To take a pregnancy test at 10 weeks?

TwinkleInMyEye2020 · 24/10/2019 09:10

Supposedly I’m 10 weeks pregnant. I took several pregnancy tests back around 4-5 weeks which all came up as very clear positives. I still have them all in the bathroom cabinet and I definitely didn’t imagine them.

Yet since then I’ve had no symptoms at all - no sickness, no weight gain, nothing! And there are honestly moments when I doubt it and wonder if there can really be a baby there.

My scan isn’t until 13 weeks. I was thinking about doing another pregnancy test just to reassure myself. I can’t find very much information about doing them at this stage but there is some mention on boards like this of them sometimes not being able to deal with the very high levels of HCG present later on and possibly giving misleading results?

What do you think? Would it be a really stupid idea? Anyone tried it?

its normal to not feel pregnant at 10 weeks. Not everyone gets morning sickness. A positive home pregnancy test measures for elevated hcg levels which can be elevated even if a pregnancy isn’t progressing, so a false positive is possible if you understand me. A blood test at the doctors would measure the actual amount of hcg and could be used to check if things are progressing as expected.
If I was you I’d chat to your doctor for appropriate management of your concerns/anxiety

It's called the hook effect and is not bollocks, although it is very rare to get a complete negative. The partial hook effect is more common and that will give you a fainter line even though HCG is very high. It's why diluting your urine can give a stronger line when you're a bit further along.

Why would you not just have a scan? I honestly don’t understand why you wouldn’t.
Scans are completely safe, I had several early ones and then scans every 2wks later on due to GD. It was lovely to keep seeing baby and gave me lots of reassurance that everything was ok.

tisonlymeagain · 24/10/2019 10:20

The hook effect is not bollocks, I tested it. I did a pregnancy test at about 8 weeks and while there was a line it was very faint. I diluted it and tested again and it was much much stronger.

The test will only tell you that there is HCG in your system, which there could be if you are or were pregnant. The early pregnancy anxiety is very real, I paid for a reassurance scan for this reason. There is no evidence of harm from scans in pregnancy, and ours was very quick (maybe 10 mins, less than?) but was enough to know I a) was pregnant and b) everything was in the right place and c) growing as expected. I got a good deal on groupon, and would happily spend it again, the reassurance from it was ENORMOUS.

WithTwilightAsMyGuide · 24/10/2019 10:32

I was exactly the same. No symptoms at all, really worried I was going to have the 12 wk scan and there would be no baby. Turns out there were two babies! They’re 7 now Smile
I wouldn’t do another test, it could just cause more worry. Everyone’s different, you don’t often hear about people having no symptoms as it’s not as interesting!

PrimeraVez · 24/10/2019 10:39

I hate to say it, but even if you had a positive test now, it doesn't necessarily mean everything is fine. I was still getting positive tests for a while even after I'd had surgery for a MMC.

That said, it's quite normal to not feel anything!

CaMePlaitPas · 24/10/2019 10:42

From my experience I didn't have any weight gain in my first trimester at all. Further to that, my HG eased up by 10 weeks, although I still didn't feel great and felt very tired until well into my second trimester.

It sounds to me that your body is just getting used to being pregnant, don't HCG levels drop around 10 weeks anyway?

I wouldn't stress, as long as there's no cramps/bleeding I'd take it easy on yourself and wait for the 13 week scan for clarity.

SunshineAngel · 24/10/2019 10:49

Think about the stories where people don't know they're pregnant until they give birth! No symptoms isn't uncommon at that stage - and if you can escape morning sickness that might even be a good thing!

Even if you took a test, it could come up positive in the case of a missed miscarriage due to hormone levels anyway so that wouldn't help your concerns really I don't think.

You've had positive tests, you have your scan soon, and you have no reason to believe that anything is wrong, as no bleeding etc. I'm sure you're fine :).

Jellybeansincognito · 24/10/2019 10:57

Don’t create worry when there’s no need to worry. Just be happy you’re not throwing up 20+ times a day- you still worry then.

