Me or my neighbour?

Had an argument with my neighbour this afternoon about my music. She came over to complain about my music, I had the iPad on whilst cleaning my kitchen. I said I was sorry, I would turn it down (it's not that loud, just an iPad).

She then said, is not the loudness of the music, it's the actual music she doesn't like. As in, I could have it as loud as I like, as long as she likes the song.
I told her she couldn't dictate to me what kind of music I listened to, even if it wasn't to her taste.

She thinks I'm being a bitch, but I think she's being a cock.

Who is unreasonable?

As if she can dictate what music you listen to! Confused

Thankgoodness1 · 15/08/2019 21:48

Were you listening to music with a lot of expletives

madeofstarlight · 15/08/2019 21:48

She's obviously BU. Out of interest (nosiness) what were you listening to? Grin

Summerunderway · 15/08/2019 21:48

What were you playing op ? Unfair to ask opinions on such limited info!

Bookworm4 · 15/08/2019 21:50

I did once have a neighbour when I lived in a flat play Elvis on repeat 🙄

MonstranceClock · 15/08/2019 21:51

But surely it shouldn't matter what I was listening to? Nothing with swear words in.

TixieLix · 15/08/2019 21:52

We need to know what you were playing OP. Did she offer up any alternative suggestions?

MadeForThis · 15/08/2019 21:54

Need to know what it was

Rationally, the neighbour of course has no right to dictate what you were listening to.
But every fibre of my being says that some music just needs shutting down...

DaphneFanshaw · 15/08/2019 21:56

Of course it doesn't matter what you were listening to, she is very unreasonable.
We still need to know what you were listening to though.

MonstranceClock · 15/08/2019 21:56

I don't see why it matters, but I was listening to heavy metal. She listens to Jazz which i can't stand but I've never asked her to turn it off or down.

OP posts:
LordEmsworth · 15/08/2019 21:57

She wouldn't have known what music it was, if you had been playing it at a reasonable volume. If you are playing your music loudly enough that your neighbour can hear it, then you are being unreasonable regardless of what the music is. Just turn the bloody thing down and have some consideration for others.

teachermam · 15/08/2019 21:59

Earphones but she was being a bit unreasonable

JoJoSM2 · 15/08/2019 22:01

A lot of people won't find heavy ,metal palatable.

However, how was she able to hear it? We're your windows wide open?

Zillie77 · 15/08/2019 22:05

No offense, but I can see your neighbor’s perspective. To those of us who don’t like Heavy Metal, it can sound utterly cacophonous.

SeriouslyEnoughAlreadyRantOver · 15/08/2019 22:10

Your music must be ridiculously loud for your neighbour to hear it, so on that basis only, YABU

DH can't hear the music from the kitchen from our bedroom or his study, and we live in the same house! How loud must you be for the neighbour to be inconvenienced?!

Deathgrip · 15/08/2019 22:12

YABVU trying to get away with describing heavy metal as ‘music’... Grin

StCharlotte · 15/08/2019 22:16

It is the law that those who play music loud enough for the neighbours to hear must always play utterly shite "music". Or so it seems. It's never a nice bit of ABBA is it?

YABU.

Wheninfrome · 15/08/2019 22:18

YABU for playing heavy metal shit.
Your neighbour sounds awesome with the Jazz vibe - my kind of next door dudes!

AnastasiaVonBeaverhausen · 15/08/2019 22:19

It's never a nice bit of ABBA is it?

Oxymoron right there.

Malvinaa81 · 15/08/2019 22:22

Until the type of music was revealed the neighbour was BU, but now that we know, I can see their point- and it must have been very loud.

Mamagin · 15/08/2019 22:25

Use earphones. I like a bit of heavy metal, but not filtered through a wall.
