To buy alcohol this morning

I'm meeting a friend for coffee at her house at 10am today.

I planned on stoping at Tesco at 9.30am to buy a bottle of her favourite gin for her (belated gift) but DH said that NO shops are allowed to sell booze before lunchtime, is this true?!

I've Googled and can't find a definitive answer! Can anyone enlighten me?

I’ve done my Xmas shopping at weird times before last year was 6am on Xmas eve definitely plenty of booze purchased no issue at all

Bobbie3 · 14/08/2019 08:03

Yup. Cannot buy alcohol at all in Dubai.

Ponoka7 · 14/08/2019 08:04

When you can sell alcohol depends on the license you have been granted.

Which is why a tesco express, surrounded by houses, will have a restricted licence, but the 24 hour one won't.

A bottle of Frosty Jack/diamond white , might get a raised eyebrow, but a bottle of anything else, won't.

Biancadelrioisback · 14/08/2019 08:08

Don't do a mini shop along with the gin.
Buy a selection of random bits and bobs such as cucumber and condoms, you'll make the cashier's day Wink

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 14/08/2019 08:08

Ive definitely bought booze in the morning before Grin

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 14/08/2019 08:18

Will I get judged for buying spirits so early do you think?!

I can assure you the shop staff won't give a shit.

...Not unless you plan on rolling in there with a boot hanging off your foot, your clothes on inside out and your mascara smeared down your face, before telling everyone present you love them .

It’s 10 o’clock in Scotland. And it’s stuck to as far as I can tell. There’s even a cordon on the bevvy aisle in Tesco until 10.00.

Mystarisup · 14/08/2019 08:24

I feel better. Phew.

I will report back!

I bought alcohol from Sainsbury's at 9am the other week for a bbq and had no bother.

HemlockStarglimmer · 14/08/2019 08:36

I live in Scotland and rarely drink alcohol but could not resist buying a bottle of beer at 8:30 while on holiday in England a few weeks ago, just because I could.

A few years ago I bought a bottle of whisky for a gift from a big Tesco quite early in the morning. No one batted an eyelid.

dustarr73 · 14/08/2019 08:36

Its 10.30 here in Ireland.Years ago before they brought in the 10.30 law,you could buy it in the morning. And i used to work on checkouts, and you could time your watch by certain people buying alcohol.

There used to be a fella dressed like he worked on a building site, and he used to buy 2 cans, every hour and hide it in his hard hat.

VenusTiger · 14/08/2019 08:47

Buy a bottle bag with it

wonkylegs · 14/08/2019 08:50

I do my weekly shop between 8.45 & 9.30 every Monday and often buy alcohol at this time
It might raise an eyebrow if you we're buying it and then swigging from the bottle as you walked out the store but just buying it and putting it in your bag wouldn't even be on most people's radar

Saladd0dger · 14/08/2019 08:54

Tesco superstore where I worked 6am till 11pm alcohol could be bought and 10-4 Sunday

BillieEilish · 14/08/2019 08:56

So people working night shifts shouldn't buy alcohol in the morning?Grin

Just go for it OP, in this day and age people have different schedules and nobody gives a damn at the checkout.

I often, often buy my alcohol in the morning. It's when I do my shopping.

SouthernComforts · 14/08/2019 08:57

Why are you worried about a strangers opinion of your shopping? Confused

FWIW, when I worked in a shop it was very obvious who was buying their morning alcohol to give as a gift to their friend at brunch, and who was heading to swill it in the park, so you're probably ok.

tabulahrasa · 14/08/2019 09:01

“It’s 10 o’clock in Scotland. And it’s stuck to as far as I can tell. There’s even a cordon on the bevvy aisle in Tesco until 10.00.”

They do a countdown before 10pm as well, because at exactly 10 they won’t put it through... so you get announcements for about 10 minutes beforehand saying if your purchases contain alcohol maud your way to the checkout now...

sashh · 14/08/2019 09:02

It's no longer true, I remember having to stand in a supermarket once watching the clock with the check out assistant because is was 'too early'.

Fatted · 14/08/2019 09:05

I've bought booze first thing in the morning loads of times before now. Never thought anything of it. Just because I'm buying it then doesn't mean I'm drinking it then!!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 14/08/2019 09:10

Because you should be at church on Sunday mornings.

Necking communion wine.

starlightmagic · 14/08/2019 09:13

It depends on the retailers licence, we can sell alcohol from 6am even on Sundays. Other stores are licensed differently.

ReanimatedSGB · 14/08/2019 09:32

I've bought alcohol early in the morning if, for instance, I'm going to want it for lunchtime/the evening, and it would be a nuisance to have to make two separate shopping trips. Never had so much as a funny look.

OneHanded · 14/08/2019 09:33

Always grab a bottle of almonde baileys pre 9am if I pop down for milk

MrsKittyFane1 · 14/08/2019 09:34

It really does depend on the type of shop. Local CoOP (small) sells alcohol from opening time (7am) everyday of week including Sunday.
