Anyone else have their general waste taken once every 2 weeks?

It used to be once a week, they've changed it to once every 2 weeks and Im really struggling. I've got 3 (yes 3) recycling bins, which for the most part get used to capacity. There's always a little room left. (Myself and DH aren't driving yet so we order a lot from Amazon)

I recycle everything that can possibly be recycled and I've scoured the website to make sure I know what can and can't be recycled.

My issue is that I have 2 young children in nappies. I've tried reusable nappies and I can't find anything that doesn't give them nappy rash. Also excema runs in the family and DS is riddled with it, the reusable nappy irritates it. So those are out of the equation.

I emailed the council to request a bigger waste bin and explain the situation. They have fobbed me off. Offering another recycling bin. Which would leave me with 4 bloody recycling bins!!
The nappies alone fill the general waste bin in a 2 week period.

Is anyone else in a similar boat? What did you do?
AIBU to be really cheesed off that the council have just sent a pointless, unhelpful, generic email back and haven't listened to the problem?

Side note, OP, but I found reusable wipes totally prevented nappy rash - I use Cheeky Wipes but there are plenty of brands out there. It also saves a lot of money pretty quickly

You must be producing a lot of waste to fill a wheelie bin in a week!

Ds is now tube fed and his supplies are a mix of recyclable and not, and my parents live with us and my dad has none recyclable medical stuff too so our bins are now right to the brim by collection day but still doable. If the amount increases we will have to apply for an extra on medical grounds.

We have been like this for years
Tiny black bin every fortnight
Bags for:
Paper
Plastic
Cardboard
Box for:
Tins
Food waste

But we do have separate sacks for nappies which came in when they reduced the bin sizes

It's just the way of the world now

PleaseGoogleIt · 11/09/2019 18:21

Ours has been fortnightly for years, I didn't know there were places who still had weekly collections, you've done well to get that long.

It's not easy but we generally manage, if we don't then we go to the tip with the excess.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 11/09/2019 18:22

OP it’s possibly whatever you were Washing the cloth nappies in that was inflaming the eczema. I the fabric itself won’t be the problem. Certainly not as much of a problem as plasticky nappies on their skin.

Join lots of reusable nappy groups and ask for eczema specific advice. Worth trying as you’ve got at least another 3 years worth of nappies ahead of you.

branstonfickle · 11/09/2019 18:23

It works for me but sometimes my black bin does overflow by one or two bags as there are 4 of us. When you think about it though it does seem gross to have black bin waste sitting there for 2 weeks, especially if it’s dog poo or nappies etc. My friend’s black bin always stinks when you walk past it because of her dog’s poo bags

TheWernethWife · 11/09/2019 18:24

Three bins at our house (plus a smaller one for food recycling) - one for paper/card, one for tins/jars and one for general household waste. They are emptied on a three week cycle and the food bin is done every week.

ElizaDee · 11/09/2019 18:24

Take a bin bag of nappies and leave it in their lobby. Bonus points for tipping it out.

Howdidido · 11/09/2019 18:25

Bin once a fortnight. Recycling once a fortnight. Food bin(s) once a week.

But did find out council will give us an extra special coloured bag for nappies.

Absa · 11/09/2019 18:27

Yeh we've had fortnightly bins for years and years.
Some areas near me they have gone to every 3 weeks now!

Choice4567 · 11/09/2019 18:29

I had 3 children in nappies and didn’t have a full general waste bin on fortnightly collection. You must generate a lot of other waste?

We have a family of 6, fortnightly collection for both bins. One normal size bin of each and neither are full after 2 weeks

Notajogger · 11/09/2019 18:29

I didn't think anyone still even had weekly black bin collections any more.

We have recycling and food collected weekly, landfill fortnightly.

You need to look at how much is coming into the house if this is an issue - we usually fill one or two small carrier bags a fortnight. We try and minimise packaging, not buy stuff online, buy bagless veg etc. Buy less in general.

