6 year olds ears pierced for first time

No judging but I had my daughters ears pierced 3 weeks ago after her asking for a couple of years, I talked with her about pain and what was involved so she knew. Anyway we went to Claire’s and one of the ears has been perfect however the other one I have had problems since day one as always seems to be gungy, I am still cleaning with the solution they provide but I think the earring is sitting a little too tight on this ear as it’s slightly bigger than the other so I am trying to get the butterfly back off but it seems well stuck on,even tried the good ear too and that’s not moving 😨 has anyone got any tips please, tia

I would leave the earring in place and bathe with salted cool boiled water. Dont turn the earring either

YABU.

Miakaceysmummy22 · 27/10/2019 08:55

Okay thanks so you would recommend not trying to take the back off just yet to loosen?

This is exactly why you shouldn’t get them done at Claire’s

greypetex · 27/10/2019 08:58

It's probably infected and a little swollen, which would account for the fit being tighter than the other ear. I would take her to the nurse tomorrow to have it checked, if you can, even see a pharmacist today.

dementedpixie · 27/10/2019 09:04

It could just be swollen rather than infected. They can get a bit crusty as they heal. Those earrings normally have a back that fits into a groove on the stem of it. Has it gone further than the groove or is the lobe just swollen?

keepingbees · 27/10/2019 09:07

Take her to a piercing shop and let them have a look. They will be able to see if it's too tight or swollen and advise you what best to do. Don't remove it while it's sore or infected.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 27/10/2019 09:09

I know it's too late now but for the love of god do not go to Claire's for piercings in the future! How they are still allowed to pierce is beyond me. Go to a professional reputable piercer.

motherheroic · 27/10/2019 09:11

Go to a PROFESSIONAL piercer and let them look at it.

Iamnotagoddess · 27/10/2019 09:13

Surely there is a standard training for ear piercing?

A Saturday sales assistant at Claire’s would have to reach the same standard as a sales assistant in a jewellers?

That wasn’t what the OP asked anyway.

I took my daughter yesterday to get hers done at a tattoo/piercing studio and was surprised that the earrings came with flat backs instead of butterfly. They said that children should never wear butterfly backs until the ears have healed as the swelling can cause them to get stuck in the ear plus it is more painful to sleep on.

I would take her to a piercing studio and get them to have a look and exchange for flat backs once hers ears have healed.

Also, they said NEVER twist earrings to clean - all you are doing is ripped the tissue that has started to heal and can introduce all sorts of germs. You should spray with a saline solution and leave them alone. A warm calamine teabag can also help any swelling and soreness if needed

Miakaceysmummy22 · 27/10/2019 09:14

Dementedpixie like the end of stem part Is sitting just inbetween the butterfly back it’s not sticking out past it so I would say it’s probably sitting on the groove. I might take her Claire’s tomorrow and just ask if the piercing is sitting right in the ear. It’s only hurting her if I start touching it and it’s not red just a little gungy when I push the earring forward to clean. Thanks for all the advice everyone.

Iamnotagoddess - the woman I went to yesterday used to work in Claire's and she said their training is a 1 day course were you use a teddy bear to practice on. She has now been a professional piercer for years and it took her much longer to get professionally qualified. She also used the needle with my little girl and said she cannot understand how the guns are still legally allowed

Waxonwaxoff0 · 27/10/2019 09:16

Because Claire's use piercing guns, which cannot be sterilised properly and can cause trauma to the flesh. Proper piercing studios use needles which are a lot cleaner and safer.

CaptainTurdseye · 27/10/2019 09:17

Don’t take her back to Claire’s, take her to a proper piercer.

Go to a professional piercing studio

dementedpixie · 27/10/2019 09:19

I got a hole repierced at a tattoo studio and it is a little ball that screws on at the back rather than a butterfly. Piercing was done with a needle too

Miakaceysmummy22 · 27/10/2019 09:19

Just read some more of the reply’s maybe best if I take her to a piercing place to check rather than Claire’s, and like I said in my original post not here for all the judging comments which I am ignoring just wanted advice, thanks for those that have given advice

I definitely wouldn’t go back to Claires, I’ve got about 7 piercings and they’re just not professionals (got a couple done with them when I was young), go to a tattoo/piercing place and they will know exactly what to do. Good luck!

Iamnotagoddess · 27/10/2019 09:19

If the guns are that bad I am surprised it is still ok to use them 🤷‍♀️

Bobthefisherghoulswife · 27/10/2019 09:19

I wouldn't return to Claires personally, I would take her to see a piercer, my suggestion is someone in a tattoo studio as they have extremely high standards for cleanliness etc.

Hoppinggreen · 27/10/2019 09:20

She’s 6, she didn’t have any concept of what having a piercing involves

greypetex · 27/10/2019 09:23

I might take her Claire’s tomorrow and just ask if the piercing is sitting right in the ear

Why did you ask for advice to then ignore it?

Don't take her to Claire's. She a pharmacist today if could be infected, or a proper piercer or tomorrow a nurse.

Please do not go back to Claire's
