Sausage roll in packed lunch?

just2comment · 08/10/2019 20:05

School lunch box police are out in force! Yesterday I received a generic email about "healthy foods" for packed lunches"

No bread in the house and really can't be bothered to drive to local Tesco. Is a sausage roll (Tesco one) OK for packed lunch?

A boiled egg, carrot sticks and grapes , stick of cheddar and 2 crackers included too.

As a teacher I'd ban hard boiled eggs. They smell gross. PLEASE not in my school. A sausage roll from time to time? Fair enough.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 08/10/2019 23:21

I’ve got Linda McCartney veg sausage rolls in the freezer which the DC sometimes take.
Obviously I stick a large sign on the that they are virtuous sausage rolls and definitely not Greggs. Wink

chuckeeee · 08/10/2019 23:27

Yuk soggy yoghurt pizza Confused

Op, it's a sausage roll. I've never met a kid that doesn't eat them. It's fine

HoppingPavlova · 08/10/2019 23:31

Off topic but always amazed at the quantity of food people state when talking about lunch boxes. Mine went right through school with a piece of fruit for recess and a vegemite sandwich (lightly spread on good quality low GI bread) for lunch. None ever hungry or wanted more. Had a canteen lunch roughly once every 2 months when bread unexpected low.

Venger · 08/10/2019 23:33

Genuine lunch for a 4 year old at nursery. 1 mars bar, 2 creme eggs, 1 packet of salt and vinegar crisps, 1packet of pom bears, a large punnet of strawberries. Pretty much anything else looks good in comparison.

I'm surprised they ate it all and weren't sick!

DS has food aversions. Every day he has either Nutella or peanut butter spread very thinly on a single slice of crustless bread folded over to make a sandwich, 3 mini cocktail sausages, an apple, and some ready salted crisps. No variations are tolerated except for a couple of weeks ago when, unknown to me and fuck knows why, he dumped the lot out into the kitchen bin and took a whole green pepper instead. I got a "what the hell is your kid doing...?" phone call from the school office and had to pay for a school lunch which he didn't eat.

All the convenience and none of the guilt - vegan sausage rolls from Aldi! I haven't eaten meat for year, but my husband and kids assure me that they are almost indistinguishable from your bog-standard meaty sausage roll although the pastry is nice and flaky rather than the claggy stuff you normally get on a regular one. My hard-to-please son loves them and they have made packed lunches and picnics a lot easier!

IHaveBrilloHair · 08/10/2019 23:39

Oooh, sausage roll, chips and beans, one of my favourite dinners which I am so having tomorrow.

Not considering the environmental impact because "life is too busy" is just not OK.

Ps
The pizza is fine and surprisingly yogurt (homemade using locally sourced raw milk) and SR flour bought in bulk makes a good dough that freezes perfectly well
No I don't have a kaftan
I'm more than happy to be the laughing stock of this thread to make a point

TryingAndFailing39 · 09/10/2019 06:03

My teenagers have a sausage roll (or 2!) most days as a snack at school as well as their school dinner!
Only on MN could there be sausage roll controversy 😂

A sausage roll is absolutely fine. Better than bread every day

BlueWonder · 09/10/2019 06:17

What you listed seems enough protein-wise without the sausage roll. I would have left that out but added a more filling pudding thing. Days when you don't have the right stuff in are tricky though. I try and keep an unopened malt loaf at the back of the cupboard for emergencies or knock up flapjack or banana or apple or raspberry muffins etc at 6am Smile. Not smug, just disorganised, but normally have flour, eggs, oil and sugar in....use whatever ancient apples or bananas I have hanging around or frozen berries from freezer.. Takes about 10 mins to mix up and oven does the rest while I run around ironing shirts and de-crumpling PE kit. Makes me feel better to shove home made junk food in than shop bought junk - don"t know why!

Clutterbugsmum · 09/10/2019 06:19

And don’t post about food on here again, it brings out the nut jobs.

So fucking true.

It's a sausage roll not poison.

Marriedwithchildren5 · 09/10/2019 06:30

@trebla I'd just back away from this one. No one has an issue with doing their bit or saying they dont have time. Tbf the op didn't drive to the shop and has utilised food she already has. Sometimes look for the positive.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 09/10/2019 06:31

yogurt (homemade using locally sourced raw milk)
Of course it is @Trebla. We could have guessed you made your own yoghurt from raw milk but thanks fo confirming.

OP I wouldn't worry so much about the school lunch box police. The MN ones on the other hand.....

Flightsoffancy · 09/10/2019 06:56

@Trebla That pizza recipe is genius, I've just looked it up! Thanks!

Hederex · 09/10/2019 07:07

You've asked in the wrong place here OP. Grin MN IS the lunchbox police.
I think the occasional sausage roll is fine.

Minioooons · 09/10/2019 07:11

It sounds fine. And the rest of the items sounds like it balances out.

just2comment · 09/10/2019 07:19

@Dieu oatcakes!!!cheese ones are great, they are going on shopping list.
Her school does not allow jam, peanut butter (allergies) and I'd be shot if I sent Nutella in!

Dd has vetoed boiled egg as she said classmates call her smelly 🤣

@BlueEyedBengal, rice is now considered to be the worst type of carbs, because it gives the biggest insulin resistance spike. It could be that.

"School have vegetarian sausage roll on their menu . Apparently its gross"
The Pound Bakery's Vegetarian sausage rolls are fab.

Love a microwaved sausage roll dipped in ketchup. "" mine was mayo or brown sauce.

But not anymore because I've given up processed carbs.

I was brought up on sausage rolls, Iceland's (newly opened in the 70's) cheese and onion pasties and on special occasions, Vol-au-vents. We survived.

@Trebla what happens to the babies whose milk you are stealing? It doesn't matter about 'locally sourced' you're still contributing to the biggest planet killer, the dairy trade.

There's really interesting discussions around if Vegans can keep their own chickens etc on Vegetarian and vegan forums, which explains it well.

There's nothing wrong with a sausage roll. Yanbu.

Venger · 09/10/2019 07:24

Oh my god, OP! GRAPES! Don't you know they're basically just little sugar bombs...?

Looks lush.

Oysterbabe · 09/10/2019 07:24

Looks good to me!
People are nuts about food on here.

Waitingforadulthood · 09/10/2019 07:32

I envy your uncut grapes. Lunchbox police here make you halve them- for teens ffs.
