Hi newbie here so hello 🤦‍♂️

I've recently moved into a lovely detached property but I've noticed a very low level humming sound in the mornings. I'm a very light sleeper so if I wake up I struggle get back to sleep because of this. It sounds like an electrical hum if that makes sense. Or if you lived in a semi and your neighbour was hoovering kinda thing. Wearing earplugs makes it worse as it intensifies the sound. I've tried turning off the boiler and killed the main fuse switch but it's still there! Any ideas? X

Yes it seems to happen randomly in the mornings. Not every morning. Oddly enough it has been the last 2 Mondays.

We live on a new build estate. It's a countryside location. The noise starts around 5am ish. There is no traffic or anyone around at that time.

is it only mornings?

EleanorReally · 19/08/2019 08:56

can you hear it from outside?

Herocomplex · 19/08/2019 08:57

Oh my goodness, I remember hearing a radio programme about that! Of course.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 19/08/2019 08:58

An old Fridge? Freezer?

Rubydread · 19/08/2019 08:59

WiltshirelassWine

That's exactly the kind of answer I was looking for. Having read the website I can confirm I can hear the hum 🤦‍♂️

freaky

Wiltshirelass2019 · 19/08/2019 09:01

Rubydread it drove me mad trying to find the noise in my house until I came across ‘the hum’. My husband couldn’t hear anything. Anyway I don’t hear it anymore I’m used to it now x

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 19/08/2019 09:01

Could there be a tube tunnel underneath you?

Rubydread · 19/08/2019 09:01

Mornings only and you can't hear it outsideoutside.

OP, could it be that someone has set up a sonic pest scarer? They are devices that are either hi stand or sense movement, but emit a sound that only foxes, pigeons or cats can hear as a deterrent (different frequencies apply) but sometimes humans can kind of detect the vibrations too?

Rethymnon · 19/08/2019 09:04

constant, not “hi stand”

00Sassy · 19/08/2019 09:07

My virgin tv box woke me up this morning, it kind of quietly whirrs and whooshes.
Could it be something like that?

violetbunny · 19/08/2019 09:11

We kept noticing a weird electrical humming vibration at odd but regular times too. Turns it a neighbouring business had installed a massive fuck off server in their building without proper sound insulation. I called the council and made a complaint and they had to beef up the insulation.

MyElbowIsItchy · 19/08/2019 09:16

I hear ‘it’ too! Started in my teens, thought I was going mad. Tried cleaning my ears, rearranging pillows, changing the pillow cases during the night, nothing works so I’m just used to it now.

newtb · 19/08/2019 09:20

Electric cattle fence?

MiltonRoad · 19/08/2019 09:22

Are you near Bristol? They have a hum

RottnestFerry · 19/08/2019 09:27

I get this as well. It nearly drove me mad at first. I even resorted to driving round the countryside at night trying to find the source. I never did. My wife can't hear it at all.

Just accept it and it stops being a problem.

katewhinesalot · 19/08/2019 09:32

Next doors boiler sometimes emitted long continuous hums. It stopped when it was replaced.

Grambler · 19/08/2019 09:46

How far are you from a train line? I'm thinking especially heavy nuclear waste goods train?

Usually though these "there's a noise in my house" threads end up being a smoke/CO2 alarm running out of battery in the loft/boarded up wall.

RottnestFerry · 19/08/2019 10:16

Another one I read about was a neighbour's new aquarium pump.

That was humming 24 hours a day though.

IsobelRae23 · 19/08/2019 10:22

I’ve never heard of the ‘hum’ before. That was an interesting read- thank you.

CacenCrunch · 19/08/2019 10:41

Do you have a sky box? They turn themselves off at 2am then back on again at 5am if they are in eco mode to cool down and reset if necessary. I know this as I had a new SkyQ box yesterday, and it hadn't been doing this and had fried the hard drive

CacenCrunch · 19/08/2019 10:42

Or do you have an plug in alarm clock? I'm sure mine makes a very quiet hum when it's set for the next day

Rubydread · 19/08/2019 11:01

Did everyone miss the part where I said I've tried turning the electrics off?
