Hopefully the pic has attached....

Me and DP can’t agree on who has right of way in this scenario.

If you are joining a main road from a minor road (turning left) with another minor road directly opposite whereby a driver is turning right onto the main road (so you are both joining to go in the same direction), who has right of way? The car turning left or the car turning right?

Had this situation this morning and am not sure which driver was correct or if it’s a politeness/ manners thing rather than a rule.

If the diagram has attached, I’m the blue car (turning left from minor onto main)

Road was clear enough for left turn but not really for right turn IMO

The blue car

Stressedout10 · 06/06/2019 19:35

If I remember my highway code correctly the blue car has right of way

PookieDo · 06/06/2019 19:35

Reason is: they are turning into the same lane of traffic so only have to give way to one direction and red has to give way to 2 directions

KMoKMo · 06/06/2019 19:36

I have no idea if there is an official rule but I usually go with whoever was there first. Bit more difficult if there has been a queue of traffic either side.

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 06/06/2019 19:36

Blue car has right of way.

Laiste · 06/06/2019 19:36

The one turning left.

I feel it in my water Grin

Pppppppp1234 · 06/06/2019 19:36

The blue car as you are turning into your line of traffic, if you were turning right (blue car) then the red car would have right of way

mum11970 · 06/06/2019 19:37

Blue car as red car has to cross another lane of traffic, unless red car was already making the manoeuvre before car blue reached the junction.

theydontknowweknow · 06/06/2019 19:37

I'd say blue as red would have been crossing blue's path?

woodhill · 06/06/2019 19:37

Definitely blue car

overnightangel · 06/06/2019 19:37

Blue 🚙🚙🚙

Jaffacakebeast · 06/06/2019 19:37

Blue, a lot of tariff lights are set up like this

PookieDo · 06/06/2019 19:38

@mum11970

This is also true
If they already pulled across before blue reached junction it would be red

Paddybare · 06/06/2019 19:38

Yes, blue car has right of way

Sunseed · 06/06/2019 19:38

Car turning left has right of way, though in my experience common courtesy is that whoever reached the junction first (and has therefore been waiting longest) goes first.

VelvetSpoon · 06/06/2019 19:41

Car turning left. The car turning right is crossing a line of traffic; the car not crossing goes first.

Unless you live near me and drive a massive BMW/ Audi/ Porsche Cayenne in which case, as the right turning driver, you will just pull into the middle of the road anyway and expect everyone to make way for you!

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 06/06/2019 19:43

Blue car, not crossing a lane of traffic, joining in the same direction. On the basis both cars got there at the same time, if red has started pulling out when blue got to the junction, blue should wait

Omzlas · 06/06/2019 19:44

Assuming that the road is a single carriageway, the blue car. Because the red car has to cross a line of traffic to even get to the correct direction of traffic

Ihatesundays · 06/06/2019 19:44

Blue car.

PettyContractor · 06/06/2019 19:44

If they both proceed as if the other doesn't exist, driving at the same speed, then there would be no collision as the blue car would get to the common location a car-length or three before the red car does.

If they did manage to collide, it would be because the red car was driving fast enough to catch up with the blue car and drive into their side or rear.

So I don't think you even need a rule to decide this, there is no conflict if the situation is exactly as described.

I suspect the actual problem might have not matched the description.

YeOldeTrout · 06/06/2019 19:45

In real life I'd find I would make eye contact with the red car to make sure they weren't going to try to rush it; otherwise what others said, the blue car has a less complicated maneuver so goes first.

Justaboutawake · 06/06/2019 19:52

Phew glad I was right! Will gladly boast to DP (long time driver vs me as a novice)

For further info, blue car was there first and had already started pulling out. Red car was being a twat and pull out really fast causing blue car to brake hard to avoid collision. Yet it was red car that gestures to blue car that she was a wanker

Blue.

But this is why I love the 4 way stop in South Africa.

HomeEdRocks18 · 06/06/2019 19:56

The blue car as you are turning onto the main road in the direction of travel and you don't have to cross another lane

Justaboutawake · 06/06/2019 19:56

For what it’s worth, red pulled out in a stupid angle and super fast that would’ve taken out the front lights of blue car
