To ask if you are Muslim where you holiday?

cardamoncoffee · 08/07/2019 18:42

Salaam!
Name changed and this is a genuine ask. I am desperate for a holiday but due to several bad experiences I am very wary to book anywhere in Europe in summer because of hijab/burkini. In my head I feel we would stand out a mile in a hotel in Costa del Sol or other such place. I don't mind for myself but don't want my daughter to feel unwelcome if that makes sense. Would also love to try somewhere like Eurocamp but the pool rules rules us out.

Just wanting any recommendations in UK or abroad where you have felt comfortable.

Not Muslim myself, but FIL is. He, step-MIL and kids go to Thailand. Bit further away than Europe obviously! But they've never had any issues.

Hoppinggreen · 08/07/2019 18:47

We aren’t Muslim but a lot of DD’s friends are
They seem to go to Dubai, Mauritius or visit family in India or Pakistan. They are all quite wealthy though
I’m not going to patronise you by saying it’s fine to holiday anywhere in hijab or burkini because I’ve never worn either so I have no idea what people’s reaction would be. I imagine that there are some parts of Southern Spain where it might cause a reaction going from things I’ve seen
Good luck finding somewhere x

notmylittleangel · 08/07/2019 18:49

Lots of burkinis in Tunisia but this was pre hotel attack.
Turkey, Egypt ? Surely You look at largely 'Muslim' countries

heath48 · 08/07/2019 18:50

Dubai.

PoppingOneOutIn2020 · 08/07/2019 18:50

I genuinely cannot believe I'm reading this, in this day and age. How horrendous. You and your family should feel confident holidaying wherever you want! You should miss out on parts of the world because of the small minded opinions of others.

I hope you find and have a fantastic holiday, no matter where you are Flowers

zafferana · 08/07/2019 18:50

Our Muslim friends usually go to Turkey for their summer holiday. They also visit friends and family in Canada, Pakistan, Iraq (yes, apparently parts of Iraq are reasonably safe these days!), or the ME.

Mumski45 · 08/07/2019 18:52

My Dh and DS's are muslim. We go to Turkey regularly as the food is mainly halal and we can all eat without worrying. I am not muslim so don't wear a burkini but I don't think you would have any problems there.

Teddybear45 · 08/07/2019 18:52

Southern Spain is fine if you wear a hijab / burkini but don’t cover your face. Most of my Muslim friends, however, prefer North Africa / Turkey / Middle East because you can find women only pools there and so don’t need to burkinis - but my friends hate them!

fraxion · 08/07/2019 18:53

I'm not Muslim but have seen plenty of ladies wearing a burkini in Thailand, Sri Lanka and the Emirates. Good luck Flowers.

PooWillyBumBum · 08/07/2019 18:53

I’m not Muslim so have no experience of this but my father is Algerian and it’s a beautiful country to visit with gorgeous food and beaches and lots of people wear all their clothes and headscarves on the beach as it’s Muslim. There are people in bikinis too though! Assume the other North African countries are similar but I’d avoid a Tui type package break which will be full of brits and look at getting an apartment and going to regular beaches, or going to a nice hotel.

CarolDanvers · 08/07/2019 18:55

My Muslim friend goes to Thailand, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and back to see family in a Pakistan.

NailsNeedDoing · 08/07/2019 18:56

I agree with a PP that it's outrageous that you are made to feel this way. Angry

I'm not Muslim, but I've seen many families that wear the hijab or Burkinis at various Red Sea Resorts in Egypt, and it's not much further to fly than Europe. I hope you find something wonderful.

underneaththeash · 08/07/2019 18:56

There's always a few people in burkinis at the pool at CP in Wooburn (I assume they're also in other bits of CP, but I don't notice).

IrmaFayLear · 08/07/2019 18:57

We went to a very posh holiday resort in Morocco. It was very bargainous as it was Ramadan and the casino and disco were closed. Also they said they would not be serving alcohol to Muslims. Dh was distraught (not about the disco or casino!) but because he thought he'd have to go all holiday without a beer. Funnily enough they were fine with serving us wine and beer!

I've just remember it was called the Magazan, near Rabat. It really was excellent and the staff were lovely.

WellTidy · 08/07/2019 18:57

I’m not Muslim but my Muslim friends often go to Morocco.

Lottie2shoes · 08/07/2019 19:02

Its lovely to see a message like this after seeing most messages that are very anti muslim in this day and age. Very heartening especially with the advice given

haflump · 08/07/2019 19:03

Hi OP, I’ve also had some bad experiences growing up holidaying wearing hijab around pools etc so am now wary and don’t book ‘beachy / resort’ type holidays. Instead we do city breaks where a lot of it is walking and sight seeing and it’s perfect. I’ve found this is much better and although I’ve gotten some stares, it’s been absolutely fine. Have recently been to Rome and Iceland this year which were both lovely and i would recommend. Have previously visited Sri Lanka (amazing!!), Dubai, Oman, Morocco (although wouldn’t go anywhere in it except Agadir) and those places are far more suited to beachy type holidays.

Although when I was a kid, my sister was wearing a one piece swimming costume (age about 5) with leggings on top in Burj al Arab hotel swimming pool and some English woman was swearing and shouting at my parents for “making her cover up”. My dad had a right go at herGrin but point is, don’t even know if the Muslim countries are worth it for wearing burkinis etc. Hmm

Have a fab holiday regardless!

Lottie2shoes · 08/07/2019 19:03

@PoppingOneOutIn2020 was meant to be for

shockthemonkey · 08/07/2019 19:05

Turkey!

fortifiedwithtea · 08/07/2019 19:07

Not muslim but we spent a fab week in The Royal Taj Mahal Hotel in Side, Turkey where we met a lovely muslim family . All the ladies in full head to toe swim wear with hijab. They were were so much fun to be with I wish we had asked to keep in touch.

jojo2305 · 08/07/2019 19:07

Hi OP, many hotels in Turkey now advertise that they are halal/islamic friendly- it's big business! They are very popular with my friends and some are much cheaper than a break in the UK. You'll find exactly what you are looking for there, I think there is even a website called something like halal booking.com that specialises where you can get an idea of options Smile

NinjaInFluffyPJs · 08/07/2019 19:07

Gulf of Aqaba is lovely and you can even enjoy a trip to Petra

Sosayi · 08/07/2019 19:07

Dubai Turkey Morocco
I’m not Muslim but have been to these countries many times
Many of my Muslim friends holiday in these places

happychange · 08/07/2019 19:08

You can try this website
Havehalalwilltravel

Malaysia is great for Muslims! And pool too

StCharlotte · 08/07/2019 19:08

I'm not Muslim but at our hotel in Lake Bled (Slovenia), there was a large family group in full burka etc. The hotel said they go every year so it must be fine (and it's a beautiful place). Hope you have a wonderful time wherever you go Smile
