as the years go by.

BendingSpoons · 09/12/2019 12:59

He should get as much say as you. I'm imagining a half tastefully decorated tree and a half clashing eclectic tree! Is he trying to wind you up on purpose though? I can imagine my dad doing that!

Chocolatemouse84 · 09/12/2019 12:59

Yabu... Its as much his tree to decorate as it is yours so you should both get a selection of decorations that each of you like. He obviously likes his,its not his fault you don't!

fligglepige · 09/12/2019 13:00

When DH yaps at me for daft things like this I say wouldn't you miss my crisp crunching/snoring/tacky decorations if I died tomorrow?! Life is too short to let these little things bother you, just embrace him and his Christmas lizards.

Picklypickles · 09/12/2019 13:01

Christmas is meant to be fun, its not just for show! I'm now googling glittery green lizard baubles!

GhostHoward · 09/12/2019 13:01

We have a Christmas Beaver on our tree. My middle child chose it when he was 2 and it's the most hideous thing ever.....so naturally it gets front and centre placement EVERY year, because we love it so much.

YABU..I want a Christmas lobster!!

1066vegan · 09/12/2019 13:02

His decorations sound hideous. Can he have his own tree? Preferably in a shed!

CameraTime · 09/12/2019 13:02

When you say they're breakable, would they shatter into dangerous pieces, or into nice safe bits that could be swept up and binned. Because if it's the latter...

Also, get DH to tell the story of the Christmas lobster. Really big it up to the kids while he's out, and then get them to ask as soon as he comes in.

bilbodog · 09/12/2019 13:02

I prefer a very eclectic tree so your DHs decorations would look fab on my tree!

Send DH this way, we have several neon llamas, an NFL christmas helmet bauble, and a mr hanky the christmas poo on ours.

Ninkanink · 09/12/2019 13:05

Get him a little tabletop tree and he can decorate it to his heart’s content! It’s the season of peace and goodwill and all that, after all.

Batqueen · 09/12/2019 13:07

Third tree. I would be upset if my pretty tree got messed up

HunterHearstHelmsley · 09/12/2019 13:10

He's improving the tree. My sister insists on a boring tasteful tree. I always think it would benefit from a bit of tinsel.

Crunchymum · 09/12/2019 13:13

We have a tree for the kids which is fake, full of tat and covered in coloured lights and garish tinsel (not to mention non matching baubles!!)

But I love my actual tree. It's real, massive, coordinated and something I adore to dress and look at every single year.

Any stray baubles would be removed.

JasonPollack · 09/12/2019 13:14

Oh no, they've fallen off and accidentally broken!

MissMatty2hats · 09/12/2019 13:15

I love my Christmas lobster! I gave up the battle for a tasteful tree years ago. Embrace the madness.

seven201 · 09/12/2019 13:16

Yabu. I much prefer a fun tree to a tasteful tree. It's his tree too.

BlueJava · 09/12/2019 13:16

I wouldn't care about non-mathching stuff- but I'd be happy he wanted to do "Christmassy" things!
