Hi newbie here so hello 🤦‍♂️

I've recently moved into a lovely detached property but I've noticed a very low level humming sound in the mornings. I'm a very light sleeper so if I wake up I struggle get back to sleep because of this. It sounds like an electrical hum if that makes sense. Or if you lived in a semi and your neighbour was hoovering kinda thing. Wearing earplugs makes it worse as it intensifies the sound. I've tried turning off the boiler and killed the main fuse switch but it's still there! Any ideas? X

Also it's not constant. It appears in random bouts at about 5 seconds in length 🤷‍♂️

Wearing earplugs intensifies the sound? Could you have tinnitus?

Soberfutures · 19/08/2019 08:40

Are u near any electricity pilons? If u are rural and its quiet sometimes u can hear them. Or do u have an xbox or firestick? I've noticed mine kinda buzzing if its left on with power at the socket?

DanielRicciardosSmile · 19/08/2019 08:40

Is it only in the early morning, or all the time? If only the morning, does it always start and stop at the same time?

DanielRicciardosSmile · 19/08/2019 08:42

Cross post, sorry.

Rubydread · 19/08/2019 08:42

Not tinnitus as the noise is mornings only. I wear earplugs to sleep no problems at all.

Our neighbours had trouble with rats and they bought a sonic trap which let's of sounds every few seconds. They could put it on a timer. It really bugged us when we didn't know about it. And even when they moved it the dogs could still hear it and it drove them crazy

NannyR · 19/08/2019 08:43

The main control box for my burglar alarm hums/buzzes but it's a constant sound, not intermittent.

GoingToInfinity · 19/08/2019 08:44

So you charge your phones in the bedroom? Sometimes if the cable isn't quite plugged in to my charger properly it hums when it's charging and it drives me mad!

Rubydread · 19/08/2019 08:44

I'd happily pay for an expert to come and identify the noise lol.

Can you get different types of earplugs that would cancel out the sound?

PollyTheDolly · 19/08/2019 08:45

If you're hearing it more with earplugs sounds more like a vibration type thing?

Rubydread · 19/08/2019 08:46

As I said earlier, I've turned off the mains supply and it was still there. So it's nothing that is plugged in.

If its not the boiler / heating then is it the fridge ? Ours kicks in and makes a humming noise like a vibration, sometimes it’s louder if there is something in slightly the wrong place (ie salad tray against milk carton) .

Alternatively is your house detached - if not it might be the noise from someone else’s house , but I’m still confused why earplugs make it worse.

Herocomplex · 19/08/2019 08:47

Something is resonating then if you still ‘hear’ it through earplugs. Do you have a metal bed frame? Wooden floor? Even metal window frames?

Rubydread · 19/08/2019 08:47

Yes Polly it's exactly like a vibration sound.

Could it be wasps or bees? We had wasps in the loft you could hear them in the bedroom. A low level buzz

mummmy2017 · 19/08/2019 08:50

Cars on the road...
I have it here, drove me mad, till I suddenly realised....

Herocomplex · 19/08/2019 08:51

Something locally to you is being switched on/started up and it’s resonating at a frequency which is being amplified by something close to you in your room, I would suggest.

Try a white noise app?

Rubydread · 19/08/2019 08:51

You can hear it in all rooms even downstairs.

OP posts:
oldmumnewmum · 19/08/2019 08:52

could be air in the pipes?

Seeline · 19/08/2019 08:52

Does it always happen at the same time each morning?
Is it every morning?

What sort of location are you in - miles from anywhere, village, town, near public transport, industry etc?

Rubydread · 19/08/2019 08:53

Maybe Somone is digging a tunnel underneath my house.

OP posts:
EleanorReally · 19/08/2019 08:54

Have you asked your neighbours?

is it your heating/water?

Herocomplex · 19/08/2019 08:54

Can other people hear it?

Wiltshirelass2019 · 19/08/2019 08:55

It’s called the hum it’s a phenomenon around the world. I heard it too when I moved into my new house. I’ve tuned it out now and it doesn’t wake me up anymore x
