To wonder what happened to Emos?

Is anyone else young/old enough to have gone through an ‘emo’ phase in the 2002-2007 period? You know, the heavy eyeliner, boys with side fringes, black skinny jeans, studded belts, cool ‘band’ T-shirts and the angsty music that usually talked about broken hearts and self harm?! It was such a huge thing at my secondary school!

You just don’t see teenagers like that anymore! It wasn’t just a few quirky people, whenever I speak to friends of a similar age we all seem to have gone through a similar phase.

Clearly the UK/the world moved on from it but it’s just like that sub-culture has totally disappeared! I realise this is probably how people feel about the 80s etc and the various subcultures! Do they not exist anymore or have I just grown up? Grin

My emo grandaughter is now in her twenties and about to become a mom like all fashion phases kids grow up and become normal human beings again, i was a skinhead at the beggining of the 1970s would look a bit daft now at 63 in stayprest and a ben sherman shirt lol

changedname3243 · 29/09/2019 18:28

I was a wannabe emo (couldn’t afford the fashion!!) ...

Hellogoodbye, You Me at Six, Taking Back Sunday, Paramore, MCR, Fallout Boy .. I still have a wee paramore session when I feel fed up .

‘She’s got a body like an hourglass it’s ticking like a clock ...’

And those wee pictures of the sad little blob things on bebo ..

It was a huge thing when I was 16 or 17 so 2005/2007 ish .. Everyone wore converse, wrote ‘rawr’ on everything , XD , neon on black , long fringes that you couldn’t see past ... thick black liner ...

nancy75 · 29/09/2019 18:29

They still exist, I had 7 of them in my house last Saturday ( the girl version rather than the boy version) it was a house full of black eyeliner, dms, checked shirts & teenage angst Grin

Vipersnest88 · 29/09/2019 18:30

@changedname Oh gosh ‘rawr’!!! I had forgotten about that! And those bands you mentioned too - I literally haven’t heard any of those anywhere apart from fall out boy in probably 10 years?!

nancy75 · 29/09/2019 18:30

Although I think they call themselves something different & the bands have probably changed

Vipersnest88 · 29/09/2019 18:30

@nancy75 haha that is interesting to know!!!

Prefer Screamo, still listen to it, still wear too much eyeliner...

ClashCityRocker · 29/09/2019 18:33

There don't seem to be the goths or metalheads nowadays....

I was skate-punk, so overlapping early emo. The world's baggiest jeans and longest key-chain in the world hanging down to my ankles, and a band hoody.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 29/09/2019 18:34

The MySpace poses...

I was a very half hearted emo for a bit. To much effort.

There used to be a huge groups of them when we used to go to the Centre mk around the tree in the new build. Just all looked the same though. Not sure when it became less of a thing

OkayGo · 29/09/2019 18:35

Haha hello! Emo/Grunger here. Unfortunately now I am a mum, and a bit fat, and not very cool anymore. I do still have very long hair (which I no longer dye) and I love a good bunch of bracelets on my wrists (anyone remember shag bands?) and I still listen to my old music on my amazon echo haha. I still wear ripped skinny jeans and T-shirt’s. Not so much eyeliner now though !
I am nearly 31 though so I’d look like a right knob if I still dressed the way I did. I know someone who does and he’s 40 and it’s pretty tragic.
I do look out for the odd grunger in the crowds of young people I pass but it looks like they do something else now.

Pinkbonbon · 29/09/2019 18:36

I actually miss it a little. Most of my pals were emo in college 2006-8. I could never be get the look right so I left it too them, but they accepted me anyways xD

I still love the music though. Feel my tastes are somewhat stuck in that era.

Just been watching gossip girl and there's a lass called jenny in it who is proper emo the first two seasons. Making me nostalgic, the clothes are so fun.

Vipersnest88 · 29/09/2019 18:37

@LetsGoFlyAKiteee there were huge groups of emos in a certain part of the city where I lived (including myself) and I thought it was the coolest thing ever! Now you just wouldn’t see that at all!

OkayGo · 29/09/2019 18:38

I did google ‘chains for jeans’ the other day to see if I could still get away with one 😁

Vipersnest88 · 29/09/2019 18:38

@OkayGo glad to hear it hasn’t totally gone Smile

CatsOnCatnip · 29/09/2019 18:38

Still have the piercings and a stretch. Still listen to those bands every now and then (still know all the wordsBlush) still almost exclusively wear black skinny jeans and vans/converse/DMs... my hair isn’t a mullet anymore though. And it’s no longer blue/black thank GOD.

JessesGirl · 29/09/2019 18:38

I was an emo kid. Still wear mostly black now and I will never give up my Converse! We were so scene we used to wear different coloured Converse, one red and one pink for example Hmm I think my mum still has remnants of bright pink hair dye ingrained into her bathroom tiles Blush

PawPawNoodle · 29/09/2019 18:39

I was a weird emo/goth/metalhead hybrid that spent all weekend out in Camden underage drinking (mid-2000s no one cared much!) on the lock.

I had to become a grown up, get a professional job and pay taxes, dont have enough time to hate the world and spend 2 hours on my make up sadly! I do still listen to most of the music though.

Vipersnest88 · 29/09/2019 18:39

@Pinkbonbon Makes me so nostalgic if I hear anything I used to listen to back then - takes me right back to those days!!

OP posts:
CatsOnCatnip · 29/09/2019 18:39

I still see the occasional kid who looks like a this generations emo/scenester. They haven’t changed much.

7Worfs · 29/09/2019 18:39

I was too old to be emo, I was a grunge kid - Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden

Vipersnest88 · 29/09/2019 18:40

@PolPotNoodle Ha so true - I probably would have found you incredibly cool!!

OP posts:
TheBlueMeaniesAreComing · 29/09/2019 18:40

I think the fact that most of that generation are hitting 30 soon means we can’t get away with walking about in nightmare before Xmas attire and those fringes are just such hard work 🤣
Mainstream fashion has made blending in easier too. The alternative subculture of skate shoes, skinny jeans and angsty T-shirt’s is more mainstream now too 🤣
I think it’s also comparable to grunge of the 90s, New Romantics of the 80s etc once your not a teen anymore you have to grow up and the next generation adapt to what works for them

7Worfs · 29/09/2019 18:40

Meant to say - there aren’t as many subcultures these days and it’s sad.

CatsOnCatnip · 29/09/2019 18:42

Would still 100% attend an emo club night 😂

Vipersnest88 · 29/09/2019 18:42

@TheBlueMeaniesAreComing nightmare before Christmas comment cracked me up - so true Grin
