Who is BU about Christmas Tree decorations?

DH and I do not see eye to eye on this topical topic.

We have a small tree in the family room for the DC with non-breakable baubles in bright colours and tinsel etc, and a more tasteful red and gold tree in the front “adults only” (in theory!) room.

Over the last couple of years, DH has been sneaking additional baubles onto the tasteful tree. And I hate them. I really don’t think I am being precious; it’s not that they’re not quite the same size or colour. It’s that they are great big random shapes, and that they are hideous.

This year he has added a roast turkey on a platter, a car with a Christmas tree on the roof, a neon blue glass crab, a glittery green lizard, and a rainbow ice lolly. The last four aren’t even remotely related to Christmas FFS.

I keep hiding them around the back of the tree (“so people can see them as they come up to the front door, darling”), and he keeps moving them to front centre.

I say they are ugly and they just plain don’t go. He says I am being snobby (I’m not, they were more money than the red and gold ones!), and that his DM bought them for us (yes but only because he wanted them, and she spoils us; left to herself, she buys pretty ones).

We can’t put them on the DC tree because they’re fragile and the DC are too young. Plus, I don’t want to be explaining a Christmas lobster to a 5 year old and a 3 year old and a 1 year old Xmas Hmm.

So, who IBU? Should he be allowed to have whatever makes him happy, or should he leave my lovely tree alone and stop spoiling it with ugly things?

(Disclaimer: Light hearted but he might end up with a Christmas lizard up the arse if he keeps it up!)

Ah, someone else who missed the “light hearted” and the fact that we play games with hiding and displaying them.

Psssst, that pole isn’t up MY arse, Miss Hissy!

It's Christmas FFS !

Why on earth do you think your idea of 'nice' decorations is more important than your DH's ??

Fun and silliness is what kids remember about christmas, NOT 'naice' decorations !

Live a little and enjoy the fun and silliness. (without the pole up your a**e).

Yabu. "Tasteful" (aka soul-less) red and gold trees belong in department stores, not homes. We have sparkly dinosaurs, a London taxi, a red bus, a spitfire, a Red Arrow and squirrels among other tree decorations.

I think I might have found the MN tree decoration (does anyone remember the rude embroidered cushions?)

Ok, ours is the JL one and it looks like this, but they no longer have it online (the lizard must have been in last year’s crop of tree ruining additions!):

However there’s a few others online; there’s one you can personalise with a name and a sphere bauble with a picture of a gecko on it!

Can you link to the lizard please? Ds14 has yet to choose “his” bauble this year and would love that!

I don't get "tasteful" trees that are all themed and coordinated. I think they look ridiculous and uptight.
One of my relatives does themed trees and DH and I find it hilarious, which is totally unreasonable on our part because I can't stand tinsel so our tree never has tinsel on.

You would hate my tree!!
I love Christmas trees with various decorations on them. I have a ‘base layer’ of matching ones and then we add the additional ones

I think the ‘adult’ tree should have your DH choices on it too!

Sorry to hear about your DH's erection problems ... I'd cut my losses and send him to Norway Smile

You do know that the trees your children will remember are the fun ones with the novelty baubles, not the ‘tasteful’ ones.

Surely you can have the tasteful, boring ones, when the children have left home.

I kinda like the jokey, gaudy baubles that are around at the moment and have sent the turkey platter (with separate brussel sprouts) to one friend and a giant hamburger and box of fries to another one as gifts. However, my tree is done in the 'best possible taste' so double standards. Perhaps your DH has a different sense of humour to you and expresses it on his choice of Christmas decorations. Perhaps a third tree to himself?

Wow, that is quite the vase! I suspect you’d get on with my DH. We have all sorts of other random things that he loves around the house (shiny weird diving helmet and Victorian glass eye and washing cup, I’m looking at you for starters [I think the actual glass eye is a replica; I wouldn’t sleep at night otherwise for fear it would murder me in my bed]).

I put a link to the Christmas lobster somewhere higher up the thread. I suspect they’ve still got them in stock (as they will only have sold one so far Grin)!

Well thanks - now I NEED a Christmas lobster decoration! Where are they from?

I am all for tasteful trees but honestly those "ugly" decorations are probably the ones that your kids will be looking forward to seeing every Christmas into their teens +++ rather than the tasteful decorations. My father bought Christmas decorations to add to my mothers tasteful tree. My brother and I are nearly forty but we still make a point of taking a photo of us all with the "ugly" decorations".

@NotTheMrMenAgain
I also have a tarsus on my tree. I always position it where I can see it - I live in hope that one day, the door will open and out will pop a tiny Dr!

Bloody hell, shere is the closest I can get, you definitely wouldn't see anything similar in Next or indeed any shop within the last forty yearsGrin (Sorry to derail the thread with the vase btw Blush)

Definitely too outing for a proper photo but imagine if these two vases fell in love in the late 70s and had a baby....

Now I genuinely love it, DH is fond of eclectic kitsch himself, he wanted to get married by Elvis in Vegas Grinbut even he draws the line at this vase Shock

PS I've just hidden it behind the curtain near the plug socket where he will charge his phone later so he will come across it unexpectedly in the lamplight.

Have you bought another tree yet?

This year I've found I've got so many food-related baubles that I have bought another tree for them - will put it in the kitchen if I can clear a corner space for it. Some are like the box of fries another poster pictured, some are veg, some are fruits, some are cakes and biscuits. It'll be quite bonkers spiffing I'm sure Grin

I'm not a fan of all matchy-matchy themed trees, much prefer the eclectic mish-mash of family treasures look. It's much more interesting in my mind. I could gaze lovingly at my tree for hours, with its quirky decorations and Pickwick fairy lights...
