Am I being unreasonable to think there must be more than one blimmin houmous factory in the whole of the UK?
Its never coming back is it ?
I've tried making my own and it's a faff (and horrible).

Where are you that there is no hummous?

There is gazillions of it in London

MsVestibule · 17/11/2019 22:51

Just bought 2 packs of it in the NE this morning - is there a shortage that I haven't heard about???

AnneLovesGilbert · 17/11/2019 22:52

What do you find a faff? I make at least one lot a week, takes about 3 minutes, cheap as chips, you can tweak it depending on what you fancy and you get way more from a tin of chickpeas than in a bought tub.

AmbitiouslyFit · 17/11/2019 22:53

Overnight chickpeas in water
Boil it
Blend it with garlic and tahini sauce and lemon juice and cumin powder

Voila

Serve with olive oil and olives

Serin · 17/11/2019 22:54

I'm in the NW, there has been none for weeks here, since the salmonella scare.
Well there is the sabra brand but it's flying off the shelves, even at £2 a pot.

Just googled. Apparently the company that supplies pretty much all the supermarkets with hummus has issued a recall notice due to a salmonella scare. My local Asda had no own brand hummus on Friday, only that posher brand. Can't remember what it's called.

Herland · 17/11/2019 22:54

It was out of my local area for a while after a recall (maybe listeria??) but is back now.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 17/11/2019 22:55

Tesco is chock full of the stuff (NE).

Hope it's fine as I've demolished a whole tub this weekend.

Serin · 17/11/2019 22:56

AmbitiouslyFit

Maybe that's what mine missing.
Will add cumin!

Also, why are there so many different ways to spell it?

Serin · 17/11/2019 22:57

Our Tesco, Aldi, Sainsburys and Lidl had none today.
Not even Spar Sad

If you make your own you need loads more garlic paste, lemon juice, salt and cumin than you think you do. Add them all in small doses until you get the right blend. Also, weirdly, the magic ingredient for consistency is water. Took me years wondering why my home made houmous was so sludgy to realise adding water until it is silky smooth is the answer.

AdaColeman · 17/11/2019 23:01

Ocado seem to have plenty. Or what about making something like pea and garlic puree, that wouldn't be as much faff as chickpeas.

nespressowoo · 17/11/2019 23:02

I'm NW too. Asda were out but Aldi had some

CodenameVillanelle · 17/11/2019 23:07

Also, why are there so many different ways to spell it?

Because it's an Arabic word and obviously spelt in the Arabic alphabet. When Arabic words are translated into the modern Latin alphabet spellings can be very loose because you are approximating a sound that exists in a different alphabet.

Herland · 17/11/2019 23:07

Butter bean hummous is amazing.

Stupiddriver1 · 17/11/2019 23:08

Co-op hummus wasn’t on the recall according to dh.

PickAChew · 17/11/2019 23:08

Who moose?

Serin · 17/11/2019 23:09

newdeer Thanks for that, never thought of adding water.
Glad to hear Aldi had some.

dementedpixie · 17/11/2019 23:10

Tesco wasnt either.

AnneLovesGilbert · 17/11/2019 23:10

It is Herland! I’ve been switching things up lately with my pulses and butter beans make an amazing one.

PointlessUsername · 17/11/2019 23:13

Costco do a huge pot for something like £3.49.

Pilot12 · 17/11/2019 23:15

I'm in Scotland and there was none in Aldi or Tesco yesterday. My four year old has been asking for it all day! Will probably be able to get some mid week now the weekend rush is over.

Lulualla · 17/11/2019 23:19

Don't add plain water. Save the chickpea water when you empty the tin and add that.

ClientListQueen · 17/11/2019 23:22

Lancashire here, Sainsbury's had loads in
