To keep a £10 note found on the pavement?

Tootytata · 08/07/2019 21:27

So my husband found a £10 on the pavement on his way to pick up our son from school today. He said he saw the £10 note on the ground but nobody else was around so he didn't see anyone drop it.

He was really happy about it but I kept thinking what if the person who dropped it really needed it to feed their family or something? We're by no means rich but don't have to worry about paying bills or buying food etc.

Realistically there wasn't much he could've done if he didn't see the person who dropped it. If you saw a £10 on the ground, would you pick it up and keep it? (And spend it?) Would you feel bad about it?

I don’t think there’s anything you can do if you find a note like that. I’d keep it.

Lazypuppy · 08/07/2019 21:29

In those circumstances i'd keep it and spend it.

Unshriven · 08/07/2019 21:29

What else would you do with it!?

Of course I'd keep it/spend it.

Guavaf1sh · 08/07/2019 21:29

Keep it. Obviously

happyhillock · 08/07/2019 21:30

No, i found £20 on the way to work one morning i kept it, how do you know who it belonged to?

BentBaastard · 08/07/2019 21:30

Definitely keep it

cookiechomper · 08/07/2019 21:30

Pick it up and spend it. If I didn't, Someone else would.

ilovewinterpansies · 08/07/2019 21:31

If you feel guilty then give it to the nearest charity shop/charity collection box.

MrsAJ27 · 08/07/2019 21:31

Definitely keep it...what else could you do?

SylviaAndSidney · 08/07/2019 21:32

I'd wait for an hour until someone came looking for it, then either take it to the police station or put it in a charity box, I'd feeI wicked spending it!

I jest, I'd pocket it if no-one appeared to be looking for it.

Smileyaxolotl1 · 08/07/2019 21:33

I feel your pain op. You can hand it in at a police station/the school in this case and then claim it in a week or so if no one does.
When I was about 8 (I am 40 now) I found a cool pen in the street on holiday - it was clearly a souvenir of the place we were visiting. I still worry that a little child had bought it as a souvenir or present and was devastated to get home and find they had lost it.

Contraceptionismyfriend · 08/07/2019 21:33

@SylviaAndSidney Grin you had me then

CloserIAm2Fine · 08/07/2019 21:33

If the person really did need it there’s still no way of knowing who they are. So YANBU to keep it.

I’ve found £10 on the floor twice, no sign of who drppped it either time. Once I put it in a charity box (then realised I had dropped it in the first place, doh! I just took it as a lesson to be more careful!) and once I gave it to a nearby homeless person.

I always feel like someone is going to pop out with a hidden camera or something in those situations so wouldn’t keep it myself, I would always give it away. But I wouldn’t judge someone who did unless there was some dishonesty involved.

Hahaha88 · 08/07/2019 21:33

I'd keep it but in the past when this happened to me I gave some of it to charity. If I was more comfortable financially I'd probably give it all to charity. Though I believe you're supposed to hand it in to the police and then when (unsurprisingly) no one claims it you get it back.

BarryTheKestrel · 08/07/2019 21:33

Pick it up and keep it. Larger amounts (ie more than a single note) take to local police station. If conscience/moral code/your needs states, donate the found money to charity.

QueenoftheBiscuitTin · 08/07/2019 21:33

Keep it

nobreakfastforme · 08/07/2019 21:34

There's no way of getting it back to the owner now is there.
I'd give it to charity but I have the luxury of not needing an extra tenner.
It's up to your DH what he does with it I suppose and if he wants to spend it, there's not much you can say about it.

Hahaha88 · 08/07/2019 21:34

@CloserIAm2Fine I'm a lol at you donating your own dropped and found tenner!!

NailsNeedDoing · 08/07/2019 21:38

I'd give it to charity, it would feel icky spending it when I'm lucky enough to not need to.

Hanab · 08/07/2019 21:39

I am pretty sure it’s illegal .. esp if there are cameras around .. did a lady not get prosecuted for something like this a few years ago??
But hey ho it’s up to whoever/whomever picks it up as to what to do about/with it 🤷🏻‍♀️

StripeySocks29 · 08/07/2019 21:40

If somebody needed it urgently to feed their family or whatever then they’d take better care not to lose it in the first place surely?

In this situation I think you can keep it without any moral dilemma.

2toe · 08/07/2019 21:40

As I don’t need it I would leave it, the person who dropped it may come back searching desperately because they did need it or maybe the next person who comes along is far more in need of it than I am.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 08/07/2019 21:40

Police aren’t interested in lost property in most areas.

Hanab · 08/07/2019 21:40

I meant if someone comes looking for it and they use cameras to look for it 🙈

Livebythecoast · 08/07/2019 21:49

Awful for the person who dropped it so if there was no way of knowing who did then I'd put it in a charity box and ease my conscience
