To think that TUI are shit.

Booked a family holiday last year on August. We are due to fly in 11 days.

When we booked we chose the holiday based on being able to fly from our local airport, 30 mins from home.

We received an email late last year saying all flights to the destination we chose has been cancelled from our local area. The nearest airport we can fly from is 1.5 to 2 hours away. We agreed as we really want to go on the holiday, even though it was annoying. Booked on a flight at 3.05 pm.

Just checking details with the airport and we can't find the flight. So we checked with TUI. The flight is now at 6am. We were sent an email originally saying that the flights had been changed, from the main TUI email address. For this second change we were told that we had been emailed about it.

We searched our junk folder and Lo and behold an email from a random email address, with no warning in the heading that our flights had changed again. No apologies for the fact it wasn't clear that the flight had changed or that it had come from a totally different email address from every other email we had been sent. In fact the woman in the branch was so off hand that it has put us off using TUI ever again.

AIBU to feel that the number of changes is unreasonable and that that attitude of the staff sucks?

Yep. In my experience they are very happy when they have your money and then their after sales care is crap.

We went on our honeymoon 3 years ago and it was booked with TUI. We enjoyed the holiday itself, but our flight home was delayed by 23.5 hours. They put us up overnight in a swingers hotel which had strippers and pole dancers as entertainment, the weirdest bedroom set up I've ever seen - made for adult get togethers withother guests I'm guessing- and porn all over the tv as soon as you switched it on.

When we got home I found out my grandma had passed away 3 days in to our honeymoon. I was very close with her and nearly missed her funeral due to the delay.

Initially the delay was a technical error with the plane (fine, appreciate not flying) but then they forgot to load the plane with catering so that pushed it further back.

When I complained to TUI and asked for the compensation I was due under EU law, it got nowhere. I think I waited about 9 months before filing with a no win no fee company. They got us £1200 in compensation so we got about £800 back.

But after that, I've booked with Thomas Cook and smaller independent travel agents instead. Somebody at TUI made the mistake of ringing me trting to sell me a holiday when all this was going on.

Wingingthiswholething · 05/08/2019 14:06

Oh sorry I've just done the math - 27 hour delay.

araiwa · 05/08/2019 14:08

I like tui beer

TheFairyCaravan · 05/08/2019 14:09

TUI have had a lot of their fleet grounded because of the problems with the 737 max. That's why they're shifting flights around.

We've just booked to go away with them in September because they're the only airline I've found who have extra legroom seats in the middle of the plane so I, as a disabled person, can sit there. They, also, give extra weight for free for my medications etc.

The last time we flew with Thomas Cook it was bloody awful.

Elliebellbell · 05/08/2019 14:10

Never used them but several friends have had terrible experience with them.

I always use Jet2 and (touch wood) have been very happy.

LIZS · 05/08/2019 14:18

Check your terms and conditions but it may be that a change of 8+ hours so close requires notice and/or compensation. They may argue you get more time in resort. Is it the same flight or have they merged 2 flights? Has the return flight also changed?

Namingetiquette · 05/08/2019 14:35

I could be completely wrong but I think it also depends on your destination. I don't think the service was ever horrible, but TUI offered us far more excursion opportunities than Thomas Cook. We were delayed on TUI and missed nearly a whole day of our 5 day holiday. The food at the hotel restaurant was much better from TUI. Thomas Cook was cheaper. It kind of depends on what you're going for.

DM had a dreadful experience with Tui, and they could not have cared less when she complained. She found a group on Facebook full of dissatisfied Tui customers, some of whom have had some seriously scary and dangerous experiences and Tui haven’t given two shiny shits. I’ll never, ever book with them.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 05/08/2019 14:44

Oh God I've just booked a package with them for next year :o(

Hmmmmminteresting · 05/08/2019 14:48

We went to majorca with Tui last month. It was our first holiday abroad with our 3 and 1 year olds so we specifically paid more for good , afternoon flights.
3 weeks before we were due to fly I got an email saying we were due to fly on one of the grounded fleet so we were now going to be on a Olympus plane but it stated in bold "YOUR FLIGHT TIMES AND NUMBERS REMAIN THE SAME".
Only when I logged in 2 days before the flight did i notice that both journeys were now night flights! I was furious and called them and they were adamant a separate email had been sent but i checked everywhere and never got one. It really stressed us out and wasnt not fun travelling at all!
I hope you have a good holiday but yes I agree, unacceptable.

Star801 · 05/08/2019 14:49

TUI changed our hotel about 3 times last time we used them. The holiday was ok in the end but only because I picked another hotel myself and paid extra.
Jet2 are really good.

CocoLoco87 · 05/08/2019 15:04

We've always gone AI with Thomson/Tui and it's been great every time. They mucked up our transfer this time but more than compensated for it. I thought the rep that dealt with us was fantastic and she wasn't even with our hotel!

cjt110 · 05/08/2019 15:24

I would never book with TUI or Thomas Cook. Both a pile of shit in my opinion.

Jet2 all the way.

juneybean · 05/08/2019 15:42

Ergh well this makes me nervous for our holiday in September, it's our first time booking with TUI!

gotmychocolateimgood · 05/08/2019 15:48

Tui changed our hotel once but to a much nicer hotel that we never could have afforded ourselves, for no extra cost. Luckily flights were unaffected. I was very happy with that!

The adverts with one happy family playing in a massive pool all to themselves, or a deserted beach etc piss me off though. The pools and beaches I've been to on Tui hols are always rammed!

No other complaints though, reps were generally young but keen and great with the kids.

TSSDNCOP · 05/08/2019 15:51

Yep

Jet2 are the way to go!

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 05/08/2019 17:11

Jet2 don't go to where I've booked for next year (Cape Verde) so had very little choice unfortunately.

NoBaggyPants · 05/08/2019 17:22

Tui are fine. Flight changes are annoying but you can't blame them for your failure to check your spam folder. So many emails go there erroneously that you should be checking it regularly.

Ohbehave1 · 05/08/2019 17:32

@NoBaggyPants. I do check my spam folder. But no other email from them has gone there and no other email from them came from that email address.

There should be continuity from them especially when moving the flight 9 hours earlier which could have been disastrous

OP posts:
Waxonwaxoff0 · 05/08/2019 17:33

I use them regularly and like them, but then I've never had any issues with flight times changing or anything so I don't know what they're like with complaints.

Jet2 are my favourite for package holidays but they don't do long haul.

dementedpixie · 05/08/2019 18:01

We've been fine with Tui but had a bad experience with Thomas Cook

kerkyra · 05/08/2019 18:02

Never had a problem with Tui

WickedGoodDoge · 05/08/2019 18:09

We’ve never done a package with them, but once flew to Orlando with them as they were less expensive than BA etc and my PILs wanted the cheapest flights possible. They were OK, but their staff at Sanford were pretty unpleasant and I wouldn’t fly with them again.

Had a worse experience lately with Virgin Holidays when they changed the details of our transfer from the airport in St Lucia to our hotel (90 minute drive) and didn’t bother to tell us. We were left stranded at the airport as a result - Virgin cheerfully agree that they didn’t tell us about the change but see nothing wrong with that. Hmm

This is why I usually do my own bookings independently and not through a package! At least if something goes wrong then I only have myself to blame! Grin

Hate TUI

Booked big holiday over a year in advance for 12 of us, 3 weeks before changed our hotel to an utterly rubbish one. After a huge battle managed to get changed to a decent one, but was so so so stressful.
