Sausage roll in packed lunch?

just2comment · 08/10/2019 20:05

School lunch box police are out in force! Yesterday I received a generic email about "healthy foods" for packed lunches"

No bread in the house and really can't be bothered to drive to local Tesco. Is a sausage roll (Tesco one) OK for packed lunch?

A boiled egg, carrot sticks and grapes , stick of cheddar and 2 crackers included too.

Sausage roll in packed lunch?

Mmm.. Love a microwaved sausage roll dipped in ketchup. I’m too busy shoving the greasy pastry in my mouth to tell you if it dries like lard, sorry 😊

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 08/10/2019 22:39

School have vegetarian sausage roll on their menu . Apparently its gross

I've sent mini sausage rolls in packed lunches before

ASandwichNamedKevin · 08/10/2019 22:41

I'm just shocked at all these people eating cold sausage rolls! 😲😲

BlueEyedBengal · 08/10/2019 22:50

Talking about the lunch box police my kids school have banned muller rice they come back untouched because they have been taken off them then return uneaten but fruit corners are allowed so why? Aren't they advertised by the British athletes.

dementedpixie · 08/10/2019 22:50

Did they say why they are banned?

BlueEyedBengal · 08/10/2019 22:54

I can't get a straight answer as only difference is rice isn't rice the base of the healthiest diets in the world? Tempted to phone muller to inform them.

LaurieMarlow · 08/10/2019 22:57

Well Muller Rice are full of sugar, but then so are most commercial yoghurts, which are usually allowed.

It’s far from an exact science.

Scotch pies are mutton pies. I love them. Will be in Scotland in a few weeks. Must make sure I have one.

Marriedwithchildren5 · 08/10/2019 22:59

Is a scotch pie a pork pie?

I gave dd and ds a sausage roll when I ran out of bread. I added a cucumber, tomato and cheese salad. I remember feeling super proud at my creativity.

daffydowndilys · 08/10/2019 22:59

I can't get over someone saying that they don't keep sausage rolls in the fridge!!! 😱😱😱

Yes when they have been freshly cooked they sell them warm, but once cold they must be put in the fridge. It's meat!!

dementedpixie · 08/10/2019 23:01

They can be kept at ambient temperature for a few hours. Have you not seen them on display in your local supermarket near the deli counter and not in a fridge?

daffydowndilys · 08/10/2019 23:04

Yes, but that's freshly cooked. Once cooked they need to be refrigerated

rosesmammy · 08/10/2019 23:05

@Trebla good for you, your holiness, but that doesn’t help op right now does it?

dementedpixie · 08/10/2019 23:07

I'm not talking about hot ones. I'm talking about cooked ones that have cooled, on display, usually in a paper bag, not in a fridge. They can be on display for a day

darkcloudsandrainstorms · 08/10/2019 23:09

I would not want one. Examine what goes in them and how they are made. I cannot even recall the last time I even had a sausage roll.

We make our own sandwich and with carrot, celery onion and radish bits. Then an apple and maybe a banana.

Dieu · 08/10/2019 23:10

I'm the very last mother to lecture about healthy eating - in fact, that would be laughable in my case - but honestly, oatcakes are a lifesaver. Or maybe it's because I'm Scottish?! Grin
I always keep a packet in the cupboard, in case I run out of bread, and they're great for packed lunches. Daughter has them plain, with butter, with chocolate spread, cheese or jam.

Lillyhatesjaz · 08/10/2019 23:11

Genuine lunch for a 4 year old at nursery. 1 mars bar, 2 creme eggs, 1 packet of salt and vinegar crisps, 1packet of pom bears, a large punnet of strawberries. Pretty much anything else looks good in comparison.

morrisseysquif · 08/10/2019 23:12

Once in a while is fine. Anything in moderation is fine.

A scotch pie is a bit like a pork pie but made with mutton.

user1481840227 · 08/10/2019 23:12

Not a big deal every now and again at all. I mean an awful lot of kids are heading off to school every day eating a big bowl of sugary cereal.

Some kids might get a ham sandwich every day with the worst quality ham, and they're eating it every single day for years. Sausage rolls might not be good for you, but i'd rather give one to my child occasionally than giving them processed meat every single school day.

morrisseysquif · 08/10/2019 23:15

I don't get the packed lunch police when the kids have fish fingers, beans and chips and sponge and custard for pudding.

I'm just jealous.

TheGirlWhoLived · 08/10/2019 23:16

In my mind I waft around making dc healthy, homemade, plastic-free lunches- as I imagine Trebla lives (do you have a kaftan?)

In reality I’m a little more.... laissez-faire on the healthy, homemade front. I sometimes decant from a big packet of popcorn into Tupperware though

Rachelover60 · 08/10/2019 23:16

Sounds great. I haven't had a sausage roll for years and fancy one now.

TheGirlWhoLived · 08/10/2019 23:18

But op, on a serious note- I would butter four crackers and stick them together butter-side-in. Pop some cheese and grapes in and dc can have a Cheeseboard for lunch!

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 08/10/2019 23:19

Oh I blooming well love a good sausage roll 😍 I'll eat one cold but prefer hot with chips & mushy peas.

Anyhow Yes op put the sausage roll in the lunch box...
