To take a pregnancy test at 10 weeks?

TwinkleInMyEye2020 · 24/10/2019 09:10

Supposedly I’m 10 weeks pregnant. I took several pregnancy tests back around 4-5 weeks which all came up as very clear positives. I still have them all in the bathroom cabinet and I definitely didn’t imagine them.

Yet since then I’ve had no symptoms at all - no sickness, no weight gain, nothing! And there are honestly moments when I doubt it and wonder if there can really be a baby there.

My scan isn’t until 13 weeks. I was thinking about doing another pregnancy test just to reassure myself. I can’t find very much information about doing them at this stage but there is some mention on boards like this of them sometimes not being able to deal with the very high levels of HCG present later on and possibly giving misleading results?

What do you think? Would it be a really stupid idea? Anyone tried it?

Can you pay for an early reassurance scan?
They often have offers on Groupon.

IvinghoeBeacon · 24/10/2019 09:23

This is going to sound facetious but have you had a period? Because if not then not having a period is the biggest symptom that you are pregnant. Tbh the feeling that it’s all in your head is often there even if you do have other early pregnancy symptoms!

Aisforharlot · 24/10/2019 09:34

Yes, take the test. If it’s a strong line likely all is good.
I understand the worry.

TwinkleInMyEye2020 · 24/10/2019 09:37

Thanks. I’d prefer not to have any extra scans if possible.

@IvinghoeBeacon no I haven’t had a period and am normally pretty regular, so you’re right that that’s in my favour. Am glad I’m not the only one ever to feel this doubt!

My DDIL doesn’t get morning sickness, metallic taste in the mouth or any of the other symptoms of early pregnancy. (She is 6 weeks with number 2 atm, but she is definitely pregnant as she had a scan this week, after bleeding)

AmIThough · 24/10/2019 09:41

There's no harm in doing a test. I did regularly in the early days for my own piece of mind.

Imoan123 · 24/10/2019 09:43

When I was pregnant I had no morning sickness, lost my appetite and my boobs didn't get any bigger.

FenellaMaxwell · 24/10/2019 09:45

Why do you prefer not to have scans? Modern ultrasound is completely safe.

Ijumpedtheshark · 24/10/2019 09:47

I didn’t have any pregnancy symptoms other than no period.

MrsWillGardner · 24/10/2019 09:48

At 8-10wks your hcg levels peak then start to depleat so it’s possible that you could get a false negative at the stage you are. But that doesn’t mean you can’t do one. Can you get in for a private scan? Are you happy to wait till 13wks otherwise?

Sparklingbrook · 24/10/2019 09:48

I felt exactly the same. I had no symptoms early on and was convinced at the 12 week scan they would be ‘why are you here?’. This was 20 years ago and he very much exists.Grin

Bexy1393 · 24/10/2019 09:48

I know exactly how you're feeling.. I didn't believe I was pregnant until my first scan just because I didn't feel any different. I now have a 1 year old 😁

CoffeeorBust · 24/10/2019 09:49

Isn't there a point where HCG is so high some tests read as negative? I think 10 weeks might be around the peak..?

A reassurance scan can be quite cheap (£40ish), might be worth it for 3 weeks of peace?

Metalhead · 24/10/2019 09:53

I think this false negative thing due to high hcg is very rare. I’m sure I took a test around 12 weeks just to see what would happen and it was a very dark positive, so I’d say go for it and test!

Trumpleton · 24/10/2019 09:58

I think it's normal to feel this way - I had no symptoms with my first pregnancy and thought like @Sparklingbrook at the scan they would say 'err no nothing here' ...there was, he's now 2.
I didn't want to get an early scan because I thought where will it end?! Could want scans every week for reassurance! But reassurance would be nice if it'll make the next 3 weeks easier for you!

Emmacb82 · 24/10/2019 09:59

I understand where you’re coming from! I’m 9 weeks and don’t feel pregnant at all. I did have a reassurance scan at 8 weeks and all was fine so I know a baby is in there but to be honest it hasn’t reassured me for long as I’m already worrying about the next one. Think you just have to take it one day at a time and enjoy the fact you feel well. You can’t prevent anything from happening so just enjoy it x

Haworthia · 24/10/2019 10:00

I know this gets trotted out as fact but I’m pretty sure it’s bollocks, but even so, it’s usually in relation to late pregnancy.

Since you’re only ten weeks, of course you can still pee on a stick.

mindutopia · 24/10/2019 10:01

There's no reason to. It's possible it could be negative when in fact it's positive (the hook effect), but even if you had had a missed miscarriage, your test would likely still be positive as your body doesn't just stop producing hcg. It is perfectly safe to have scans for medical reasons. If you are concerned that you are not feeling how you expect to feel, that is a medical reason. Otherwise, you just wait until your dating scan.

bobstersmum · 24/10/2019 10:04

I felt like this with my 1st, its normal to feel like this. If your around 10 weeks a test will still show very positive. I was around 9 weeks when I found out I was pregnant with my 3rd, the line was there before I'd even finished weeing!

Areyoufree · 24/10/2019 10:06

I did! I had some spare tests lying about, and just thought I would have a go for funsies. The line appeared pretty much before I had finished peeing on the stick. None of this waiting two minutes malarky.

The worry is awful though - for some reason, with my second pregnancy, I was completely convinced that it wouldn't go full term. Absolutely certain. That gut feeling meant I never allowed myself to believe that he would ever emerge. He did, and is now nearly 6. So, gut feelings can be complete and utter bollocks sometimes!

kmammamalto · 24/10/2019 10:09

I took tests throughout my first trimester, despite being sick as dog. It gave me peace of mind.

MayTheLordOpen · 24/10/2019 10:09

I felt exactly the same with my first. I remember sat waiting for my scan and saying to my DP not to be surprised if there was no baby as I felt EXACTLY the same. Turns out there was a baby...he is now 10 years old!

Bofster37 · 24/10/2019 10:11

Why wouldn't you want an early scan? Seems the ideal way forward...

GrimDamnFanjo · 24/10/2019 10:13

Don't take another test it may cause you more stress! Every pg is different and not everyone is really unwell early on.
I'd either go for a private scan or sit tight until your booking.

Aisforharlot · 24/10/2019 10:14

Pretty sure with a mmc the line would start to fade.
