Ds7 fell in lake while canoeing and is now sick

Ds went canoeing earlier today, he fell into the lake and tonight has been sick, time from lake to sickness is about 9 hours.

I am a worry wart. Ds already had an scratch on his hand before going canoeing.

We are at my mums in west England as dad has cancer and is in hospital. I am panicking now about ds too, is it worth ringing 111?

He's possibly swallowed some of the water which rats wee in and algae grow in. Confused

If his scratch looks normal (no heat or inflammation) it's unlikely to be the location.

Sips of water, paracetamol and wait for the GP to call you back. If he worsens, ring them and update them.

Haggisfish · 28/08/2019 23:16

I doubt the two are connected but always wise to check.

Coffeeandchocolate9 · 28/08/2019 23:18

No, don't take paracetamol or any drugs until a doctor says it's ok! Coke would be fine.

blue-green algae makes you ill, I think it’s gastro-related.

Idly wonders if that's the same blue-green algae served in health food shops for smoothies?

It was a still lake...

They rang back, told to give ds water and paracetamol, he should be ok to stay at home, to call back if he worsens,

Thank you all for responding, I dont normally panic so much, worry yes, panic no, but with the lake earlier too, it just made me really panic

As someone that has kayaked for over 10 years I’ve had my fair share of drinking dodgy river water! The term Trent tummy used earlier is very much real! It will pass plenty of water and flat coke will help. I’ve had few horrendous episodes of having to sit with a bucket on my knee on the loo through the years! Poor lad hope it doesn’t put him off!

Vomiting is one of the symptoms of secondary drowning so worth keeping an eye out.

www.webmd.com/children/features/secondary-drowning-dry-drowning

May end up being just a coincidence/virus though.

Dinoctoblock · 28/08/2019 23:38

This happened to my 5yo DS, he went sailing in the Easter holidays and was encouraged to jump into the lake at the end of the lesson. That night he vomited 5 times. I quizzed him the next day and he thought he had swallowed some of the lake water. Want to reassure you that he was totally fine after this, bit peaky the next day and the day after was back to normal.

Hope your DS recovers quickly.

JoyceDivision · 28/08/2019 23:38

Def agree coca cola, we've had to use before

hoodiemum · 28/08/2019 23:39

No medical expertise, but we once went kayaking in Dordogne and kids swallowed some water. Middle of the night, the noisiest and most violent vomming ever. Next day, we had a very peaceful drive home to UK with very subdued children. No more serious repercussions.

lesleyw1953 · 28/08/2019 23:41

Water rat piss - get him to A and E NOW

Twocoffees · 28/08/2019 23:41

It was a lake. I think get him properly assessed, screened and an appropriate management plan in place. Weils disease is one kind of bacteria that can be in lakes and that would need urgent treatment.

AJ1425 · 28/08/2019 23:43

Please look up dry drowning and see if it fits with your childs symptoms.

Leptospirosis / Weill disease is vanishingly rare and wouldn't materialise so,quickly (I think)

Utini · 28/08/2019 23:45

Weil's disease has a longer incubation period than that, minimum three days.

Treesinaforest · 28/08/2019 23:46

Also look up sepsis symptoms (I have no medical training, just another worrier). Hope he feels better soon

try not to panic him aswell.i know your worried.but him panicking if he sees your worry will make him even worse.try and keep him calm and that in itself will help the both of you.
your worried about your child op.that makes you a good mum.we worry over the small and the big.thats parenthood.
keep your own thoughts rational if you can.your doing everything you can.gt yourself a cuppa and have a rest if you can

cdtaylornats · 28/08/2019 23:58

In the scouts many years ago if there were no dead sheep in the burn for 500 yards it was safe to drink.

katewhinesalot · 29/08/2019 00:01

I liked the typo dire rears. - very apt Grin

I hope ds recovers very quickly op.

I know someone who contacted weils disease years ago. Very nasty but very rare.

jennymanara · 29/08/2019 00:05

Glad you rang to get him checked, but it is probably a tummy bug. All sorts of bacteria in water, so that probably made him sick. Remember being sick is the bodies way of protecting itself. It is to get rid of the bacteria. Hope he is better by tomorrow.

LifeofClimb · 29/08/2019 00:05

Worth checking out. Probably ok but if it is anything... you’ll be in the right place. (If it was me based on recent experiences would 100% get checked)

Catsandchardonnay · 29/08/2019 00:06

I fell in the canal (Blush) and cut my foot, my friend googled Weil’s (sp?) disease and took me straight to the emergency doctor who gave me a tetanus and antibiotics. You need to take this seriously OP.

LifeofClimb · 29/08/2019 00:08

A still lake? If he gets worse definitely take him to the a&e. Weils gets progressively worse - you need to catch it early so it doesn’t do any damage.
