Sausage roll in packed lunch?

just2comment · 08/10/2019 20:05

School lunch box police are out in force! Yesterday I received a generic email about "healthy foods" for packed lunches"

No bread in the house and really can't be bothered to drive to local Tesco. Is a sausage roll (Tesco one) OK for packed lunch?

A boiled egg, carrot sticks and grapes , stick of cheddar and 2 crackers included too.

My dd takes a sausage roll or a scotch pie for lunch sometimes

dementedpixie · 08/10/2019 20:09

Probably wont need the crackers or cheese if she has the sausage roll

Fedup123456 · 08/10/2019 20:09

Sounds fine to me.

Xmasbaby11 · 08/10/2019 20:10

Sounds fine with the rest of the lunch.

PickAChew · 08/10/2019 20:10

DS2 takes a sandwich, cake (fruit muffin or banana bread type of cake - it's the only fruit I can get into him) and sausage roll (or pork pie) every day. He's made it to year 9 on that pattern, so far.

Sounds flippin lovely Grin

Tiredmum100 · 08/10/2019 20:12

I do the same, run out of bread, give a sausage roll. It's not every week but I think once in a while is fine!

Chickychoccyegg · 08/10/2019 20:15

my dd(13) regularly takes a sausage roll, crisps and bar of chocolate (i do sneak in some fruit and veg but half the time the healthy stuff comes home again)

Sausage roll, diced potatoes with peas/beans is on the school menu once in the rolling 3 weeks at my boys primary school.

Shouldn't be a problem!

HavelockVetinari · 08/10/2019 20:21

It's too much saturated fat for a regular thing (crackers, pastry, processed meat) but it'll be fine as a one-off unless your child's school is particularly harsh.

Shessobrave · 08/10/2019 20:22

No I wouldn't personally. It might be a well known picnic item that has traditionally been eaten for lunch etc etc. However it is loaded with grease! Have you ever microwaved a sausage roll? Try it..... See how much grease comes out and you'll be horrified. Thick greasy fat that turns solid & white when it cools.

As you've no bread, perhaps boil some pasta, let and add chopped cucumber & sweetcorn then mix with a small amount of creme fraichè or a teaspoon of mayo. No, I certainly wouldn't be going to this trouble every night. However as it's a one off - why not?

Shessobrave · 08/10/2019 20:23

That was meant to say let it cool before adding the cucumber 🤦🏼‍♀️

JaneyJimplin · 08/10/2019 20:24

I think that's fine. Mine have cooked school lunches, but I'll often do a sausage roll for lunch on weekends as my eldest wont eat bread.

Crawley65 · 08/10/2019 20:24

I’d worry about it getting too warm so I’d put an ice pack in with it.

dementedpixie · 08/10/2019 20:24

I dont get hundreds of grease when microwaving a sausage roll. Maybe you're buying crap ones

dementedpixie · 08/10/2019 20:25

But sausage rolls dont need to be in the fridge. They are not all in the fridge at the supermarket

NightOwl27 · 08/10/2019 20:26

Just leave the bread out and add another boiled egg? Low carb is the healthiest diet anyway

Shessobrave · 08/10/2019 20:27

@dementedpixie I don't buy crap like sausage rolls. They're well known for being loaded with fat (and eyeballs 🤢). If you keep microwaving it beyond the point at which you'd normally take it out, you end up with a pool of mostly fat and not much else!

just2comment · 08/10/2019 20:38

Thanks all, I've no pasta in either Blush it's definitely a one off so the sausage roll (fat and all) has gone in Grin

Personally I'd prefer a Cornish pasty but a sausage roll is also nice 👍 Grin

SerenDippitty · 08/10/2019 20:43

Far too fatty. Not just the meat, the pastry is loaded with fat too.

JasonPollack · 08/10/2019 20:45

Low carb is not a healthy diet for a growing person! It is an effective weight loss diet for a reason. JFC this site sometimes.

TarrantsTinyToe · 08/10/2019 20:48

It's a sausage roll folks ... not crack! Some people feed them to their children 😱😱

Millions of people must eat them otherwise they wouldn't be so popular!

dementedpixie · 08/10/2019 20:50

We have some in the fridge right now. Dd may have them in her lunch tomorrow Shock

JennyBlueWren · 08/10/2019 20:51

School lunch today was sausage roll. Very popular! Not sure how it meets the regulations -maybe they hide veggies in it?
