To think we need a campaign to improve morals?

To think we need a campaign to improve public morals? I know I sound like Mary Whitehouse, but public morality does seem to be in decline.

YANBU but how it could ever be enforced, I don’t know.

Jemima232 · 22/06/2019 19:23

Can you elaborate a bit?

What public immorality is bothering you in particular?

Herbalteahippie · 22/06/2019 19:24

Can you give a fr-instance?

Eaudear · 22/06/2019 19:24

What kind of stuff are you talking about OP?

GertrudeCB · 22/06/2019 19:25

Erm, YABU . Very.

jennymanara · 22/06/2019 19:26

What I mean are things like wearing fetish gear in public, sex in public, men looking at pornography on trains, etc.
I do think a certain standard of behaviour in public should be expected and be normal.
And I am not talking about enforcement, more a campaign of people saying come on this is not okay, this is not the kind of country we want to live in.

You’ve been on a night out in Reading haven’t you? Wink

Jemima232 · 22/06/2019 19:28

You are kidding, aren't you?

You say you don't want to be like Mary Whitehouse......then you create a post she'd have been proud of.

WhatdoImean · 22/06/2019 19:28

Morals are defined by "what is considered proper" in society. It is natural that what is proper changes over time.... The shock (horror!!) of women being ALLOWED to work outside the home etc. A couple of generations ago, this would have been most improper!

It is a feature of pretty much EVERY civilisation that they think things are falling apart. A lot of the original Greek plays had comments such as "It was different in my day; I was off fighting wars, not laying about doing nothing". Societies, and peoples' expectations within them changes, leaving many people feeling uncomfortable, and wanting back what THEY had when they were taught how to act.

I suspect, it is not going to happen.

jennymanara · 22/06/2019 19:31

Maybe that is true @WhatdoImean but I don't like the way our society is moving.

What's the difference, in your veiw, between public and private morals? Why does one need improving, but not the other? What form would such a campaign take? Who would decide which public Morales one should campaign for?

So many questions. I suspect there will be so few answers

isabellerossignol · 22/06/2019 19:31

What I mean are things like wearing fetish gear in public, sex in public, men looking at pornography on trains, etc.

If disliking that sort of behaviour makes me like Mary Whitehouse, so be it.

When I was younger I saw her as a boring old fuddy duddy who hadn't a clue. Now that I'm older myself and I see the damage done to young women by the constant stream of porn seeping into society I'm finding myself much more sympathetic towards her.

LadyWho · 22/06/2019 19:32

I suggest you move to the USA if you want to lead a puritanical life OP. I'm American and one of the things I find refreshing is the comparatively lax regulations regarding language and social norms in the U.K.

I'm not saying porn on trains is cool, but I'm from the southern part of the US (Trump country 🙄) and it seems like you would fit in well with their rigid social views on morality.

Jemima232 · 22/06/2019 19:33

Sex in public?

Where?

jennymanara · 22/06/2019 19:34

user I only know the private morals of those I know very well, so I would not pretend to know whether they have declined or not. But I can see with my own eyes that public morality has declined. And I have explained the kind of thing I mean.

OP posts:
YourSarcasmIsDripping · 22/06/2019 19:34

wearing fetish gear in public, sex in public, men looking at pornography on trains, etc.

I don't see why or how anyone would find this acceptable or be against these people being told it is unacceptable.

Jemima232 · 22/06/2019 19:35

I have to agree with LadyWho

You should move to the Deep South.

You sound awfully judgemental.

jennymanara · 22/06/2019 19:35

Ladywho I would not fit in with Trump's views at all as they are racist.

OP posts:
WhatdoImean · 22/06/2019 19:37

@jennymanara

You are allowed not to like anything you want.... But please do not impose your dislikes on me. If you start doing that, if it becomes "normal" that someone gets to tell you how to live YOUR life, then we are on a track to keeping things hidden, where "appearance" (perhaps family honour?) becomes all important. People being "disowned" by their family because they got pregnant etc.

You may feel I am taking this to an extreme - and in some ways I am, but what you want - the right to establish what is acceptable by YOUR definition - leads to a society that thinks it can "morally" regulate everyone else...

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 22/06/2019 19:38

I wonder if the OP and title were worded differently she would've had more support.

WhatdoImean · 22/06/2019 19:41

Incidentally - the "sex in public" thing - used to be very very acceptable in ancient Rome.... As mentioned, different cultures, different rules.

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 22/06/2019 19:43

AIBU to think that having sex in public, watching porn on train and going to the supermarket in full gimp suit is a bit too much? It's fair enough what they get up to in the privacy of their own homes, but there is no need to make everyone else party to their particular enjoyments.

I wish there was a campaign about this or at least that appropriate rules of conduct (like on trains) were enforced every time.

2010Aussie · 22/06/2019 19:44

I'm sure if Boris Johnson becomes PM it will be top of his agenda

jennymanara · 22/06/2019 19:45

Yes I know when anyone talks about morality the accusation that this will lead to single pregnant women being castigated gets thrown about. As if we can't condemn sex in public and publicly worn fetish gear without condemning women. It is rubbish.

OP posts:
YourSarcasmIsDripping · 22/06/2019 19:45

Funnily enough there was someone protesting about people holding hands on here yesterday. Some people even agreed with her.

Moan about sex in public? You prude...your pearls must be chocking you.Hmm
