About men walking around without shirts on?

sunniepoppie · 06/07/2019 12:30

My dad used to do this all the time and so I grew up not really thinking anything of it, but I do remember being refused entry to restaurants when abroad.

I also found it embarrassing as a teenager when friends would come round and my dad would always have his top off.

I’m now trying to encourage my son to keep his top on. AIBU?

Tbh in this heat I often wish it was more acceptable for women to go around shirtless too. It looks a lot more comfortable than sweating through a bra and a top. I think kids especially should be allowed to run round shirtless provided they have adequate sun protection.

BeanBag7 · 06/07/2019 12:37

I am not bothered by a topless male, especially a child. If anything I'm jealous because I'd love to be able to go around topless to

sunniepoppie · 06/07/2019 12:47

DS is an adult. Maybe you would be happy at going into a restaurant topless Hmm but most people consider it inappropriate.

Let him be topless when he is out and about, and obviously respect the rules for shops etc.

It's hilarious when the sun comes out in Scotland and all these oeely wally men got topless and end up blinding everyone with their whiteness for a day before going lobster red.

Best in a heat is not being shirtless, but have free tunic. It creates bit of a draft and cover. Or a kaftan. That's the absolute best

*peely wally even

Are you Scottish by any chance OP? I think this is such a Scottish thing - taps aff at any opportunity!

skybluee · 06/07/2019 12:55

I hate this, it happens a lot where I live. In communal corridors etc. So if I'm going to put rubbish out, faced with my elderly neighbour in board shorts and flip flops and nothing else, sweating. It's gross. Not just one neighbour who does it either. I'd love to be able to walk through the hallway without encountering this. It's one rule for men, one rule for us. Surely topless should be OK in public - or not. Not segregated by sex.

PettyContractor · 06/07/2019 12:55

I think being outdoors topless is OK, indoors in your own home is generally OK, indoors in a public place that isn't a swimming pool or gym, a bit more doubtful. (Actively participating in indoor sport topless should be allowed.)

bridgetreilly · 06/07/2019 12:55

YANBU.

Topless under 10: totally fine.
Topless on the beach: also fine.
Topless in your own garden or home: fine EXCEPT when there are visitors, especially women.
Topless on the street, in a shop, at a restaurant: not fine.

Stopandlook · 06/07/2019 12:55

My husband is from a hot country and absolutely hates this British trait!

SoupDragon · 06/07/2019 12:56

I think people should be "decently covered" in restaurants etc. Other than that I'm not fussed particularly. Do you feel the same with women wearing, say, just a sports bra?

TheQueef · 06/07/2019 12:57

Taps aff is an official weather status in Scotland along with Baltic.

PettyContractor · 06/07/2019 12:58

It would be fair to treat woman the same, and allow it for them to.

Like it or not, women's breasts are seen as sexual and thus not suitable for public display. Men's are not.

Lockheart · 06/07/2019 13:01

Tops shouldn't be off in public (obvious exceptions being beaches, pools etc). Absolutely no need to wander down the high street or do your shopping without a shirt on. If they manage it in Mediterranean countries I'm sure we can.

In your own home, go nuts.

TwistyTop · 06/07/2019 13:03

I live in a very hot tropical country and this isn't accepted here. The general rules are - topless at the beach, close to the beach, or in your own garden (including your front garden where everyone can see you) then it's totally fine. The rest of the time you put your top on. You certainly would not be allowed into a bar, restaurant or shop with no top on.

When you consider that our summer regularly exceeds 40°c I don't think it's unfair to tell British men to keep their tops on when it's barely tickling 30°c for an hour at midday...

Besides, if it's really hot then it doesn't help to get your skin on show. You just burn. You're better off wearing light breathable fabrics.

Taps aff Grin

Years since I’ve heard that!

Lipz · 06/07/2019 13:05

I don't mind topless men, even better when they have a nice body Grin I do though prefer people wear tops in restaurants. My next door neighbour goes topless in her garden the minute the sun comes out, as our walls are fairly low you can see right over, so no escaping those flat pancakes.

A lot of the blokes roon ma bit have tits as big as any woman’s. Granted, they do not give me the horn. 🤢

A lot of men here in Glasgow with "taps aff " should really have kept their "taps oan"

Feelingwalkedover · 06/07/2019 13:13

Better than your dad walking round naked which my step father used to do

It depends on where you are, at home I’m mainly just in pants or pants and vest. I will go topless at the park if it’s hot, as do many others which has its benefits, there have been some very nice sights recently on Saturdays. But only if I’m sunbathing/playing football, not if I’m in a kids playpark. But I wouldn’t walk around the street etc topless and I would never go in a shop etc topless.

Sorryisntgoodenough · 06/07/2019 13:15

I once saw a bare chested man in Tesco leaning over the produce to get something while scratching his chest. I saw his chest hairs fall onto the crate of food below Envy
