Anyone else have their general waste taken once every 2 weeks?

It used to be once a week, they've changed it to once every 2 weeks and Im really struggling. I've got 3 (yes 3) recycling bins, which for the most part get used to capacity. There's always a little room left. (Myself and DH aren't driving yet so we order a lot from Amazon)

I recycle everything that can possibly be recycled and I've scoured the website to make sure I know what can and can't be recycled.

My issue is that I have 2 young children in nappies. I've tried reusable nappies and I can't find anything that doesn't give them nappy rash. Also excema runs in the family and DS is riddled with it, the reusable nappy irritates it. So those are out of the equation.

I emailed the council to request a bigger waste bin and explain the situation. They have fobbed me off. Offering another recycling bin. Which would leave me with 4 bloody recycling bins!!
The nappies alone fill the general waste bin in a 2 week period.

Is anyone else in a similar boat? What did you do?
AIBU to be really cheesed off that the council have just sent a pointless, unhelpful, generic email back and haven't listened to the problem?

Fortnightly for years for us too . I think you'll get used to it , it's just making sure you recycle everything. My waste bin sometimes on collection day is not even full . My recycling bin for plastic & glass is 2 thirds full so just shows you how much you use but I wash and recycle everything including tins , shampoo bottles etc .

StrongTea · 11/09/2019 17:55

We are monthly for general waste, plastics, cardboard, garden stuff. Also glass. Weekly for food.

aspoonfulofyourownmedicine · 11/09/2019 17:58

We've been on fortnightly collections for years, household one week, recycling the following. It was a faff at first, but now our household bin is barely filled every fortnight as we're more conscious with recyclable packaging or buy loose products, things like fruit and veg peelings either go to my rabbit or in the compost bin. We have more recycling than waste

Topseyt · 11/09/2019 17:58

Fortnightly collections here for years. As long as I can remember. One week general waste and the next recycling.

I'm sure it began while I still had a child in nappies and I had no problems. I find the majority of stuff can be recycled so we have two large green wheelie bins for that and a black one for general waste.

Ravenblack · 11/09/2019 17:58

@RibenaMonsoon We have had fortnightly collections since 1999. Can't believe anyone has only just started to have it.

We had 2 young-ish kids too.

Recycle everything you can, from tablet boxes to microwave meal boxes. EVERYthing.

We never had any problems. You will get used to it.

Ravenblack · 11/09/2019 17:59

As a pp said, you will have the green waste and recyclables taken on the alternative weeks.

redchocolatebutton · 11/09/2019 17:59

we don't have waste collection at all (different country)
we have to take our rubbish to a communal collection point.

Redglitter · 11/09/2019 18:02

All our bins are 3 weekly except the Brown one (food & garden) which is fortnightly

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 11/09/2019 18:02

Double whammy here - first they took it to fortnightly collections, then they shrank the size of the general waste bin by half, to try and encourage more recycling

This is us. I can't stand having the stuff lying around so we do one skip visit a week to offload recyling/waste. Plus they don't pick up garden waste or glass so it's easy to fill the car. It's often the same man and he's fascinated how much cardboard we bring.

We live by the sea and the village has a resident fox, rats and giant seagulls so for me 2 weeks is far too long.

ineedaholidaynow · 11/09/2019 18:02

We have fortnightly collection but don't have a bin, just black bags

RezCowgirl · 11/09/2019 18:03

We still have weekly collections for the black bin however that is because we have no recycling collected from our area.

Fatted · 11/09/2019 18:04

Is this thread from 2009?!

I had two kids in nappies at the same time and never managed to fill our wheelie bin with nappies alone in a fortnight.

YABU.

IAmALazyArse · 11/09/2019 18:04

God. How much do you actually order that you fill 3 larger than normal recycle bins😮 Especially when you say you fold and squish😮 I can't even imagine.

Fortnightly here too. We don't have food waste bin. Just general, recycle and garden waste.

Orangepear · 11/09/2019 18:04

You have 3 recycling bins? I went to a recycling open day and they said if a family of 4 are filling to the top one recycling bin per fortnight, they are consuming too much. That made me think as I was filling mine!

MeganChips · 11/09/2019 18:04

We have ours collected once a fortnight. We managed just fine and it hasn’t been a problem until they have switched the recycling to every 4 weeks. We didn’t get any notice, there is nothing on the website and they just turn up when they feel like it.

The problem is, because no one ever knows when they’re coming, the street is permanently strewn with bins and people are recycling less. Any overflow gets chucked in the main bin which is collected more regularly.

It’s really irritating.

Trinpy · 11/09/2019 18:04

We had this problem when we had 2 in nappies and fortnightly collections, but we didn't have a wheelie bin, just one of the smaller dustbins. DH used to take a bag full of used nappies to work with him and sneak it onto the big bin there Blush. We potty trained our eldest very young for this exact reason.

Curlyshabtree · 11/09/2019 18:05

Yes, forthrightly here too. Even when dts were in nappies it was never full to the brim.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 11/09/2019 18:05

Surprised anyone has weekly collections of household rubbish

We have weekly collections for waste, recycling and green waste (last one if paid for though). Normal bins, no wheelies.

Every so often boringly often someone pipes up that we should change to wheelie bins, even though the council has repeatedly consulted and the response is overwhelmingly no, in favour of retaining weekly collections instead

BarrenFieldofFucks · 11/09/2019 18:06

We alternate as well. So recycling and general waste fortnightly, and food waste every week.

Pinkypurple35 · 11/09/2019 18:07

We’ve always been fortnightly and with a much hated ‘slim bin’ I.e. tiny thin general waste bin too.

Solihooley · 11/09/2019 18:08

We have fortnightly collections, have done for ages. I’m surprised you have had weekly collections. We were struggling with a standard wheelie bin (which is pretty small) so I requested a larger one and they sent it out. I think there might be a rule if you are a family of 5 or more you get the bigger size where we are. You could tell a porkie and say you have an extra child in the house? I don’t think the waste partnership would check. We just about manage with the large size bin.

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 11/09/2019 18:10

As everyone else said, been fortnightly for years: general waste one week, recycling the next. Do you have a food waste bin? We have one of those in addition which is emptied every week and using that makes a definite difference to how full our bin gets - as well as being nicely eco :-)

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 11/09/2019 18:15

Would you reconsider cloth nappies again? I cloth nappied two of mine (at the same time) I'm happy for you to pm me if you'd like advice re:rashes as it can be one or a comb of things like using too much laundry detergent, not rinsed enough, just needs hanging out in the sun more, fit/type of nappy that would work better for your baby's skin like bamboo fleece.

Nightmanagerfan · 11/09/2019 18:16

If you want help on the reusable nappy front join the Nappy Lady Facebook group for advice. There are lots of wise real nappy users who can help with wash routine etc to minimise nappy rash. My son is in reusables and has never had nappy rash.

Likethebattle · 11/09/2019 18:16

We’re now three weekly! We were fortnightly!
