To buy alcohol this morning

Mystarisup · 14/08/2019 07:40

I'm meeting a friend for coffee at her house at 10am today.

I planned on stoping at Tesco at 9.30am to buy a bottle of her favourite gin for her (belated gift) but DH said that NO shops are allowed to sell booze before lunchtime, is this true?!

I've Googled and can't find a definitive answer! Can anyone enlighten me?

In Scotland, no alcohol sales before 10am. Not sure on rest of UK!

PooWillyBumBum · 14/08/2019 07:41

I’ve bought booze before lunch for gifts. Bought fizz at 8am 8n Waitrose last week. He’s talking bollocks.

ScreamingValenta · 14/08/2019 07:42

Fairly sure that's not true in England.

Spinnaret · 14/08/2019 07:43

The 10am rule is only on Sundays. Because you should be at church on Sunday mornings. Hmm

Lemoneeza · 14/08/2019 07:43

It's 8am in England last time I checked. Probably about ten years ago!

Newmumma83 · 14/08/2019 07:44

I have brought wine for a casserole I was making at 8am before I am sure of it x

dmango · 14/08/2019 07:44

Not in smaller shops like Tesco Express but you can in large supermarkets

finnmcool · 14/08/2019 07:44

My local tesco express sells alcohol from when they open at 7.30am.

IDontLikeZombies · 14/08/2019 07:44

Certainly, in Scotland this is true. Off licences don't open before 10 or 11am and the alcohol aisles in supermarkets are roped off. There's a big drive to reduce the harm caused by drink here so its really strongly enforced, it might be different in other parts of the UK.

Lemoneeza · 14/08/2019 07:44

That might just be co op policy not law though maybe

GruciusMalfoy · 14/08/2019 07:45

In Scotland it's 10am. I always feel judged when buying it that early, ha!

finnmcool · 14/08/2019 07:45

Excellent cross post dmangoGrin

TheTrollFairy · 14/08/2019 07:47

Just try, they will either sell it to you or they won’t 🤷‍♀️

TheTrollFairy · 14/08/2019 07:47

Then come and report back to us

Mystarisup · 14/08/2019 07:47

I feel less panicked, I'm in England! Thanks everyone. Will I get judged for buying spirits so early do you think?! I might need to add a mini shop so it's not the ONLY item! Blush

Grucius, I know! "Its for rissotto" really doesn't wash as you scuttle past the lady unsnapping the barrier Grin

ScreamingValenta · 14/08/2019 07:51

Doubt you will be judged for (presumably) reasonably upmarket gin. You could always buy a gift bag alongside it! Grin

GruciusMalfoy · 14/08/2019 07:55

Lol, I'm sure you won't be judged. It's not like you're champing at the bit to buy a 3L bottle of White Lightning. (Neither do I!)

stucknoue · 14/08/2019 07:55

You can buy it at 8am for sure, I pick up supplies for work on my way regularly from Aldi

stucknoue · 14/08/2019 07:56

I often buy 6 bottles of port and 12+ bottles of wine, they don't judge!

Auramigraine · 14/08/2019 07:57

My partner works in retail management and says you can buy it in a morning x

IDontLikeZombies · 14/08/2019 07:58

Cross posts, OP.
Queing at the barrier is frowned upon but if its on sale from early on you won't have that.

IAskTooManyQuestions · 14/08/2019 07:58

Is google broke this morning ?

The act states that alcohol can only be sold between 10am and 10pm in Scotland, and in some cases this is reduced still further, especially on a Sunday. Unfortunately, the rest of the UK is dependent on the licensing legislation in each local authority and on the varying opening times of the stores

Depeneds what your council says OP

KUGA · 14/08/2019 07:59

I wouldn't let what other people may think bother me.
If it`s just gin you need to buy why spend anymore.
If it makes you feel better buy a drinks bag with it.

MyFokMarelize · 14/08/2019 08:00

I had to do exactly this a couple of weeks ago. I just looked at the guy serving me and said "Breakfast" Grin Grin

I'm sure he couldn't have cared less btw.