Unfortunately the moment we get the positive pregnancy test the worry never stops, even when they’re born- the worries just change.

You learn to push it to one side.

Good luck with your pregnancy!

NearlyGranny · 24/10/2019 11:00

Pregnancy tests are really EARLY pregnancy tests, aren't they? That was the glitch in the plot of Gone Girl iirc!

PixieDustt · 24/10/2019 11:02

Another one who also has no pregnancy symptoms. Try not to worry 😬

Waiting4Sprogo · 24/10/2019 11:03

I was exactly the same as you. I just didn’t feel pregnant so I took a test every week until that scan. If it makes you feel better, do it. You’re not hurting anyone by doing it and you’ll feel better.

Inarightpickleandpreserve · 24/10/2019 11:03

I had exactly this too, it’s impossible not to wonder, have doubts, worries etc.
I’d take an additional test yes.
My ‘doubtful’ pregnancy is in senior school Smile

Amber2019 · 24/10/2019 11:10

I worried I'd go to the scan and I wouldn't be pregnant, I had no symptoms either, I think it's normal to feel what you are feeling.

AuntVictoria · 24/10/2019 11:11

I just wanted to reassure you that I had absolutely no pregnancy symptoms at all. Three friends were pregnant at the same time and were all very sick, and I was so paranoid about it. I was convinced I had had a MMC.

I had a reassurance scan at 10 weeks and DS is now 16 months Smile

Whattodoabout · 24/10/2019 11:11

A test won’t really prove much, only a scan will. I had two missed miscarriages found at the 11 and 12 week scans and still had a positive test for a couple of weeks after the surgery. It takes a while for HCG to disappear even after the ‘products of conception’ have gone. In the case of a MMC, your body is still ‘supporting’ the pregnancy even though it isn’t viable so a test would still be positive even though the embryo has died.

Sorry to sound so negative there, in all likelihood everything is fine. I had zero symptoms at all with my two DD’s and they’re absolutely fine, I only had every symptom going with my DS’s!

Crystal87 · 24/10/2019 11:12

I completely understand this. Some people don't get sickness or any symptoms until the pregnancy is a bit further along. For me, I stopped testing as soon as the test line was darker than the control line, then just waited for my scan. I always thought I'd worry if the line had gone any fainter. I would test though if it's going to reassure you to see those lines x

Beesandcheese · 24/10/2019 11:15

Tests detect a range of hcg, so an upper limit exists! If you need reassurance you could consider a private scan. A test might not reassure

hammeringinmyhead · 24/10/2019 11:21

I didn't really feel pregnant until about 14 weeks when I started to show. No sickness or any other symptoms. In fact I only tested because I ordered eggs for breakfast, then didn't want them. I walked all over Boston at 9 weeks, felt fine!

Wiaa · 24/10/2019 11:22

Hi op I actually didn't take my first test until I was 10 weeks as I had no idea I was pregnant until I couldn't shake off the sicky feeling a few days after a big night out. I got a very clear positive seconds after poas. I had to do another test a week later as the doctors I was at insisted pregnancy had to be confirmed by a particular pharmacy Hmm again this was a very clear positive. Just be prepared that a positive will reassure you a little a negative wont necessarily mean you aren't pregnant

HungryForApples · 24/10/2019 11:22

A lack of morning sickness is associated with having a baby boy Smile

Jellybeansincognito · 24/10/2019 11:25

No, I think not having morning sickness is just associated with not having morning sickness.

Lol

OverthinkingThis · 24/10/2019 11:29

I had no symptoms with DC1 (a boy) and I was really worried leading up to the scan. All was fine tjough. You could do a test op but as pp said it's no guarantee that all is well. It really is either private scan or wait I'm afraid.

northernknickers · 24/10/2019 11:29

What symptoms were you expecting OP? Everyone is different! Not everyone gets sickness, or sore breasts, or feels tired. And you wouldn't be expecting a bump or weight gain at 10 weeks. Just take another test if it will alleviate your worries. No biggie 🤷‍♀️
