Ds went canoeing earlier today, he fell into the lake and tonight has been sick, time from lake to sickness is about 9 hours.

I am a worry wart. Ds already had an scratch on his hand before going canoeing.

We are at my mums in west England as dad has cancer and is in hospital. I am panicking now about ds too, is it worth ringing 111?

OP has rung 111 and got advice.
It always amazes me how so many on MN go to the worst possible very rare disease whose symptoms do not even fit. If it was weils the DC would not be vomiting yet.

I hope your DS is feeling better soon OP.

I’m afraid it’s an urban/open water myth that drinking Coca Cola helps get rid of bugs from swallowing water when swimming. The

hydrochloric acid in our stomachs is far more effective at that than the phosphoric acid in coke.

@katewhinesalot - no typo. Deliberate. Far less mental stress than remembering how to spell squitters properly.

managedmis · 29/08/2019 00:46

Is this true about coca cola?

Weymo · 29/08/2019 01:47

Inland waters swimmer and boater here. It’s probably just a stomach bug. I used to get them the first time I was in a different river or lake until I ‘acclimatised’.

Enclosed lakes are breeding grounds - all that bird and fish poo, and possible algae.

Weil’s disease is rare. It’s unlikely.

The Coke thing is an urban myth spread by kayakers on whitewater courses, better off just staying hydrated with water.

What’s the lake called? I might be familiar with it.

I took my dd to an outdoor pool and she being a toddler kept trying to use the bucket to drink the water.
12 hours later wakes in the night violently sick, upset tummy, really yellow tmi. I called 111 they said keep her drinking. She was unhappy but drinking and only gave her plain foods.
The weekend hit no better. 111 said the same again. But come the Monday morning after another bad nappy I put it in a few nappy. Bags ( OK not good for the environment but I couldn't put it in my car otherwise and the smell was awful)
Took her to docs and they wanted a sample.. I was like tadah here's one she made earlier lol. 8pm that night got a call she's picked up a bacteria.. Can't think of the name now. She had some antibiotics. And luckily a few days later it was passed e ough to take her out.. And our wedding day!
Glad I took her to gp

It was called giardiasis if I spelled it correctly. And I believe it can be caught from lakes too?

latifayed94 · 29/08/2019 03:10

I’m so sorry to hear this! How is your son doing now? Is everything alright?

Lovethetimeyouhave · 29/08/2019 06:09

Thank you everyone, ds has slept for about 5 hours so that's really good! I'm up as I can hear a rooster haha

Rutland Water has blue green algae atm - there are big signs about it, telling people not to let their dogs in it.

Frouby · 29/08/2019 07:10

We kayak 2 or 3 times a week. Have a look on the website or council website of the lake he was in, they may have information about water quality. We are lucky that our lake has a very good water quality and is tested to check. As other local lakes and rivers have blue algae issues they have also introduced all equipment being taken off site being sterilised before going back in the boathouse.

Was it a lake ? We had a lake where I grew up that did water sports . The local sewage was pumped into it and every time we fell in we were sick that night . 😬
