I've written an absolute shitload of Chalet School quizzes on Funtrivia. I'm trying to do one for each book.

PhilSwagielka · 06/10/2019 13:15

@TheMustressMhor Unpopular opinion: I genuinely liked CCGU, punctuation aside. I think Mary-Lou and Jack were massively OOC, and I'm surprised the MBR families didn't do more to help Len, but I loved Len's kids and Miss Annersley. It was one of those fanfics where you could tell who the author liked and hated. I liked what she did with Con too. And Miss Ferrars and Miss Wilmot were blatantly a couple.

Doubleraspberry · 07/10/2019 07:31

I did 75 Chalet School quizzes last night. Obviously I blame you all for my zombie-like appearance this morning.

Heartburned · 07/10/2019 09:25

Re HG in Exile, I just checked (I did the quiz and got ten out of ten, but think that I answered the Exile question after I had done the others on the basis of whoever was left...?) -- Hilary Burn is HG at the beginning of Exile when the school is still in Tyrol. Maria Marani takes over once the school reopens in Guernsey.

Slightly more mysteriously, Cornelia has become HG when the school reopens again in Plas Howell in Goes To It, despite the fact that this is during the same academic year as Maria's HGship. (The plane crash where both Maria and Cornelia sustain burns is in the autumn term, and the school moves to Plas Howell over the following Easter holidays -- I think I'd forgotten they're only in Guernsey for two terms!)

There's no reference to Maria at all in Goes To It, other than the fact that she's not been interned as an enemy alien like Frieda, so it's not clear why she doesn't come to Plas Howell and continue as HG for the final term of the year -- she still hasn't recovered after the plane crash (despite Joey singing at her Grin)? Would an Austrian citizen have been allowed to do war work in the UK?

CreamJug · 07/10/2019 12:59

Isn't Joey a soprano? Or are we not told what voice type she has? It's just that we're so often told her voice is like that of a boy chorister I assumed she was a soprano.

But just rereading the Dropbox Rivals, and right at the beginning, when Joey meets Herr Braun on the lakeside, she has a 'sweet contralto voice that bespake her a singer'...? (Which of course contrasts with Miss Brown's 'hard metallic voice'... Grin)

Yugi · 07/10/2019 15:31

Elinor Brent-Dyer was top of the trending list on that Funtrivia page just now. I wonder what caused that?? Wink

Howyoualldoworkme · 08/10/2019 13:04

Ok now I've found the quizzes.
We'll be eating out of tins and wearing rags for the foreseeable future...Grin

QuaterMiss · 08/10/2019 13:26

I did two of those things then firmly closed the site. I’m still bewildered by an entire lost Summer.

No. More.

NiffleTime · 08/10/2019 17:25

Ahh, just had a wonderful time reading through the thread - I used to love these! May I have the Dropbox link please?

readsalotgirl63 · 08/10/2019 19:58

May I also have the Dropbox link ? I confess to writing my dissertation on Girls school stories of the early 20th century - largely featuring EBD and Dorita Fairlie Bruce. I was a childhood fan of the Chalet School and a closet reader as an adult but was thrilled to discover Friends of the Chalet School and Girls Gone By Publishers. Also thrilled by threads on mumsnet but am resisting the quizzes. Will go and have some kaffee instead !

readsalotgirl63 · 08/10/2019 23:19

Yay thanks @Parker231

AthelstaneTheUnready · 09/10/2019 18:07

Jack's bloody done it again!

(am up to 'Kenya' which I've not read before)

'Slipped' a little something into his wife's coffee again. And now she's unconscious. Just like good old Uncle Jem used to. Hmm

I wonder what exactly is the medical justification for doing it without the victim's patient's knowledge? Does it not work if you know about it Hmm.

NewSchoolNewName · 09/10/2019 21:02

Clearly informed consent wasn’t considered important back then.

I’m pretty sure that sedating people without their consent would be classed as assault these days.

Howyoualldoworkme · 09/10/2019 22:48

I'm a book or two ahead of Kenya and Jack drugs Joey again (while she's pregnant!) and she knows he's doing it!

funnelfanjo · 10/10/2019 16:18

I've completed transcribing 'Jo to the Rescue' and have sent to Parker for the Dropbox in both Word and Kindle formats. I think this completes the main school series! Huge, huge thanks to @Chouetted for sending me her copy.

I've not read it before and I have to say, I really enjoyed it. I quite enjoy the minutiae of domestic life. It seems to me that 'Jo goes to the Oberland' is the follow up to this one, so if you enjoyed that, you'll enjoy this one.

There were a couple of genuine laugh out loud moments, as well as some trusted favourite phrases and plot devices, and the usual sliding about of timey-wimey ages and years.

Howyoualldoworkme · 10/10/2019 16:20

funnelfanjo Blessings on your shiny well brushed head and may many cakes stuffed with honey, nuts and cream be yours Grin

Parker231 · 10/10/2019 18:48

Big big thank you to @funnelfanjo for the final book - that’s another few hours I’m going to lose to the CS!

If anyone would like the book - please send your requests to the Dropbox and I’ll give access asap.

Papergirl1968 · 10/10/2019 19:04

Yes please Parker. I hope o can open it as I couldn’t open Excitements.
Many thanks Fanjo.

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 10/10/2019 19:07

funnelfanjo - the one book I don't think I've read - thank you Flowers

Parker231 · 10/10/2019 19:08

Papergirl - the folder has Kindle and word versions. If you can send your request direct to the Dropbox, I’ll share it.

Papergirl1968 · 10/10/2019 19:25

I think I’ve sent it on Dropbox, Parker. I don’t know what the heck I’m doing really. Just tried to open excitements again but no luck 🤷🏼‍♀️

Parker231 · 10/10/2019 19:54

Dropbox has co-operated and let me do a mass message so you all should have the Dropbox link to Jo to the rescue in word and kindle versions.

Papergirl1968 · 10/10/2019 19:55

Got it and can open it! Thank you, both.

Lonelykettleshed · 10/10/2019 20:12

Funnel, thank you. So excited now.

QuaterMiss · 10/10/2019 21:03

Wonderful - I’m just at the start of a three hour train journey and too tired for any other reading.

Thank you both!
