I'm aware iabu.

A1 or M6? GLASGOW to Bedford area.

Cast your vote (if anyone's up this time on a Saturday)

With a preschooler, A1 every time! We do this drive a lot. More places to stop or just pull over in case of sick/toilet/hungry/tantrum. Opportunity for a sit down coffee halfway. And quicker than motorway cos less tailbacks.

RitaMorenoMuppetShow · 16/11/2019 07:47

And you could still stop at Tebay (yay!) as you’d shimmy over to the A1 after that.

runoutofideasnow · 16/11/2019 07:49

'Waze' is saying a1 too so that's us decided.

Passing Carlisle now, we'll cut off at Penrith.

hiddenmnetter · 16/11/2019 07:50

Yeah whatever Waze or Google maps says.

AJPTaylor · 16/11/2019 07:54

I always use waze app which is pretty good for roadworks accidents and diversions

Theworldisfullofgs · 16/11/2019 07:55

A1.
Especially since a lot of the roundabouts are gone.

runoutofideasnow · 16/11/2019 07:58

We'll stop at scotch corner (assuming ds is still happy/sleeping) as it's half way. I do prefer Tebay but want to get as far south as possible before stopping.

Longdistance · 16/11/2019 08:00

A1 for sure.

I drive up north quite often and take the A1. I’m not that far from Bedford. When I take the Mway I get stung every time.

Btw, if you’re going to end up on the M1, don’t it’s mega busy on a Saturday near Milton Keynes and is the most boring journey scenery wise.

nonevernotever · 16/11/2019 08:10

I love the a1. Gets my vote every time

Ghoulestofmums · 16/11/2019 08:12

The A1 in NOrth Notts was closed by floods yesterday. Don’t know about tiday

PineappleDanish · 16/11/2019 08:16

I am in Glasgow. M74 south, M6 as far as Penrith, across to Scotch Corner, then south.

Don't even think about across to Edinburgh on the M8 then A1 south from there. It's not even dual carriageway the whole way.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 16/11/2019 08:20

PineappleDanish has it. I'm in Cumbria and I'd use the fast quiet bit of M6 (seriously, above Shap it is empty!) and then cut across at Penrith, same.

runoutofideasnow · 16/11/2019 08:22

That's our plan Smile we're about 30 minutes from Scotch corner. DS has just woken.

It's very foggy Sad

A66, then A1 every time. There's a morrisons just off junction 48 which we stop at for petrol and refreshments if needed.

popthepopcorn · 16/11/2019 08:44

Definitely the A1

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 16/11/2019 08:48

I'd go M6 A50 M1. Avoids Birmingham and no toll, plus petrol at non motorway prices on the A50.

derxa · 16/11/2019 08:49

Stop at the lovely cafe 66 which used to be the little chef

Scotch Corner is so shit

runoutofideasnow · 16/11/2019 08:49

We filled our tank in Glasgow anyway, won't have to refuel.

Ginfordinner · 16/11/2019 08:52

Scotch Corner services has a horrible fiddly car park. The roadworks near Leeming are pretty straightforward and have a 60 mph limit. We drive between Leeds and Morpeth regularly and know that part of the A1 pretty well.

PineappleDanish · 16/11/2019 08:54

The only disadvantage to cutting off at Penrith is that you miss the lovely services at Tebay. Their bacon and haggis roll is a thing of wonder.

FizzyIce · 16/11/2019 08:58

Yep, A1.

JorisBonson · 16/11/2019 08:59

A1 for sure. Take in the abundance of sex shops.

Ginfordinner · 16/11/2019 09:10

There aren't that many services on the A1 these days, not since Little Thief Chef closed down.

BarbaraofSeville · 16/11/2019 09:36

How many services do people want, on the section that OPs talking using, there's Scotch Corner, numerous garages, the McDonald's at Leeming Bar, Wetherby, Ferrybridge, more garages and cafes, Blyth, a retail park at Newark, the McDonald's and garages at the Lincoln junction, a couple more services in the Grantham and Stamford areas and a big Extra thing near Peterborough and another at the M11 turn, plus probably more I've forgotten about and the likes of the Morrisons mentioned upthread just off the Boroughbridge junction.
