To ask if you are Muslim where you holiday?

cardamoncoffee · 08/07/2019 18:42

Salaam!
Name changed and this is a genuine ask. I am desperate for a holiday but due to several bad experiences I am very wary to book anywhere in Europe in summer because of hijab/burkini. In my head I feel we would stand out a mile in a hotel in Costa del Sol or other such place. I don't mind for myself but don't want my daughter to feel unwelcome if that makes sense. Would also love to try somewhere like Eurocamp but the pool rules rules us out.

Just wanting any recommendations in UK or abroad where you have felt comfortable.

Turkey

DrSeuss · 08/07/2019 20:39

Friends use half resorts in Turkey.

Have you thought of Algarve in Portugal? It's beautiful and if you stay in Old Town Albufeira (more family orientated, less party atmosphere than New Town) or Vilamoura, you will see a variety of cultures.

We went last month (not Muslim but British Indian) and managed to get a beautiful villa a couple of mins walk from the beach for only £300 for 8 days. There’s a lot of British and Irish tourists there. Quite a few ladies with hijabs on the beach. No one batted an eyelid. It’s regarded as very safe too.

Dm if you’d like some links and areas on where to stay. I’ve been going there yearly since I was a child so know it very well

Wallywobbles · 08/07/2019 20:43

How about private rentals? Try a site like HomeAway.

Windygate · 08/07/2019 20:46

We've been to Northern Cyprus a couple of times recently. There were women in burkinis or other modest swimwear in our hotel and on the beach, no one commented. We booked through www.cyprusparadise.co.uk and I'm sure there are other travel firms.

FluffMagnet · 08/07/2019 21:08

As said by several posters - Zell am See in Austria. Beautiful place to visit and plenty to do with children too. Can hugely recommend going tobagganing Grin

Im not Muslim but...

If want to stay in the uk come to Bournemouth! We have seven miles of sandy beaches & plenty of Muslims come to visit as well as actually live here.
We're near the Jurassic coast & the New Forest too. There are Halal restaurants around.

Apart from that I'm just back from Lanzarote.
I stayed in the village of Matagorda near Puerto del Carmen. There were tourists of all nationalities not just Brits.
I saw Muslims who were I think local Spanish but in Islamic dress.
Also when I stayed in Santa Eulalia in Ibiza there were quite a few local women who were Muslims.

You could go to either of those places for example & avoid hotels altogether- get a villa or apartment on air bnb- my sister & I hire them as they're cheaper & we like self catering. Our last villa had a pool!

So many replies here starting with "I'm not a Muslim but..."

Where do you your Muslim friends tend to holiday OP?

Also, if you're on Facebook are there any Muslim groups you could join to get not just suggestions but also personal experiences?

JustOneShadeOfGrey · 08/07/2019 21:18

I’m outraged there are resorts you’re not welcome! I can’t recommend anywhere but pp have made good suggestions. It’s so sad that you’ve had to ask this question.

thegreylady · 08/07/2019 21:19

Parts of Turkey are lovely. I am not Muslim myself but my daughter in law is . Most hotel pools have a mixture of swimwear and no one looks or seems to feel out of place.

Kizziebel · 08/07/2019 21:57

The Gambia is slightly further away, not particularly expensive to get too and cheap once you're there. It's a muslim country but rather liberal (certainly when it comes to tourists) a lot of Lebanese ex pats. I had a lovely couple of weeks there a few years ago, can highly recommend it

NoSauce · 08/07/2019 22:04

My Muslim friends visit Turkey, Egypt and Dubai.

Chesntoots · 08/07/2019 22:30

I went to Penang a couple of years ago and for the first week I was one of only two "western" woman there. Most of the women were wearing burkinis and nobody batted an eyelid. It was actually cheaper for me to go there than 2 weeks in the Canaries by quite a considerable sum.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 08/07/2019 22:34

My family go to Wales!

Needmoresleep · 09/07/2019 07:40

Bournemouth would be fine. Miles of sandy beach. I regularly spot big groups of Hasidic Jews, Slavs, West Africans, South Asians, European language students....you name it.

The council rent beach huts by the day or week.

There are two Universities and several language schools so plenty of halal restaurants, and lot of Go Ape type activities around.

cardamoncoffee · 09/07/2019 11:38

Thank you everyone, taking it all in, some of the responses have pleasantly surprised me I just say.

Our budget is on the lower end of what is perhaps the MN average holiday so we have historically gone to places that seems to attract the Brits Abroad crowd who are drunk by midday and find it hilarious to shout insults across the pool Hmm. Will definitely look into the Alps, had no idea that is a venue Muslims attend so won't look completely out of place. There is a lakeside Eurocamp site a few km outside Innsbruck so that is a definite contender.

Thanks again, love hearing about all of the holiday destinations too 😁

I don't normally go out for holidays but there is a website call halal holidays . The people I know go to Mauritius, Morocco, turkey, Dubai, Bahamas. Some said that there is a nice beach area in Mamaris, Turkey. I personally won't like dubai as I didn't like it. It's very artificial with tall glaring buildings. And it's hot during the day, unless you like shopping then you can spend whole day in malls.

cardamoncoffee · 09/07/2019 12:54

bananasaidso assalamo alaikum 😄

Dubai also doesn't have any appeal for me, far too hot and no interest in shopping malls.
I'm on quite a few halal travel groups but most of them advocate long haul luxury holidays that are financially out of our reach and they all seem to travel from London (where you can get much cheaper flights from). We are hundreds of miles from London and would most likely need to get a flight which would bump up the cost massively, hence the affordable holidays are predominantly Spain.

I think the key is confidence too, I need to be more confident struting my stuff around the pool etc to shiw my daughter that we shouldn't care. People do feel uncomfortable at times being near us and I hate to think that I am ruining others experiences too, which I need to get over.

You can meet idiots everywhere and as a woman that can be: too covered, too uncovered.

Hoppinggreen · 09/07/2019 14:42

cardamon please don’t worry about making people uncomfortable just by wearing your usual clothes
You get judged in a thong OR a burkini - there’s no winning!!
Presumably you are in The North if so far from London? If so look st Jet2 flights from Leeds or EasyJet from Liverpool. I’m flying to
Portugal on Friday for £350 for 4 return flights, I did book it a while ago but you can still go pretty cheaply