Also a lot of bags can be saved and recycled with carrier bags at some supermarkets.

Also look up the Terracycle scheme to see what is recyclable near you - stuff that wouldn't easily be recyclable otherwise like crisp packets, biscuit wrappers, toothbrushes, biro pens, coffee pods etc. Loads of stuff and it raises money for charity too.

Could be worse. Here in Conwy we get a general waste collection once a month.

Recycling and food waste is still collected weekly but the whole process here is just so complicated.

Frouby · 11/09/2019 18:33

We have a smaller general bin taken once a fortnight, a normal size glass/tin/plastic bin and a cardboard paper bin. Recycling bins are collected once a month which isn't really enough. If I recycle all glass and plastic and cans it's overflowing by week 3 and then I end up using the general waste bin for stuff that could be recycled. And then that ends up overflowing.

Dh takes about 4 black bags a month to the glass/tin bank.

Rach000 · 11/09/2019 18:34

There wont be many places that get weekly collections now. So no point complaining. You must have a lot of waste to fill a bin each week. You must use a lot if nappies as well. We have 2 kids, only 1 in nappies but never fill the bin in 2 weeks. We have forgot to put it out once or twice so had to wait 4 weeks and just managed with pushing it down but it still closed.

berlinbabylon · 11/09/2019 18:35

We've had fortnightly collections for years, too.

And a couple of months ago they changed the day of collection so we suddenly ended up with the recycling bin being emptied twice running.

Then we were away so missed the normal rubbish collection, so we effectively couldn't get our black normal rubbish bin emptied for 5 weeks. It wasn't quite full when it was collected.

All I can think OP is that your standard bin is one of the small ones? We managed fine with one child in nappies (though to be fair we might have had weekly collections at that point, smaller bins though).

Louiselouie0890 · 11/09/2019 18:38

I'm a family of four with 2 in nappies, one waste bin every two weeks one recycling every two weeks. I honestly dont know how you produce so much waste

Tartsamazeballs · 11/09/2019 18:40

I've always had fortnightly collections with my 2 under 2. It's fairly easily managed imo.

MerryDeath · 11/09/2019 18:42

that's normal here. 1 DS in disposable nappies and 2 adults. we are absolutely fine/ample for capacity (as long as we remember to put the blasted bin out in time).

actually, i missed last normal bin day as we have just moved in and i had failed to put it all the way out by 7am, here they come at about 0705 ffs. so it's been 4 weeks since our bin was collected and the lid doesn't shut all the way but it is all in there!

Lou0390 · 11/09/2019 18:44

Ours is every 3 weeks which has been a nightmare with 2 in nappies. Our local tip now won't accept general waste either Confused

Pardonwhat · 11/09/2019 18:46

Mines once a month. It’s a tiny bin. It’s hell. Fortnightly is luxurious.

PivotPivotPivottt · 11/09/2019 18:47

Every 3 weeks here. I have a toddler in nappies and 2 cats who use litter trays 🤢. Used to be fortnightly until they recently introduced another recycling bin for glass, cans and plastic rather than all recycling going in the one bin. Fortnightly was manageable but 3 weeks worth of rubbish and shit in your bin is rather unpleasant I have to say. Not to mention how heavy the bin is by then, I hurt my hand last week trying to get it out so made me think how difficult it could be for the elderly or people with disabilities.

Celebelly · 11/09/2019 18:54

Ours is every two weeks and has been for ages. It did get pretty full when DD was in disposables as we also have two cats so litter trays, but since she's been in reusable it's fine. We can order extra recycling bins if we need.

Sleepyblueocean · 11/09/2019 18:56

We have weekly for general waste but smaller size bins. We have an incontinent teenager and just manage although it can be a tight squeeze in school holidays.

Aaarrgghhh · 11/09/2019 19:02

We get two (because our child has a disability, we aren’t special lol) and we still struggle somewhat. Would buying a second bin be an option? I may be wrong but I think they can be purchased.
