@BarbaraofSeville GrinGrin
We stopped for 15 minutes at scotch corner and may do another toilet stop in the last hour of the journey. I'd rather not add time onto our journey by fannying about at services anyway.

Oh no, you stopped at the wrong place!!!
There is a farm shop on the a66 (Mainsgill farm shop) only a few miles before Scotch corner. Best fruit scones ever. Lovely playground for kids and just awesome.

Ginfordinner · 16/11/2019 15:37

Not exactly playground weather today though

tillytrotter1 · 16/11/2019 15:47

We drive from East Anglia to Edinburgh, we use the A1 then the A68, like an Alton Towers white knuckle ride but free!

AlpacaGoodnight · 16/11/2019 15:49

Definitely M6, nicer to drive, better services. We always cut across the country to go M6 rather than down the closer A1

runoutofideasnow · 16/11/2019 17:21

@honeybeetheoneandonly we only stopped for 15 minutes.

We made it in 6 hours 15 mins so not bad going.

Good going!

I know you're there now, but it's always worth checking google maps for live traffic data and closures. We often check traffic England as well especially as he likes to leave very early and it's good for planned overnight closures.

DH quite often has to drive from Lancashire to Cambridge, usually prefers the A1 especially now so much of the M6 is 'smart motorway' with narrow lanes. But the other obvious variable, especially at this time of year, is the weather. Sometimes it's bad over the Pennines if you take the A1, sometimes there's snow or whatever coming in from the west on the M6. It's good there's two quite different routes available.

I live very near there. Wasn't the best of weather today for a playground though.

Glad you got there OP.

Both are here hideous! Roadworks on both. I'd do M6 down to the M62, then across and down the M1.

honeyloops · 16/11/2019 17:43

Argh but Honeyroar the M62 is worse than the M6 and the A1 combined (unless it's the middle of the night)!

Honeyroar · 16/11/2019 17:50

I know, but it's not too much of it to do, and it's ok at weekend. I do Manchester to London regularly and the M6 is just getting worse and worse (I even was stuck in standstill traffic for an hour at 5am this week!)

honeyloops · 16/11/2019 19:28

Good point - and to be fair the Stafford to Birmingham stretch of the M6 is where I've had the most nightmares traffic-wise! I dream of a world either without the average 50 zone or one where people know how to drive in average 50 zone...

honeybeetheoneandonly · 16/11/2019 19:52

I just love Mainsgill. I've even taken detours to pop in and there might have been the odd holiday specifically booked to allow a pit stop there. Smile

@honeybeetheoneandonly, is that the place with the camel? I was very surprised to see it appearing out of the mist.

honeybeetheoneandonly · 17/11/2019 00:08

@ThatLibraryMiss Yes, camel and alpacas among others. A holiday is not a holiday until we've stopped there. Last spring the kids saw lambs being born. I'm just loving the fruit scones, DHs loves their produce and the kids love the playground. There is usually stuff to try. It's my happy place.

BingoLittlesUncle · 17/11/2019 00:34

Done both from South London. M6 every time.

BingoLittlesUncle · 17/11/2019 00:35

Sorry that should say S London -> Glasogow.
