AIBU to suggest we spend £900 on a washing machine?

I’m just so fed up with them only lasting a few years. I’m thinking of getting lower end Miele one I saw in a local shop. DH thinks they won’t last any longer. I heard they go on and on. He thinks it’s too much and won’t last as long as two cheap ones. I think it will wash better and last at least twice as long as a cheap one, ours has died after 3 years.. I think we have a family that I’ve never met living in my house too, going by how much washing there is for 3 kids! We can just afford it by doing a lower key Xmas and birthdays this next year. AIBU?

I had this problem too - machines broke every couple of years until I got a Miele. We've had it for 9 years now, I love it. We're a family of five too.

I just couldn't cope with not having a machine for a week or so every time the old one broke.

Glad you found a resolution, OP

Our Miele washer dryer was not reliable at all. We had to ditch it after only 2 years. Really disappointed as my mum's Miele things lasted years!

GodolphianArabian · 20/10/2019 16:10

But if you spend loads you have to get it repaired when it breaks. Instead we buy cheap maybe £200ish. Then if it lasts great, if it breaks I buy another on click and collect. So I don't have to manage without a machine ever, don't wait for repair man or parts etc. Even the cheapest machine should last a couple of years.

PhonicTheHedgehog · 20/10/2019 16:11

If you buy a Miele you get a free yearly check. At my washers last one the lovely repair guy told me not to worry about overfilling it. He said it’s better than having it underfilled.

Mine is a Classic.

Dowser · 20/10/2019 16:21

Think mine is Beke
( I’m not at home)
Love it
£200 and does a great job
Dead simple to operate we wash on the 28 minute programme

whatthedickens5 · 20/10/2019 16:21

We have a 14 year old Miele. Has never broken and not given us a single problem. Family of five and all the kids were in cloth nappies. Worth ever penny.

Cillmantain · 20/10/2019 16:37

I have a Miele for 20 years.
Still going strong.
Had the belt replaced..my husband had been over loading it.
Also powder gives better results than tablets

SunshineCake · 20/10/2019 16:41

We must be on machine about five or six. People are stupid if they think they all last for decades. Having said that I wouldn't spend £900 on one unless I was certain it would last a good 15 years. Lots depends on usage of course.

SunshineCake · 20/10/2019 16:43

OP, add Dettol laundry cleanser in the wash load when doing sports kit. Solved the sweat smell problems which happened on ironing.

Mummyme1987 · 20/10/2019 16:44

We have agreed on one and just sorting finance now. Glad to hear how long Miele have lasted. DH is now as excited as I am for it! Anything to spend less time doing laundry is a winner in his books. Having to wash twice is such a waste of time.

I got a Siemens with full parts and service warranty for 5 years. It's been great, they've been out once and the machine is fab. Lots of companies do free extended warranty deals, it's worth checking out.

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 20/10/2019 16:45

My Meile is 18.5 years old and has never needed servicing or mending.

It's amazing.

Just get the most basic one and it will still be better than anything else ime.

Drabarni · 20/10/2019 16:46

if you have the money to waste, they don't last any longer than cheap ones. They are made to last a few years, if you get more then you're lucky. Gone are the days when they were built to last.

WellTidy · 20/10/2019 16:48

Love my Miele. It is 9+ years old and never had any problems with it. We do at least one wash a day, usually two, and live in a very hard water area.

Miele engineer told me to only use powder for whites and only liquid for darks and colours.

chemicalelephant · 20/10/2019 16:49

Instead we buy cheap maybe £200ish. Then if it lasts great, if it breaks I buy another on click and collect.

And this attitude is why the planet is fucked.

ActualHornist · 20/10/2019 16:49

I think you need to sort out the smelly clothing before buying a new machine. Try detol laundry for sweaty smells, also bio powder and a hotter wash.

I can’t help but feel you’re throwing money at a problem that could be solved with different detergent and more patience.

MangoSalsa · 20/10/2019 16:49

Miele is worth it. We got their cheapest freezer 5 years ago. It’s been brilliant. On the basis of that we’ve just bought their cheapest washer dryer.

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 20/10/2019 16:50

Lots depends on usage of course

At least 1-3 loads a day often more over 18.5 years.

My Meile drier lasted 15 years too and my dishwasher was third hand and we worked out it must've been 25 ish years old.

2 Meile vacuums- one is 15 years and working as well as the day it was bought and the other is 12 ish years old iirc.

Fridge and freezer 12 years old and still going strong.

Love Meile.

FaFoutis · 20/10/2019 16:53

My Miele has lasted about 20 years so far with no problems. It is used a couple of times a day and I rarely use anything other than the quick wash setting. It's well worth the money.

Igmum · 20/10/2019 16:59

Well done OP! Miele here too, 20 years old and still going strong (hope I haven't jinxed it now 😬). You'll love it!

RedSheep73 · 20/10/2019 17:04

Yanbu, we decided to stump up for a Miele and it's fantastic, no trouble at all. I forget how long we've had it, between 5 and 10 years I think but it's never gone wrong. My 2yo Hotpoint dishwasher on the other hand is a piece of shit and I'm waiting for the engineer to fix it yet again.

LuaDipa · 20/10/2019 17:09

My dh and I had this debate. I do all of the washing so I ordered the Miele anyway. 11 years later, it’s still going strong. He now admits I was right.

I have always followed the recommendations by the engineer who installed it not to use too much detergent, to run it on a hot wash once a month empty with no powder/liquid to flush it through and to use both the Miele brand cleaner and limescale remover once every couple of months.

Would never have anything else now and when my drier dies, I will replace that with a Miele too.

GinisLife · 20/10/2019 17:10

My Miele managed 20 years. I bought another one 2 years ago after going through 2 s/h machines that did me a couple of years

Fatted · 20/10/2019 17:12

If you've tried different machines and they're all knackered after two years, I'd be having a look at how you're doing your washing. If your clothes are smelly, have you cleaned the machine regularly? Used different temperatures and detergents?

I've had two washing machines in the past 15 years. Both Beko. Cost £300 max. I've had no complaints. The newer one did have a problem with the drum, but was repaired quickly and easily as was still under warranty at the time. I'm only getting a new one now because I need a washer dryer now.

EmeraldShamrock · 20/10/2019 17:13

Meile like most washing machine are not like they use to be.
If I was going for an expensive one I'd choose samsung they've an excellent warranty package.
