AIBU to suggest we spend £900 on a washing machine?

I’m just so fed up with them only lasting a few years. I’m thinking of getting lower end Miele one I saw in a local shop. DH thinks they won’t last any longer. I heard they go on and on. He thinks it’s too much and won’t last as long as two cheap ones. I think it will wash better and last at least twice as long as a cheap one, ours has died after 3 years.. I think we have a family that I’ve never met living in my house too, going by how much washing there is for 3 kids! We can just afford it by doing a lower key Xmas and birthdays this next year. AIBU?

I have Miele machines and they work well with minimal attention. If you can afford it, go for it. You will save money in the long run.

Miele washing machines don't wash clothes any better than other brands do.

It's how you sort the washing and which temperature you use that determines the outcome.

Yabu we are a family of nine, do three loads a day and never spent more than £350 on a machine 10kg. They last approx 8 years.

I have a Miele. It's about 14 years old and still working well. Don't think it washed clothes any better but we've had no problems with it. I think we paid about £550 for it back then. Is £900 really the lower end of the brand's market? Seems high.

You'd be as well to get one with an extended warranty.

I paid £499 for the indesit that has been nothing but a pain in the butt for the last few years. Washes things but still sometimes smells of sweat etc. Want to do shorter eco washes but can’t and they take 2 hours almost with this one and still not that clean. Sports kits go in twice. He does the washing if that makes any difference.

Ours is a cheapy Beko. We've had it about ten years, and when the time comes, we'll get another one.

My tenants seem to go through a washing machine every 2 years. Fuck knows what they’re doing to it

I haven’t looked online yet, but this came up in the local independant shop we walked past today. Probably cheaper online but whether it’s £900 or £750/he is saying it’s too much.
Didn’t get the extended warranty last time as it was almost half again the price of the damn machine.

I’ve had many washing machines from Beko, to Indesit, through Hotpoint to Bosch. All have lasted about 2 years and been a pain. I now have a Miele and there is no looking back. I need a machine that washes and is reliable and it’s the only one that’s fit those basic functions.

The one we saw may not be the lowest end miele they do, it just was the lowest in the shop, others were £1200 +!

We have a Miele. It got to it’s 12th birthday, via 3 kids in washable nappies, and we have it away due to refurbishing the kitchen. We replaced it with another Miele. It is excellent quality, and that is worth paying for. I expect it to last 15 years but I know people in Germany and Switzerland with 20-year old machines.

Reliability is a big factor too. Fed up with weeks of no machine while it’s fixed.

Of course people with Miele machines are going to say they're worth it!

Our £200 beko just gave up after 6 years so I replaced it with the same model updated, think it was £249. If you will have to cut back on xmas etc then you really can't afford the miele imo.

Parsimon was it a higher priced one or the lower end of their range please?

We had a Beko. Super cheap but lasted years. We only got rid of it because we wanted a bigger drum load. We've gone for a Candy now, a couple of months in but seems to be ok.

Unless the washing machine sorted my washing for me, and hung it to dry I would not be spending £900 😂

There’s loads of cheaper good machines, you just need to look for one with settings that suit your needs and don’t overload it.. that’s usually a common error for clothes still smelling or being physically dirty when using quick cycles a lot of machines go from 7kg to as low as 2kgs, less water etc so less rinsing. There needs to be room for stuff to move n check the manual to check the cycles don’t have different weights. Ours is 8 and a beko cheapish one (the quick cycles are pants)

To be honest I want to cut back on Xmas and birthdays anyway but that’s another thread!

We bought the cheapest Miele 12 years ago, it's been used on average 3 times a day and we've had no issues with it ever. It's more than paid for itself.

The cheapest models aren't £900 tho, you can get the one we have for around £600.

Do you put a limescale tablet in every single load?

Limescale is the nemesis of washing machines.

Meile are a good machine. They do go on and on.

However. If it does need repairing at some point. It can be expensive if out of the warranty. Parts aren’t cheap for it either

The Miele will almost certainly be cheaper online. Take a note of its features and see if there are any comparable models going any cheaper than the first one you've noticed. Shop around as you may well be able to get something at around the £4-500 mark.

However, it doesn't matter if you have the most efficient, most expensive model in the land, if you are overloading, using too much/too little detergent, not pre-washing or spot treating when needed, you'll never get a good result. Perhaps it's time to take a look at how DH actually does the laundry?

Get yourself a Which? membership and have a look at their reviews - you don’t always get what you pay for, and there is good value to be found amongst the cheaper brand.

I've got a Miele, it's about 6 years old now, previously a Bosch and an Indesit lasted about 2 years each.
It takes a bigger load and is quieter than the others.

Not sure if it's better value really, but I prefer it.
