Is steak better rare or medium rare

I had a heated debate with my dh if steak is better rare or medium rare. What do you prefer?

Rare unless it’s a ribeye which tends to be better if medium-rare due to the marbling. Anyone who prefers more than medium might as well order the chicken.

depends on the steak.

for me, if it's a leaner cut (fillet or rump), then i prefer it rarer.

if it's got some fat marbling through it (sirloin, or - my favourite - ribeye), it needs cooking longer to melt the fat or it's too stringy, but the fat makes the flavour much better (imho).

for a ribeye in a restaurant, i'd always ask for medium.

I find rare tastes very - animally, if that makes sense.

Steak is better cooked to your preference. DH likes his blue, DF and I like ours rare, DM likes hers medium, and DS likes his in the form of a hamburger. We all think we eat it in the best way, and wouldn't give you a thankyou for someone else's.

Steak: it is totally up to you. There is no universal ‘better’.

As everyone tastes things differently (directly because of genetic differences in taste buds) and because of other factors (sight, smell, cultural experience) you can not compare what two people taste. And even if you could - so what? We’re all different!

It depends what cut it is.
For me I have all cuts blue! Or as rare as possible if some places are funny about cooking it blue.

Before I got pregnant I would say blue steak however since having my baby I tend to like it medium now. I think my mood effects it so I'm no help as I have a foot in each camp.

The helpful comments are interesting - so if someone hasn’t had steak, it’s useful for them to know that fattier cuts might (might! It’s still personal) benefit from longer cooking.

But just throwing out that stupid over used unoriginal line about chicken? It doesn’t make you sound as witty as you think it does. It’s what nobs say.

Medium rare. I personally think any more cooked than that is a total waste of meat.
