He was unbelievable tonight at ORNC. Encore was A Town called Malice. I am on such a high after that.

Love The Jam
Liked Some Style Council stuff but not so much
Enjoyed Stanley Road at the time but nothing compares for me to the vibrancy of those early Jam days
So yes and no I guess for me!

Ahardknocklife · 07/07/2019 23:51

A talent that I feel goes unrecognised and doesn't get half the credit he deserves. The mans been performing for what I believe to be 5 decades now. He is a true legend although I didn't enjoy the Spanish influenced stuff and the cover albums.

Serin · 07/07/2019 23:55

DH was friends with him at Sheerwater comp in Woking. He lived round the corner and they used to play tennis up the local park.
He says he was cool even at 11 Smile

Supergirlthesecond · 08/07/2019 00:00

The man was born cool, Serin.

I can't believe how good he was tonight and that he played The Jam stuff. Normally, bands/artists don't revisit old stuff if they have moved on as solo artists. (although Johnny Marr is playing a lot of Smiths stuff on his tour, I noticed - also very good). I never, ever thought I would hear Weller play a Jam track. I can't believe it. So, so good.

Sorry if I'm going on. I live with international students and none of them had even heard of him ....They are looking at me as those I am demented.

Sounds amazing, wish I'd been there Envy
It would be nice to see him headline Glastonbury.

Supergirlthesecond · 08/07/2019 00:03

@Ahardknocklife yes. He's living social history. Working class boy all the way.

And tonight he sang 'You do something to me' with his daughter as a duet - she has a beautiful voice and she sang it delicately

@Serin well he rocked it tonight. A real performance and he spoke to the crowd, made jokes. I always thought he would be really moody live and there would be no connection but I was very wrong.

Played for nearly 2 hrs - 3 encores.

I would like to see him play his more soulful stuff in a small club somewhere. Or the days when he used to play an impromptu gig in the Surrey pubs, just him and his guitar.

@BubblegumFactory how phenomenal were the Jam, eh? Raw energy, absolutely raw.

Who has that now that we can see? I just can't think of anyone who would come close to a young Weller and any of The Jam music.

I was there too Supergirl - it was amazing! Fabulous location and fantastic set from Weller. Would have loved it if he did Eton Rifles but though You do Something to Me was amazing. Had a bloody good night. Did balk slightly at £26 for a bottle of wine though.......

Supergirlthesecond · 08/07/2019 18:57

Yes it’s pricey. Honestly, I spoke to 4 people today who didn’t even know who he was. Musical God.

@MollysMummy2010 Fantastic set. I am still on a high. Can you tell?!!Smile

Written some fantastic songs, wouldn't say he's a great but up there with some of the best.

Whenever I hear him being interviewed though, he sounds proper boring, really annoying muso type. Remember one guy asked him what he did in his spare time, any hobbies. He just said his life was music and had no time for anything else... bit of a sado!

Apricotjamsndwich · 08/07/2019 19:18

I was there too. Woman behind me was shouting 'what a man!' and I have to agree. Really chilled and jolly atmosphere between hundreds of the oldest swingers in town.

ooooohbetty · 08/07/2019 19:21

YABU. I loved the Jam and saw them loads of times. Weller was always aloof and unfriendly with fans. Rick and Bruce were lovely. I saw him solo a few times but found him boring. He's done a few good songs on his own but that's it.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 08/07/2019 19:23

Oh! It seems I am not your people Smile

Met him once, in a work capacity. He pretty much ignored the 'hired staff', I certainly felt invisible, until his glass of water was empty...

I have also heard him talk to a couple of music journalists... he was interminable, droning and almost every sentence started with "I" - even Mojo has a difficult time making him sound exciting - and they love him!

Like with Springsteen and Dylan, I've often wnated to lie his music but never quite managed it - though other people's covers of Dylan are great!

barryfromclareisfit · 08/07/2019 19:29

Very, very unreasonable.

But, each to her own.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 08/07/2019 19:31

I know. And I am sorry. I did try my hardest, I promise. I loved The Jam, saw them twice. Smile

LauraMontreville · 08/07/2019 19:35

Bless him

Supergirlthesecond · 08/07/2019 19:57

@LauraMontreville I love that pic!

I agree with those of you who say he is moody - that’s what I was expecting but last night he wasn’t. I think that’s why it was so good. He talked to the crowd, wanted us to respond more, asked if we were enjoying ourselves, and the music was a real trail through history. Bit of soul, sc , jam , solo stuff. I wouldn’t have connected the man onstage last night with the Paul Weller I have known of over the years.

Obv nothing can beat the jam but to hear ATCM. He was fantastic.

Supergirlthesecond my DD has ‘found’ The Jam and absolutely loves them. She isn’t that keen on his solo stuff, which to be fair, is probably suited to a ‘more mature’ audience. She blasts them out loud, and I must admit , I love it Grin
I might also have given her some old Clash, Bowie, Sex Pistols stuff. And she loves it all! You can’t beat good music, however old it is.

Supergirlthesecond · 08/07/2019 20:13

@Bubblegum I was thinking that. At least new generations can find that music and hear it even if they can’t experience the gigs. The Jams stuff, as The Clash, etc is infused with that kind of young man energy. It represented something and although I am too young to have seen them they were on my radar through older sisters. Your daughter rocks.

He did look old but I think the smaller venue worked for him. Been trying to upload a photo but I WhatsApp’d most of my photos and video and it won’t let me! I can only do one of waiting for him to come on! I had a great evening and I am looking forward to who might be there next year as I just loved the venue. I hate Wembley arena and stadium.

@MollysMummy2010

Lovely place. Saw Noel Gallagher there last year on day of English football and he was so miserable. I wish I had seen Groove Armada on Friday as they were supposed to be good, too.
