So they have a 3 step rule against racism but didn’t manage to get past the 1st step despite persistent racist chants in the second half.

I cannot believe that dehumanising non-whites is still a thing today.

AIBU that there needs to be a much tougher stance against racism?

I’ve never heard of the 2 fingers thing and I’m British / Aussie with a grandad from Bermuda.

I will go off and read.

Fifa need to grow a pair of bollocks. Nope, never gonna happen. Utterly useless.

They will not do anything unless they are hurt financially, and the way to achieve that hurt is for poc to boycott on an international level. No amount of shallow virtue signalling measures will achieve anything. It's not like it's a new problem.

Some of the other measures will also just result in a backlash of blame to the black players. What happened is disgusting. But despite strong rhetoric it's clear it's pretty much acceptable and we can expect to see it again.

UEFA should deduct points and in repeat cases suspend countries from tournaments.

The FA, clubs and government should deny hospitality and not accept it either.

I was listening to Vanessa Feltz on BBC London today. She had on 2 Bulgarian sports journalists at different points. One said it was a shame but only 2-3 people were responsible for the racism even though VF said that the pictorial evidence said otherwise. The other also minimised it and said the Bulgarian coach could not hear it and it was just a few of the crowds. Their reactions were not reassuring in the least.

A Bulgarian living here for the last few years said that the behaviour was prevalent in Bulgaria - they took against anybody with a different skin colour or religion.

They also had several black callers who were either working in Eastern Europe or on holiday, where they had experienced bad racism. Some said they were fully supportive of leaving Europe because they felt hated by a lot of the countries in the EU.

VF then shockingly mentioned a holiday she had been on in Croatia with her partner who is of Nigerian origin. She said they were in the pool in the hotel where they were staying out, swimming. They were asked to get out of the pool. She said they complied but they were bewildered why they had been asked to leave. She sought out the assistant manager who said that people did not like to see black/white couples there, people find it upsetting and that's why they were asked to leave. The manager just sort of shrugged it off and said that was just the way it was there.

I am not a football fan, my DH had it on last night. I watched those sinister idiots in the black hoodies with mounting alarm. You hear reports that the far right is rising in huge numbers across Europe and never really took it in until last night. It's chilling, the sheer brazenness of it, standing there making nazi salutes. The people around them sat completely expressionless. The Nazis in Germany were a relatively small group but everybody sat back and let them wreak their catastrophic havoc. This needs stamping out fast.

Ive seen quite a bit on twitter today about James McLean and the abuse he gets from his own teams fans-unfortunately abuse towards footballers due to race/religion etc is not just abroad. Whilst the England game has brought it to light I Think we also need to look closer to home.

There might still be some problems in Britain when it comes to race but it’s a hell of a lot better than most places

This thread was about a football match. Players in Britain are still regularly being racially abused at games and it's rarely taken seriously. Millwall were fined 10k for racist chants earlier this year, while Huddersfield were fined 50k for their shirt sponsor joke with paddy power. If we're going to sit here demanding other countries face tough sanctions then we really need to get our own house in order and not just dismiss it with 'ach it's better than it was' rubbish.

Whether or not Bulgaria has wider racism issues in it's society is not really fifa/uefa's problem and I'm not sure there's anything they could really even if they did want too.

@Buccanarab

If you’d quoted my full post, rather than just the 2nd half of it, it would make sense, in the context of football.
