To ask if you are Muslim where you holiday?

cardamoncoffee · 08/07/2019 18:42

Salaam!
Name changed and this is a genuine ask. I am desperate for a holiday but due to several bad experiences I am very wary to book anywhere in Europe in summer because of hijab/burkini. In my head I feel we would stand out a mile in a hotel in Costa del Sol or other such place. I don't mind for myself but don't want my daughter to feel unwelcome if that makes sense. Would also love to try somewhere like Eurocamp but the pool rules rules us out.

Just wanting any recommendations in UK or abroad where you have felt comfortable.

Bournemouth has very multicultral visitors as so close to london. A muslim friend likes going there

Oman is a brill holiday destination and not always ££, aforementioned mauritius is lovely but pricey.

Greece? (Sanotrini?)

bluebeck · 08/07/2019 19:55

My Muslim colleague goes to northern Cyprus on holiday with her family and she wears a Burkini - Kyrenia is the resort. I think they book it through the "usual" types of online agencies.

It's awful you have to think of these things, I totally understand why you want to protect your DC from such bigoted reactions Sad

MaryPopppins · 08/07/2019 19:56

Alternately. What about an Air BnB place with your own pool? Xxx

TanMateix · 08/07/2019 19:58

Turkey, but stay away of Magaluf style British/Russian resorts. I love the Lycian coast but avoid Olu Deniz like the plague.

It is not expensive either, as you can easily rent a house for 4-5 in a nice area for £100-150 a week, so if you start looking early on you can get flights and rent a car very cheaply. Best time to go is May & October, when the water is quite warm but it is not scorching hot while you walk around.

I can’t believe I’m reading this in 2019. I’m so sorry. Where ever you end up I hope it’s a fabulous holiday.

Have to ask though, what are these rules about French pools? I may not be Muslim but I am pasty and fat so prefer to cover up.

DreamingofSunshine · 08/07/2019 20:03

I went to Aqaba in Jordan and I was in a minority not in a burkini.

shitpark · 08/07/2019 20:05

I have muslim friends who are going to Mauritius this year, they have previously been to Egypt, Turkey, and rented a holiday cottage in Cornwall.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 08/07/2019 20:06

Malaysia. Lots of women in burkini in the legoland water park

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 08/07/2019 20:07

In France, it’s a hygiene thing.
Men have to wear speedos, to check they are not swimming in shorts they have worn outside.

People expressing amazement at the question need to get a bit of a grip. It must be cosy to think racism is over but if you had even the slightest interest in the lives of others you'd know that's not the case. I know it's well meant but it really is a silly thing to say. Sorry op I know that's not the point of your thread but I think it needs addressing.

BlackeyedGruesome · 08/07/2019 20:10

I have seen several women in full length burkini style wear in the sea at barmouth, wales. I noticed as I am a red head who burns in march and I was also covered up in long trousers and long sleeves and it made a change to see others covered up. Lots of Birmingham accents in Barmouth in the summer.

madcatladyforever · 08/07/2019 20:11

Why is their such a fuss made about burkinis I have to wear one as I've had skin cancer and I'm not a Muslim. Even Nigella Laws on wears one so how dare anyone tell you what you can wear!!! Of course if they don't want your money......

SuperFurryDoggy · 08/07/2019 20:12

Not Muslim, but loads of burkinis at CP Elveden too. We go every year and I’ve never noticed anyone get a second look.

Muslim BIL and SIL tend to do cruises or Dubai. Not cheap though, and I’ll admit I wouldn’t personally visit Dubai at the moment due to human rights issues. No judgement to anyone who does go though - we all have our personal crusades!

MrsFezziwig · 08/07/2019 20:12

Yes to Zell am See (don’t know about the rest of Austria). I was told (though am prepared to be told that I have got completely the wrong end of the stick!) that it is connected to Muslim religion to spend time near lakes and mountains, and of course Zell am See has both. Would be interested to know if anyone can tell me more about this.

Shangrilalala · 08/07/2019 20:13

Penang in our summer months is indeed perfect. Many tourists from the Middle East, escaping scorching heat. Hotels are obviously very well set up for their Muslim clientele, both local and foreign. Food is brilliant and service generally great. Qatar airlines is doing some great deals from uk regional airports. A recent holiday there cost us much less than our last European holiday.

Bowerbird5 · 08/07/2019 20:16

Oh just thought what about The Scilly Isles. Really beautiful small beaches. very relaxing, boat rides to other islands and Tresco gardens are amazing.
Channels Isles too we went to Jersey and loved it. I can't imagine that you woud have problems there though you never can tell.

City break Edinburgh and then on to Pitlochry and Blair Atholl for the scenery. Inverness and along the coast for beautiful beaches. Not many people.

Ivestoppedreadingthenews · 08/07/2019 20:17

I’m not Muslim but live in a majority Muslim place in the U.K. No advice beyond what’s already been given but I’m so sorry fellow Brits have behaved so badly. I sincerely hope it’s the minority and that these people are heard and stopped. A good reminder to notice what it happening around us a bit more..
Hope you find a great holiday.

hotcrossbun4321 · 08/07/2019 20:23

I can't speak as a Muslim, but as a brown person I got a LOT of stares in Italy last year but have always felt very welcome in Majorca which is also beautiful, cheap and family-friendly.

Paddy1234 · 08/07/2019 20:24

Can't believe and rather sad I am reading this however just come back from CP's and they were quite a lot of families there - no problems at all from what I encountered.

stucknoue · 08/07/2019 20:26

Most of my Muslim friends go to turkey or Dubai, Egypt has been off the radar due to security. Oddly (to me) some do not wear hijabs on holiday because they said it's more of a cultural thing where we live than a necessity, kind of confused me but whatever goes ...

myself2020 · 08/07/2019 20:28

Definitely centre parcs woburn. not muslim, but i don’t like revealing clothes, so was very happy to see that i could wear something a bit more substantial in the pool (i wear 3/4 bottoms and long sleeved rash vest). several ladies in burkinis

MaybeitsMaybelline · 08/07/2019 20:33

Just got back from New York, lots of hijabs in the city, appreciate not your preferred holiday possibly right now but just sending you some support and observations for future holidays.

XingMing · 08/07/2019 20:37

Lebanon was once a very swanky resort for Muslims and non-Muslims. Not being a Muslim, I adore the speed of change in Dubai. I've been going there for 20 years and it's changed every time I've been back. And the last time I visited, I thought "Great! Young Arab people are going to the beach, with their families". To chat, hang out, drink coffee. It was very chilled out.

lljkk · 08/07/2019 20:37

I came on to say Zell am See but see it already came up! There were many women in Burkas, large Muslim family groups. Also very observant Jewish families & lots of Europeans & other middle Easterners. Incredibly diverse. tbf, the only place I really saw the communities mix was the indoor pool, though (very rainy day). Around 8pm got down to my 2 English kids, 4 German kids and 4 ?Saudi teens who seemed to suddenly click & start playing together.

It's very hard to climb a mountain in full hijab though, just too hot. Not looking like fun.
