Is steak better rare or medium rare

I had a heated debate with my dh if steak is better rare or medium rare. What do you prefer?

Rare unless it’s a ribeye which tends to be better if medium-rare due to the marbling. Anyone who prefers more than medium might as well order the chicken.

My dear, innocent Gran in Law ordered her chicken well done at a steak restaurant after hearing everyone order their steak. Except they mixed up her chicken and mine. It was like fucking leather.

I do love a nice rare fillet steak, but enjoy the others between medium-rare to medium.

Just wipe its arse and slap it on the plate.

kalopali · 02/05/2019 11:56

Well done. I don't like the taste of blood.

Since when does a steak, rare or otherwise, taste of blood?

Lllot5 · 02/05/2019 11:59

I like mine rare. But it’s all down to taste I guess.

Ninkaninus · 02/05/2019 11:59

It depends on the cut, actually.

But as a very general rule, I like mine rare. Medium rare works well for some cuts too.

Mmmmm we’re having steak this week and I can’t wait.

DarlingNikita · 02/05/2019 12:00

Personal taste, innit, but medium rare for me. A rare one once made me feel quite ill, and I prefer it warmer than rare ones generally are.

I've been veggie for decades and have never had a steak but I secretly judge people who order them well done Grin

Why? I like beef well done. What's it to you or anyone else?

Most restaurants I eat out sat normally say medium rare is how beef or all meat comes unless otherwise specified. One restaurant said the meat came how it came and they would not take note of any preferences!

speakout · 02/05/2019 12:10

As others have said depends on the steak.

Over the years I have gone to liking steak well done, to rare, to blue, back to medium, now I would struggle to eat a steak at all.

I find the aesthetic of chewing on a dead animal difficult to swallow ( literally) I eat very little meat at all, but a steak would be a step too far for me these days.

kalopali · 02/05/2019 12:13

but I secretly judge people who order them well done

As do most chefs hence the “keep for well done” where they hold back the least appealing pieces for that purpose.

The rarer the better for me, I love a good steak tartare, otherwise blue rare.

Ginkythefangedhellpigofdoom · 02/05/2019 12:34

Iv not read the thread yet but my answer is it depends on the cut and the age and if your really trying to get it right how it's aged doesn't it?

Or it's personal preference like toast or milk in tea Grin

Dp likes all and any steak rare/medium so just a touch more than rare but not as much as medium rare.

My dad used to say il have it so a vet can revive it.

I don't eat meat

NoSauce · 02/05/2019 12:34

There’s no better surely? It’s down to the individual preference.

CylindraceousNicholas · 02/05/2019 12:35

Medium-rare for me

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 02/05/2019 12:37

Blue! I like it such that a good bet could have it back on its feet Grin

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 02/05/2019 12:37

Vet too!

Happynow001 · 02/05/2019 12:38

I'll have the chicken. 😁

BadLad · 02/05/2019 12:39

Rare for me. I'd never comment on a dining companion's choice though.

Going to all-you-can-eat steak house tomorrow.Wink

whohaa · 02/05/2019 12:40

Blue. There is no other way to eat a steak.

Grimgle · 02/05/2019 12:40

A big fat rump, medium rare for me please! 🤤
