Ds7 fell in lake while canoeing and is now sick

Lovethetimeyouhave · 28/08/2019 22:45

Ds went canoeing earlier today, he fell into the lake and tonight has been sick, time from lake to sickness is about 9 hours.

I am a worry wart. Ds already had an scratch on his hand before going canoeing.

We are at my mums in west England as dad has cancer and is in hospital. I am panicking now about ds too, is it worth ringing 111?

Always ring 111 if you’re worried don’t wait for MN!

Has he a temperature? One episode of sickness or combined with other symptoms? Is he rousable?

IceIceCoffee · 28/08/2019 22:51

I have no idea op I’m just commenting in the hope it may appear more visibility to others who can help

IceIceCoffee · 28/08/2019 22:51

Visible

Todaythiscouldbe · 28/08/2019 22:51

Did he swallow any water?
What has he eaten/drunk since?
A call to 111 may put your mind at rest but they are very likely to tell you to go to an out of hours appointment

SleepWarrior · 28/08/2019 22:52

I'd base it on his symptoms. One vomit in a generally well boy (no raging fever, pain, worrying signs etc) then keep fluids up and watch and wait.

It could just be a run of the mill tummy bug, in fact that's the most likely scenario.

LisaMontgomery · 28/08/2019 22:53

Call 111. You aren't an expert and aren't sure if it is serious enough to get him seen ASAP. They are there to help you make that decision.

Lovethetimeyouhave · 28/08/2019 22:54

2 lots of vomit so far. He says no stomach ache, he says he may have swallowed some water! No fever. I'm going to ring 111, I am in the sticks though and dont drive!

Perhaps he druk some of the water and given himself a bug. I know that kayakers who fall in the river trent often talk about the trent trots. I wouldn't worry unless prlonged vomiting/ or other symptoms. 111 will put your mind at rest.

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 28/08/2019 22:56

I would get him seen to be safe. If there's a chance he inhaled any water it could make him very poorly.

paddyclampitt · 28/08/2019 22:57

I'd say no fever is a good thing!

Rememberfluffthecat · 28/08/2019 22:57

Give him coke. It neutralises the algae from the lake. Probably swallowed some water

Jedimindreader · 28/08/2019 23:00

Did he drink any Coca Cola after coming out of the water? Friend's DS did some open water swimming and they all had to drink it after coming out as it combats any nasty bugs.

Rememberfluffthecat · 28/08/2019 23:00

As in Coca Cola . I open water swim and if the algae is not right this is the advice we are given (can’t remember if the bad is blue or green that makes you ill)

Bunnybigears · 28/08/2019 23:02

I was also going to suggest Coke, let it go flat first.

There are a number of waterways in the UK currently experiencing blu-green algae outbreaks, some have been reported to in the Lake District and in a number of other areas.
This can make you a little ill if you ingest it. Check if there is a bloom in the area your son was canoeing, it may be the source of his sickness. And ring 111.

The article below is focused on the risks to pets, and humans don't get as ill as dogs but explains a bit about algae blooms.

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/aug/16/blue-green-algae-poses-blooming-danger-to-paddling-pets

We get this at our local lake ( Australia) and they close it to swimming and water activities as it gives people the vomits and the dire rears.

Fever has started and headache, 111 are calling back within the next half an hour!

I hadn't heard of that about coke so will raid my mums fridge, apart from that there aren't any shops for over a mile, we are really in the countryside

My son fell in a pond 2 years ago, he swallowed water & later that evening I panicked after reading about second hand drowning or some sort. I rang hospital & spok to a doctor who asked me was he lethargic or out of character, I said no he had a bath & dinner and was playing as normal so she was happy not to see him but to keep an eye out for him being lethargic, dont remember if she asked me if he vomited but he didnt. Hope all is okay but I always ring just to be safe x

justasking111 · 28/08/2019 23:10

Hope he is OK. My DS has been ill in the past surfing, not pleasant.

DishingOutDone · 28/08/2019 23:10

Seeing as its now gone to fever and headache, its a good thing they are going to call back. Hope all is well OP. I know I would be worried too.

ViaSacra · 28/08/2019 23:10

This is a possibility (albeit very unlikely as it’s quite rare in the UK)

www.nhs.uk/conditions/leptospirosis/

One of my dd’s friends contracted it after accidentally swallowing canal water.

ViaSacra · 28/08/2019 23:13

Ah, hadn’t seen that he only fell in 9 hours ago. I doubt Weil’s disease would have become symptomatic quite that quickly.
