I'm aware iabu.

A1 or M6? GLASGOW to Bedford area.

Cast your vote (if anyone's up this time on a Saturday)

A1

BarbaraofSeville · 16/11/2019 07:00

What day and time?

9/10 I would pick the A1, as the M6 is far more prone to accidents and delays, but if in darkness, winter, bad fog or high winds, I'd check conditions first as you have to cross the A66 to get to the A1, which is a fun road to drive and breaks up the motorway monotony but can be prone to lorries being blown over or being blocked by snow.

Blankiefan · 16/11/2019 07:04

Definitely M6 then M6 toll road to avoid Birmingham.

Or get the train. Ooft - what a drive.

twoheaped · 16/11/2019 07:06

M6 and pray for no accidents from 19 down to 15, which always seems to be affected.

Sofast · 16/11/2019 07:12

M6. We dont live far from newcastle but always use the west when travelling

Bouncebacker · 16/11/2019 07:14

M6 - I live in Edinburgh and cut across country for the M6

runoutofideasnow · 16/11/2019 07:15

We're on our way just now. We're about 40 miles north of Carlisle.
We can't take the train, too many changes through London and we have our preschooler with us. We've done the drive a few times actually and switch between m6 & a1 - both have their issues so can't decide which to take today.
More votes for m6 which is what I'm leaning towards despite google maps saying a1 is slightly quicker.

M6 and M6 toll. We are Glasgow and drive to France every year, we've done various combinations. I prefer M6 simply because there are much more service stations.

BarbaraofSeville · 16/11/2019 07:16

Curious as to why people would pick the M6, a route that is longer in both time and distance before any delays, according to Google maps just now, and is prone to further delays on top?

If we're talking about today or any time soon, the caveat about bad weather doesn't really apply.

Mumdiva99 · 16/11/2019 07:17

Whatever Google tells you to do at the time you leave. I always find it quickest. (Next time fly from Luton or train from/to CMK - there's a direct train)

BarbaraofSeville · 16/11/2019 07:17

There's loads of services on the A1 Confused.

Seadragonusgiganticusmaximus · 16/11/2019 07:18

A1. And google maps agrees with me, although only by 7 minutes! But echo what others have said about accidents and works on the M6. The A1 just seems more reliable. And going over the pennines on the A66 is beautiful.

runoutofideasnow · 16/11/2019 07:19

@Mumdiva99 I flew 2 weeks ago as I was travelling by myself but DH & DS coming this time and the person we're visiting is quite a distance from Luton.

My so you can stop at the wonderful Tebay services! Both roads equally frustrating thoigh in my experience. Good luck!

Teachermaths · 16/11/2019 07:21

Whatever Google says is faster!

countrygirl99 · 16/11/2019 07:21

Never mind how to get here. The big question is what's the best route around all the road works in Bedford.

Henhophouse · 16/11/2019 07:22

We drive from the east of England to Aberdeen quite regularly, and we ALWAYS use the M6. The A1 is a pissy road, and the M6 is quicker, and there are more conveniences.

runoutofideasnow · 16/11/2019 07:22

Google says a1 by 10 minutes. Hmmmm anyone know if there's any road works on either route just now? Trying to get google to tell me but it's playing funny buggers.

We've got the drive back up tomorrow too :O I'm glad ds is a good traveller. He's sleeping at the moment.

There are some roadworks on the A1, but the time stated by Google maps will include any delay, which isn't much, I used that route last week.

I only use the M6 between Manchester and Birmingham if it is absolutely unavoidable as there's always delays, and this thread seems to explain why as there's loads of people using it when they shouldn't be.

Will stick to the much quieter and usually faster A1.

BarbaraofSeville · 16/11/2019 07:32

You could do one journey on each road and see which you prefer OP.

BlouseAndSkirt · 16/11/2019 07:37

I wouldn’t do the Northbound journey home on the M6. Spent too many years of my life stationary in endless jams before the Blackpool / Liverpool junctions. Hours.

DivGirl · 16/11/2019 07:39

A1 every time! The M6 is the most boring drive in Britain.

ForalltheSaints · 16/11/2019 07:41

Virgin trains to Euston and then Thameslink to Bedford.

Runningonempty84 · 16/11/2019 07:42

M6. So you can stop at Tebay for coffee and cake and lovely cheese.
