To keep a £10 note found on the pavement?

Tootytata · 08/07/2019 21:27

So my husband found a £10 on the pavement on his way to pick up our son from school today. He said he saw the £10 note on the ground but nobody else was around so he didn't see anyone drop it.

He was really happy about it but I kept thinking what if the person who dropped it really needed it to feed their family or something? We're by no means rich but don't have to worry about paying bills or buying food etc.

Realistically there wasn't much he could've done if he didn't see the person who dropped it. If you saw a £10 on the ground, would you pick it up and keep it? (And spend it?) Would you feel bad about it?

No such thing as a police station in our 12000 resident town, don't think I would be driving half an hour to the nearest one.

skybluee · 08/07/2019 21:53

I would burn it. I'd feel too guilty to spend it :(

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 08/07/2019 21:58

The few times I've found money.
I've just gave it to charity.
However that said. I can't hand on heart say
"if I was desperate I wouldn't keep it."
Therefore I don't blame people who do. " If you've got 3 kids and £5 to last you for a week and you look down and find a £50 note staring up at you, what are you going to do? Keep it, of.course you are. Its only human nature and survival.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 08/07/2019 22:00

You'd burn it, Sky.
I think the owner would rather someone spoilt themselves with it than burnt it.

Passthecake30 · 08/07/2019 22:04

I'd probably keep it, and get everyone a treat.

HopelessLayout · 08/07/2019 22:07

You can hand it in at a police station/the school in this case and then claim it in a week or so if no one does.

In theory… My friend did that and had to return to the police station several times, fill out endless forms etc. It was a complete hassle and waste of her time.

Bellatrix14 · 08/07/2019 22:10

If it was just in the street I would keep it and spend it, but if I found it on the floor in a shop I would hand it in as it’s far more likely someone will claim it. If you find it on the street there’s not really anywhere to hand it in to! I guess if I was feeling very noble I might give it to charity...

When my sister was about 9 she lost £20 of birthday money when it fell out of her pocket in a shop. We knew it had fallen out in that shop but it wasn’t on the floor and nobody handed it in Angry

Teacakeandalatte · 08/07/2019 22:10

A clear case of finders keepers, losers weepers.

nauseous5000 · 08/07/2019 22:11

I found one- similar circumstances- gave it to charity. Next week I sound a fiver and did the same. Following week I found a £2 coin. Somebody wants me to be rich but conscience won't let me!

Pinkyyy · 08/07/2019 22:12

What a stupid thing to say. Give it away if you like but burn it? FFS. The rubbish people come out with on here.

SparklyLeprechaun · 08/07/2019 22:13

Does anyone ever actually go to the police station if they lose £10? Ever?
Keep it, spend it, give it to charity, whatever. The owner isn't going to get it back anyway.

bbpp · 08/07/2019 22:16

I found some money outside a supermarket and handed it in, came back after the grace period or whatever and no sign of it in the lost and found books (even though we watched them fill it out). Clearly took it for themselves so I'm not so inclined to do that anymore.

When I was younger I've found money and kept it for myself. I found £15 a few months ago and gave it to a homeless guy a few nights later who was in the cold and dark trying to add up change.

MysweetAudrina · 08/07/2019 22:18

The burning comment was probably a joke !!!!

Nowadays I would give it to the next homeless person I saw but back when i was a skint single mother of 18 and i found £100 on the street i didn't think twice about keeping it. I can still remember the piece of steak I bought. I fairness I thought it was £20 or £40 as it was rolled and I didn't check until I got back to my bedsit.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 08/07/2019 22:19

Keep it. I found £10 a few weeks ago, and spent half of it on cakes for the office, then gave £5 to a homeless guy I often pass on my way home.

Tootytata · 08/07/2019 22:19

bbpp - that's awful! So the staff member stole the money?!

If it was me who found it, I'd probably give it to charity. I think my husband is going to buy some beers with the £10 note he found Hmm

Mysweetaudrina - does "mother of 18" mean you have 18 children Shock or you were 18 years old?!

It’s impossible to know who dropped it without seeing. Finders keepers. If it was in a shop or someone’s house then fair enough, hand it in. But other wise keep it 😊

bbpp · 08/07/2019 22:25

Yep! Was quite a lot too, £100+ Angry I remember thinking it was probably someone's state pension because of how it was packaged iygwim

MysweetAudrina · 08/07/2019 22:28

Pml at 18 children. My fanny just shrivelled reading that comment. Can you imagine being a sm to 18 children lol.

Halo1234 · 08/07/2019 22:28

If u need it take it. Chances of it getting back to its owner are slim. If u dont need it either do something good with it (charity or homeless person) or leave it where it is and let the next person to come along decide or maybe the person who dropped it will retrace their steps and find it. I would have just left it.

DogHasEatenTheSqueaker · 08/07/2019 22:38

Burn a tenner? Melt it, surely

TeacupDrama · 08/07/2019 22:38

if someone drops a wallet there is a point in handing it in as often a card or something shows who the owner is
There was something about a survey a few weeks ago that if a wallet contained a £100 it was more likely to be handed in than a wallet/purse with just a fiver or so I think the balance point which those surveyed would hand in was about £25-30 that people would feel bad about keeping a larger sum of money
no-one can ever identify who dropped a fiver on the pavement unless you saw it fall from a pocket as they reached for phone or something

VladmirsPoutine · 08/07/2019 22:41

Can't believe there are people who'd get themselves so worked up over a tenner found in the street! Wow. I must be a psychopath as I'd have picked it up and probably bought something for dinner on my way back or just put it in my wallet for whenever I needed it. Confused But this is MN after all

mollpop · 08/07/2019 22:42

I'd keep it

DickZillaofTheVilla · 08/07/2019 22:44

Do people genuinely ‘hand in’ £10 they find on the street or feel guilty spending it? Really? Hmm
