To wonder what happened to Emos?

Is anyone else young/old enough to have gone through an ‘emo’ phase in the 2002-2007 period? You know, the heavy eyeliner, boys with side fringes, black skinny jeans, studded belts, cool ‘band’ T-shirts and the angsty music that usually talked about broken hearts and self harm?! It was such a huge thing at my secondary school!

You just don’t see teenagers like that anymore! It wasn’t just a few quirky people, whenever I speak to friends of a similar age we all seem to have gone through a similar phase.

Clearly the UK/the world moved on from it but it’s just like that sub-culture has totally disappeared! I realise this is probably how people feel about the 80s etc and the various subcultures! Do they not exist anymore or have I just grown up? Grin

Skinny jeans, jumper and converse are standard mum-wear round here for younger mums. We're just to damn tired to bother with all the accessories and hair straightening. Plus putting on shedloads of eyeliner is a complete ballache when you've got a little gremlin pulling at your arm every thirty seconds.

I went to reading festival a couple of years ago after a bit of a break and it was so stark in contrast to my youth, all of the kids just seemed so homogeneous and there was no subgroups- punks hated goths who tolerated grungers that looked down on emos who fought with townies who picked on preppy kids who were scared of goths. It was just one big group and they all looked the same.

wontletmelogin · 29/09/2019 19:10

I was emo. Went to a Good Charlotte concert recently, it was great being back in the moshpit! I still have a few nods fashion wise back to it but mostly wear more fashionable clothes now! Grin

Far2go46 · 29/09/2019 19:11

Think matey from the lostprophets killed it

doctorsnewcompanion · 29/09/2019 19:15

I'm still here! Not quite thirty yet and mother of one but I still regularly attend gigs, wear skinnies and check shirt, eyeliner, coloured hair and a few piercings!
I see quite a lot regularly but it may be bevause of where I live :)

doctorsnewcompanion · 29/09/2019 19:15

*because ffs

TheSweatyPregnancy · 29/09/2019 19:16

We still exist, we’ve just had to adapt so we can exist in the adult world!

I’m still living in black skinnies, band T-shirt’s and vans! But I’m now a mum and have a serious job so I can’t hide behind a huge fringe anymore Grin

Still listening to the same emo music from 2006-2009ish even now. Had my baby dancing to my chemical romance yesterday in fact!

RubbingHimSourly · 29/09/2019 19:17

They morphed into both hybrids.

I'm sorry, but you aren't a goth if you haven't spent gone out in a retro wedding dress with black tear drops painted on your cheek clutching a shredded, parasol. Nine of this chuck on some black skinnys with a band t-shirt and hope for the best.

If theyre going to goth, at least make me do a double take. FFS !

ooopsupsideyourhead · 29/09/2019 19:22

I studied abroad for 2004-6. My best friend picked me up from the railway station on my return. We stoped at a crossing...

Me “what is that?”
Her “haha, obviously you’ve missed the emo phase”

We were punk rock kids - baggy jeans and chains... ahhh memories...

Mac47 · 29/09/2019 19:25

Dd is definitely emo and rocks it. I love seeing her have such personal style.

YukoandHiro · 29/09/2019 19:30

I was a skate punk in my late teens/at uni. Anyone here still listen to a bit of BoySetsFire?

Anyway, I think what's changed is the way people consume music. There's no need to purchase anymore so people quite literally aren't buying into any one particular scene or identity.

I actually think it's quite sad. I liked having a skate crew and was an ardent glitter wearing indie kid at school before that. I personally think tribes are a good thing when you're growing up and trying to understand yourself and where you fit.

SalemSpellman · 29/09/2019 19:34

I'm not sure where I fitted in - giant flair combats with loads of random straps hanging off them, with a corset. Pink hair and black eye make up.

Alternative to the corset was a pucca t-shirt. I also had a floor length black Ben Sherman Parker. My era was. 2001/2003/2003.

DadCanIHaveAZedgie · 29/09/2019 19:59

Having a crick in your neck from flicking your fringe out if your eyes. One of my boyfriends developed a twitch, still did the hair flick even after he'd had his hair cut.

TheDarkPassenger · 29/09/2019 20:06

Here I am 🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️

Nah I don’t do the eyeliner anymore or the weird hair but I’m still quite gothic I suppose

Oysterbabe · 29/09/2019 20:06

Basically this

To wonder what happened to Emos?
TheDarkPassenger · 29/09/2019 20:07

Oh and. When we all meet up again once a year TRUST ME, there are lots of them that are still emotional at 30 odd years old!

TheDarkPassenger · 29/09/2019 20:08

oh I meant emo.. my phone changed it

honeyloops · 29/09/2019 20:14

Grown up emo kid here - nearly 30, still go to Slam Dunk festival, listen to Paramore in the car a LOT, and still own Converse. I also have a very sensible grown up job, house, etc, and manage to keep the eyeliner to a minimum day to day...God, I miss being 16!

TERFisNotAnInsult · 29/09/2019 20:15

I'm a 35 year old emo Blush

TERFisNotAnInsult · 29/09/2019 20:16

And I still do the dramatic eyeliner, weird hair and band tshirts 😂😂😂

MCR 4 EVA 🤣

Camomila · 29/09/2019 20:16

We had 'indies' and 'emos'
I was more an 'indie' bit more hippyish and less eyeliner/angst.

I had an excellent skate shoes, thigh high stripy socks, demin mini skirt and layers of lacy/ethnic tops outfit I used to wear to gigs.

I still do a version of it with textured knit tights, a skirt/dungaree dress, and a big cosy jumper.

MonstranceClock · 29/09/2019 20:19

Emos vs chavs.

I was an emo but more grunge. I still am tbh, and I’m 26.

transformandriseup · 29/09/2019 20:20

I couldn’t pull off the hair but wore black skinny jeans with a studded belt, converse and a black tshirts. Plus nightmare before christmas stuff. I still have a tshirt and hoodie. Some college friends were very full on.

PennyNotSoWise · 29/09/2019 20:25

OP, it's so weird, I was thinking this earlier! I heard High Hopes by Panic! At The Disco and smiled to myself remembering how you'd get the dreaded "Eeeeemmmooooo" shouted at you across the corridor at school if anyone knew you listened to them, but that song was pretty mainstream so I guess they're kind of cool now?

I wondered if Emo's still existed amongst the yoof of today, I haven't seen one in years Grin

I was never an emo as such, never dressed like one, but I loved the music and still do. Fall Out Boy (but I luffed Patrick more than Pete), Green Day, Paramore, PATD. This thread has got me reminiscing, I'm off to Youtube Grin

Seren85 · 29/09/2019 20:32

I was just before emo so we were moshers. The sorta skate punk/nu metal hybrid. Huge jeans, chains, fluffy backpacks etc I still haven't grown up and wear ripped jeans, band tshirts, leather jacket, too much eyeliner other than at work (became a lawyer so I did grow up a bit). Was at a metal club night last night and noticed the youngsters seem to dress like we did.

mildshock · 29/09/2019 20:47

Waves to fellow former emos!

I'm 28 now. I think we all just grew up and realised we looked a tiny bit dramatic.

I still wear eyeliner (though much neater) and I have an emo playlist for when I'm feeling nostalgic Grin

I particularly miss my lovely thick fringe but it's too much hassle with 2DC to get ready every morning.
