Hopefully the pic has attached....

Me and DP can’t agree on who has right of way in this scenario.

If you are joining a main road from a minor road (turning left) with another minor road directly opposite whereby a driver is turning right onto the main road (so you are both joining to go in the same direction), who has right of way? The car turning left or the car turning right?

Had this situation this morning and am not sure which driver was correct or if it’s a politeness/ manners thing rather than a rule.

If the diagram has attached, I’m the blue car (turning left from minor onto main)

Road was clear enough for left turn but not really for right turn IMO

Thanks 1can'tpickaname. It's been 30 years driving. I've forgotten the highway code!

TabbyStar · 06/06/2019 20:58

Although we have a T junction in our town that's give way to the right, so traffic going straight on has to give way to right turners from the bottom of the T, which people also get irate about. Both approaches have dashed lines across the junction and give way signs. It's not surprising people get confused!

Car turning left

Oakmaiden · 06/06/2019 21:26

Ahem - Tabby - I can't quite picture that. Perhaps a diagram?

TabbyStar · 06/06/2019 21:44

So it's like this, only the road with the blue car is one way (in the direction the blue car is going). There are white broken lines at each junction, and the red triangles are give way signs at each junction. According to rules described above it should be cars going straight on that have priority but practice is to give way to the right. I have to admit I don't really know why as I didn't think we had give way to the right in the UK.

Sorry to ask this but this set on the road has always bugged me.... On OPs original picture... what would happen if the red and blue cars were both turning right? So opposite directions but both crossing lanes of traffic? If that makes sense?

thegreatcrestednewt · 06/06/2019 21:53

I like your near-miss diagram! 😂

thegreatcrestednewt · 06/06/2019 21:54

Upsydaisy - then the person who was there first has priority.

GabsAlot · 06/06/2019 22:01

first car there usually not that it always works out

Awrite · 06/06/2019 22:02

I'm surprised your dp thinks the red car would have right of way.

I'm the red car every morning. I always give way. Would be absolute madness not to, regardless of who got there first.

Don't ask his opinion again.

Justaboutawake · 06/06/2019 22:07

@Awrite in fairness to DP he didn’t get the benefit of my diagram, just a description Grin

Although, his (bellend) answer was “I always right of way because I’m faster than anybody pulling off”.... can you tell he has a big car?!

Then they should both Mari EE at the same time - forwards and right.

It’s one of the reasons that cutting corners is a dick thing to do and yet you see it all the time Angry

Veterinari · 06/06/2019 22:10

Mari EE = manoeuvre Hmm

UpsydaisyandIgglePiggleareatit · 06/06/2019 22:34

Your diagrams were excellent OP you should definitely show him and this thread!Grin
@Veterinari
This is what I thought, without cutting corners both cars can safely pull out without hitting each other right? I’ve usually gone down the whoever was there first route though like @thegreatcrestednewt suggested because corner cutting seems to be the norm. Loooooong time ago, this road set up... waiting to turn right, car across was there first so I let them go. Another car pulls up whilst I’m waiting, it’s clear so I go forward and then start to turn... bloody git then comes out, I slam on brakes and he goes absolutely nuts at me. Happy now to know I was right to tel him to bugger off!

Sorry to momentarily hijack your thread OP! Blush

GabsAlot · 06/06/2019 23:11

Well op hes a knob then

JaneGlorianaVillanueva · 06/06/2019 23:21

Without reading any other replies my initial thought is the blue car as they are not cutting across any traffic, only joining the flow of traffic.

I'm now going to read the other responses and see what other people say 😂😁
