to find most sleb environmental campaigners annoying and patronising hypocrites?

There was a story on the BBC breakfast showB this morning about a sleb who is an environmental campaigner. I have no idea who she is, but am I the only one who finds most people like her somewhat annoying, patronising and hypocritical?

She openly admits to flying "for her job", but she "offsets" her carbon emissions. Aren't carbon offsets kind of like drinking diet coke, but still scoffing down cake?

Even so, she is on a campgain to "save the world" by encouraging people to only boil enough water for the exact no of cups of coffee we're going to drink, and turn off lights when we're out.

Why on earth should I listen to her, what authority does she have?

(Sorry if this has been done to death elsewhere!)

LOVED Ruth Jones' comments about Gwennie on the set of 'Emma'. Ruth had a bit part.

Journo: Did you bond with Gwyneth Paltrow while making Emma?

Ruth: That was my first film and she was in the title role. From her point of view, I was a walk-on artist with a line and a look, so she wasn?t going to waste her time on me ? and it showed. I think you should treat everyone with a bit of respect because you never know when you?re going to meet them again.

I met Gwynnie very briefly once backstage at a concert. She was incredibly snotty, not only to me, a humble 'nobody' hack, but to everyone other than her husband and the star of the show. She actually looked right through the hospitality staff and ignored them when they spoke. I felt like kicking her in her skinny shins.

LoveAngel · 22/08/2007 15:48

p.s. her husband, as drippy as he is, was really nice, actually.

expatinscotland · 22/08/2007 15:52

The only reason she ever became an actress was because her father had some very powerful friends in the industry.

Because she's about as talented as a bag of spanners.

I have to agree@expat. Am I the only one who thinks her English accent is appalling? Sounds like she went to the Dick Van Dyck School of Dialects.

saythatagain · 22/08/2007 15:54

That Alex chap has people running his farm for him FGS - it's all smoke and mirrors with all these types; they really don't live in the real world IMO.

expatinscotland · 22/08/2007 15:54

She went to some boarding school in New England where they all try to pretend their British toffs.

And fail miserably.

aloha · 22/08/2007 15:56

It's the lecturing that gets me so inflamed though. Richard Branson's pleased-with-himself, fat-lipped teenage son with the room temp IQ telling ME how to be more eco made me throw the paper across the room.

expatinscotland · 22/08/2007 15:59

Yes, the pontificating is even more annoying because it assumes everyone else is stupider than they are.

expatinscotland · 22/08/2007 15:59

they're

aloha · 22/08/2007 16:00

I was one earnestly lectured by Geri Halliwell

SueBaroo · 22/08/2007 16:00

Has to be Bono for me. Pontificating arse.

And as much as I'd give David Tennant a jolly good seeing to, I sobbed into my mint madness moments when I listened to him waffling about all this.

LoveAngel · 22/08/2007 16:02

Oh God, yes, Bono! What an arse.

expatinscotland · 22/08/2007 16:02

I would have found that right on the cusp of unbearable, aloha. The Geri Halliwell thing, that is.

suzycreamcheese · 22/08/2007 16:02

was it bruce paltrow?...
actually, i have never actually seen one of her films and cant name any either...or heard her speak i think..

just scan the mags when i can..

aloha · 22/08/2007 16:03

I was very hard to prevent my eyes from rolling about like Paris Hilton at that point, Expat.

expatinscotland · 22/08/2007 16:05

Yes, her father was Bruce Paltrow.

Although I don't see how that can be seeing as she's such a cow.

expatinscotland · 22/08/2007 16:06

I'd have found it hard to supress a wry chuckle, aloha.

Sheherazadethegoat · 22/08/2007 16:07

well i have just bought a lottery ticket so hopefully i will win millions so i can roll around in a huge 4x4 tutting at you mortals for not separating your plastics.

aloha · 22/08/2007 16:08

What do you bet that Trudie Styler does not rinse out her own milk bottles, eh?
She really pees me off.

suzycreamcheese · 22/08/2007 16:08

what did geri lecture on aloha?
is she un ambassador for something?

pity the poor people inflicted with these numpties ..'to help'...

expatinscotland · 22/08/2007 16:09

Can I come and live on your farm, goat? I promise not to leave too much of a carbon footprint.

EricL · 22/08/2007 16:09

Good on you for bringing it up. I hate it all too - they are all a bunch of patronising hypocrites. Do they really think we need them to tell us unwashed masses how to live our lives ethically?

I would have less impact on the environment than them even if they spent half the yaear in a mouldy cave.

Which i wish they did. Then i would listen to them. Maybe.

They are just doing it to justify their pointless lives and to 'offset' their guilt.

Perhaps if they stopped opening their mouths so much it would decrease the CO2 emissions dramatically.

speedymama · 22/08/2007 16:09

And they all fly and drive gas guzzling monstrosities!

I am not against flying or driving at all. What I am against is the do as I say but not as I do fraternity because tonne for tonne, most of us mere mortals would never have carbon footprints that would even approach a tenth of theirs.

Sheherazadethegoat · 22/08/2007 16:11

certainly expat! we shall employ alex james to shovel shit and throw rotten fruit at.
