About men walking around without shirts on?

sunniepoppie · 06/07/2019 12:30

My dad used to do this all the time and so I grew up not really thinking anything of it, but I do remember being refused entry to restaurants when abroad.

I also found it embarrassing as a teenager when friends would come round and my dad would always have his top off.

I’m now trying to encourage my son to keep his top on. AIBU?

@bridgetreilly agreed!

Boinky · 06/07/2019 13:20

I'm in Glasgow too and sick of the sight of Wee Tam and his pal Big Boab strutting topless down Argyle Street as soon as the temperature reaches 20. No one wants to see your tats and boy titties, fellas.

S1naidSucks · 06/07/2019 13:22

OMG Sorryisntgoodenough! 🤢 That’s revolting. I think it’s disgusting walking around anywhere other than the beach/pool/ own garden, topless. The clothes don’t just protect you from burning, but the rest of us from your sweat. 🤢

Rezie · 06/07/2019 13:22

I dislike men being shirtless outdoors. Excluding the beach.
I don't like my bf being shirtless at home either. I cannot really tell him no since he should be able to.do whatever he wants at home. In the dinner table you have to be dressed.

gubbsywubbsy · 06/07/2019 13:25

My husband doesn't do it .. a neighbour does and has very point distracting moobs .. I find it very weird too.

HappyNOTdriving · 06/07/2019 13:31

Aye I definitely dinny get horn I get a bit o the boak wi a' the burnt paps waggling aboot in the sun!

ginghamtablecloths · 06/07/2019 13:33

It looks uncouth to say the least. I used to live in a seaside town and it was much worse than inland.

Sorry I haven't RTWT but if it hasn't already been said I believe that in some shops in New Zealand they put signs up, "No shirt, no shoes, no service" - maybe we should do the same.

Catypillar · 06/07/2019 13:34

DS2 is now old enough to learn some basic politeness but last year when he had just turned 3 he spent much of the hot summer body shaming the "taps aff" gentlemen of Tayside by pointing to them and shouting "bellies! Big big BELLIES!"

LaurieFairyCake · 06/07/2019 13:37

I don't like it.

There's a weird trend in London I only noticed yesterday - normal t shirt - hiked up over one shoulder so one half of the body is covered and the other half isn't Confused

I saw this on 3 different groups of young males yesterday

Bizarre

echt · 06/07/2019 13:40

It's grim. For me it's not an aesthetic but an etiquette/manners thing. Put it away. Cover up.

Goodenough06 · 06/07/2019 13:41

It does annoy me that women are not allowed the same option. It is really weird that we all have nipples, 50% of the population (have the option to) use them to feed their babies, the other 50% have absolutely zero nipple function whatsoever...yet guess which ones are considered illegal to be out and swinging free in public? If it was more accepted in the UK I'd definitely go topless on the beach and at outdoor swimming pools etc.
Not sure anyone should be browsing the frozen aisles with it all hanging out.

BeanoBrown · 06/07/2019 13:42

what bridgetreilly said
there is a time and place for nakedness whoever you are

Boinky · 06/07/2019 13:42

If they get hypothermia in their nips when reaching in for the petit pois and Fab ice lollies well let that be a lesson to them.

MonstranceClock · 06/07/2019 13:50

Doesn't bother me at all, is just a body. Britain seems to be quite squeamish about bodies though.
My neighbour looks like Chris Hemsworth, I think he should be shirtless more often.

Boinky · 06/07/2019 13:53

And in countries where people aren't squeamish about nudity men generally keep their shirts on in the streets.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 06/07/2019 13:53

catypillar well done to your DS.

Butchyrestingface · 06/07/2019 13:56

Not too many Chris Hemsworth doppelgängers up here in Glasgow. 🥺

Hence, burka up, lads!

AriadneesWeb · 06/07/2019 14:03

It’s gross and inappropriate no matter what you look like. People should be clothed in public. I don’t want to see moobs, huge bellies and back hair thanks.

DonkeyHohtay · 06/07/2019 14:05

Totally unacceptable and really downmarket. Almost as bad as vests.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 06/07/2019 14:07

DS is an adult.

Then for God’s sake keep your beak out. An adult man being told by his mother how he should dress is cringeworthy.

In terms of the general topic, it doesn’t bother me at all personally. Businesses can and do say they won’t allow entry to shirtless men and that’s up to them. I can’t really get worked up about it as an equality issue - I can’t pee standing up either, but that doesn’t mean we should ban urinals.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 06/07/2019 14:08

Sorry I haven't RTWT

Seriously? It’s two pages.

DdraigGoch · 06/07/2019 14:10

It's one rule for men, one rule for us. Surely topless should be OK in public - or not. Not segregated by sex.

Like it or not, women's breasts are seen as sexual and thus not suitable for public display. Men's are not.

The beer guts you see every time it's a sunny day are usually not suitable for public display. Why is it that every time the sun comes out, the nation's slobs decide that they're Poldark?

Boinky · 06/07/2019 14:13

I can’t pee standing up either, but that doesn’t mean we should ban urinals.

Okaaaaaaaay. Confused

VladmirsPoutine · 06/07/2019 14:16

If you look like Chris Hemsworth then so be it. Have your top off even in the darkest days of January if you so wish. But there's something so unbecoming of it. Even men in vests don't look good.
