To wonder what happened to Emos?

Is anyone else young/old enough to have gone through an ‘emo’ phase in the 2002-2007 period? You know, the heavy eyeliner, boys with side fringes, black skinny jeans, studded belts, cool ‘band’ T-shirts and the angsty music that usually talked about broken hearts and self harm?! It was such a huge thing at my secondary school!

You just don’t see teenagers like that anymore! It wasn’t just a few quirky people, whenever I speak to friends of a similar age we all seem to have gone through a similar phase.

Clearly the UK/the world moved on from it but it’s just like that sub-culture has totally disappeared! I realise this is probably how people feel about the 80s etc and the various subcultures! Do they not exist anymore or have I just grown up? Grin

We grew up. For me I just wanted to somewhere to belong.

(I don't think emo sucks by the way. Just loved that video)

Bunnyhop1502 · 30/09/2019 18:40

@KnobOfStork did you hear he’s gone back to the band? Skrillex is overrrr Grin

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 30/09/2019 21:21

I found this band - Cancel Tomorrow - they are a little bit emo, a little bit mosher, a little bit metal. I really like them, went to see them live a few weeks ago. The bass player is excellent.

Ahhh omg my hair. I washed, blow dried, backcombed and sprayed my hair every. Single. Morning.
It was MASSIVE. It took me two hours! And then the pink and black hair-dye from the "goth shop" every couple of weeks. Paired that with the thickest whitest foundation I could find and eyeliner (which somehow took me 5 minutes)

Parents and friends parents taking it in turns to drive us around the country to see different bands.
No standing until your over 16! My parents rules.

I remember after the 2nd time of seeing All American Rejects we met them after and Tyson Ritter invited us to.hang out with them upstairs but my friend was like "we can't, we have our GCSES next week and we must get back, It's a few hours drive and we can't miss our revision session!"

I was gutted haha

I must say hands down that My Chemical Romance were the best band I saw Live.i would be so excited if they just did one last tour.

shearwater · 02/10/2019 02:45

Meant to say - there aren’t as many subcultures these days and it’s sad

I don't think it's sad. Even as a teenager, I found it weird that certain people wanted to express their "individuality" by dressing the same as everyone else in that subgroup. If people don't want to be so obviously pigeon-holed by their appearance then I think this is a positive thing.

cannotmakemymindup · 02/10/2019 03:26

Just Yes!!! Between this and the Star Trek thread totally found my people. Less emo more skater with the super massive jeans and a chain. All the leather bracelets, sweatbands from bands. I still embrace my goth/skater side with some gigs love when I get an opportunity to wear my almost black purple lipstick and do dramatic eyes. Ooh and I was once in Kerrang with bullet for my valentine. Anybody remember Elliot Minor?

Also grown up, married, kid sensible. But still got all my cds, trying to digitise for USB for my car so I can enjoy long journeys of reminiscing. And found in a lot more colours then black now. Did still get married in a black dress mind. (So outing)

Toadsrevisited · 02/10/2019 03:54

Me too! Now I am a thirty something teacher wearing boden to hide tattoos. Used to love Thrice, At the drive in, my chemical romance. Anyone else like AFI? They are easily the best band I've seen live.

HennyPennyHorror · 02/10/2019 04:01

Aren't they called Eboys now? Or Egirls?

MeggyMeg · 02/10/2019 04:12

I can confirm emos are alive and well. I have a 14 year old girl version who can be found wearing black ripped jeans,DM boots, band hoodies and a mopey face.

MeggyMeg · 02/10/2019 04:12

Oh yes, she calls herself an egirl

Pip231018 · 02/10/2019 04:57

I am still 100% emo, I go to emo club nights now every other month and sing my little heart out. The are people who look about 12 and then people who are my age. Loads of the bands are still around, if you go to festivals like Download or Slamdunk then I always feel like I'm amongst my kin. We have screamo Sundays in our house and my go to Spotify playlist is all emo - obvs MCR will always be my #1. I even have the action figures in my loft - complete with guns and coffins. I only ever wear black, my hair is not a giant black cloud anymore and I still wear winged eyeliner, I no longer have 13 piercings or stretched ears, but we all grow up at some point. X
