Bin day - Now once a fortnight

Anyone else have their general waste taken once every 2 weeks?

It used to be once a week, they've changed it to once every 2 weeks and Im really struggling. I've got 3 (yes 3) recycling bins, which for the most part get used to capacity. There's always a little room left. (Myself and DH aren't driving yet so we order a lot from Amazon)

I recycle everything that can possibly be recycled and I've scoured the website to make sure I know what can and can't be recycled.

My issue is that I have 2 young children in nappies. I've tried reusable nappies and I can't find anything that doesn't give them nappy rash. Also excema runs in the family and DS is riddled with it, the reusable nappy irritates it. So those are out of the equation.

I emailed the council to request a bigger waste bin and explain the situation. They have fobbed me off. Offering another recycling bin. Which would leave me with 4 bloody recycling bins!!
The nappies alone fill the general waste bin in a 2 week period.

Is anyone else in a similar boat? What did you do?
AIBU to be really cheesed off that the council have just sent a pointless, unhelpful, generic email back and haven't listened to the problem?

How big is the general waste bin, must be quite small to have that problem?

BananaPlant · 11/09/2019 17:21

I thought bin day once a fortnight was normal now? Ours has been that way for years.

Coldilox · 11/09/2019 17:22

Mine has been every three weeks for a lost 5 years now. It’s just about do-able, but if we have any extra clear-outs or anything it has to go to the tip as no spare space.

Coldilox · 11/09/2019 17:22

*almost 5 years

Winsomelosesome · 11/09/2019 17:23

Yes we've had 2 weekly collections for years, everyone seems to manage. Larger families get bigger bins though I think.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 11/09/2019 17:23

Contact your local councillor. Enough pushy councillors can get decisions reversed.

Chocolatecake12 · 11/09/2019 17:23

We have had 2 weekly waste collections for years now. They alternate between general waste one week and recycling the following week with food waste collections weekly. Lots of areas do this.

DisneyMillie · 11/09/2019 17:23

Mine is every 2 weeks and was manageable with a child in nappies and an indoor cat who needed regular litter changes. Possibly you need to request a bigger bin rather than an extra one? Ours come in two sizes.

summersherewishiwasnt · 11/09/2019 17:24

Been fortnightly collections here for years. You get used it and recycle everything possible . We are a large family and have no problems. So I think Yabu to not manage.

WhatsMyPassword · 11/09/2019 17:24

Fortnightly for ages, a decade at least

Hannah021 · 11/09/2019 17:24

yes it is for us as well, they collect it once every fortnight, and we are 3 properties of 5 flats each !!! you can imagine the situation!

HappyDinosaur · 11/09/2019 17:24

Can you request nappy bin bags from your council? Ours is also once a fortnight, but if you've a young child you get a roll of big purple bin bags which can go out as surplus to the main bin.

Rachie1973 · 11/09/2019 17:24

We have 3 bins. General waste, recycling and a garden/food waste one. The food waste is collected weekly, but the other 2 alternate weeks. I thought this was fairly common now.

PookieDo · 11/09/2019 17:25

Yes mine is 2 weeks
Week 1 general week 2 recycling
Food taken every week

Recycling is what keeps it down

DeanImpala67 · 11/09/2019 17:26

We have fortnightly household waste collections, but they give you purple bags for putting nappies in separately. Do your council not offer any additional service just for nappies?

CSIblonde · 11/09/2019 17:26

I do a lot of squishing down what's in there so I can add more. We have 2bins by my front window for 3flats & it's really not enough. I've also had to spray bleach around the lids re flies as the other flats dont double bag any very smelly food waste & clean the inside as their carrier bags leak regularly.

FrogFairy · 11/09/2019 17:26

Ours are collected every three weeks, but they have a separate collection for nappies.

TixieLix · 11/09/2019 17:26

Surprised anyone has weekly collections of household rubbish as we've had fortnightly for a couple of years at least. I have a household waste wheelie bin, a garden waste wheelie which are collected on alternative weeks. Then there is one lidded box for paper, one box for tins/plastic and one box for glass that are collected weekly. In the next few months they're replacing the small boxes with two wheelie bins - one for plastic/tin and glass and the other for paper, so I'll have four wheelie bins making the front of my house look unattractive (no side access).

AnneLovesGilbert · 11/09/2019 17:26

Same here for years. Can’t remember when we last had weekly general bin collection.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 11/09/2019 17:26

Hmmm we’ve lived here 4 years and it’s been fortnightly the whole time. In that time we’ve had 2 kids and haven’t struggled. There are 2 different size bins though, most houses have the standard size but a few have a slimline one. Do you maybe have a smaller one compared to your neighbours? Do you recycle absolutely everything possible? We do have to go to the tip a fair but but I suppose that stuff is mainly stuff that wouldn’t be collected curbside anyway :-s

RibenaMonsoon · 11/09/2019 17:27

It's been every week for general waste and every 2 weeks for recycling. Today is the last weekly collection.

It's a standard size wheelie bin.
Our recycling bins are double the size.

Been fortnightly collections here for years now.

How long until you’re down to one child in nappies?

TheFairyCaravan · 11/09/2019 17:28

I can't remember when we last had our bins collected weekly. At least 12 or 13 years ago I reckon.

saraclara · 11/09/2019 17:28

Yep. Fortnightly for as long as I can remember. General bin one week, recycling the next. All hell broke loose when it was first mooted by the council, but in reality it's fine.
It's possible to ask for an extra large bin, but I haven't seen many of them around.

Hederex · 11/09/2019 17:28

Yes, it's been fortnightly here for at least 10 years. One week they take black bin, the next green bin and recycling.

I don't have a problem with space, really, unless I'm decorating or something, although when I had children in nappies I took a trip to the tip fairly frequently.

I hate that in summer my bins smell and a couple of times we've had maggots.
