Do you let your dog upstairs?

I have an 8 month old golden retriever puppy who is just amazing but bloody huge at nearly 30kg already. But I also have a 4 year old cat who is completely blind (and we think has been pretty much since kittenhood).

The cat and the dogs get on absolutely fine and up until now he hasn't been allowed upstairs as I've kept that as a sort of safe haven for the cats.. But I'm starting to feel a bit mean...

He has a nice bed and is allowed on the sofa etc.

So wondering if you let yours roam or if upstairs is a no no?

Our dog is allowed upstairs. However, your cat was there first so if you think it will upset her, then let the dog stay downstairs.

It's not mean for your dog to stay downstairs at all and it's good for your cat to have the space.

Nope not allowed upstairs. I wouldn't want her in the beds I don't want mud and fur where I sleep.
Not mean at all. She is free to lie on all the sofas and has her own bed and is a much adored pooch but never goes upstairs.

No I love in a bungalow but he’s allowed everywhere. I don’t restrict him.

Our poodle sleeps in bed with us... so he has to go upstairs!

I used to let my Labrador upstairs but brushing and hovering the stair and floors and bedding daily got annoying so when we got our second we kept them downstairs. Sometimes (drunkenly) husband lets them sleep with us for night but that's a nice treat as opposed to them thinking they can go up whenever they like. (she used to sneak up through the day for a nap!). If dogs not used to it I would suggest leaving it be, it'll be better in long run especially with moulting!

No because he marks upstairs for some reason,I've never let other dogs go upstairs either though.

Yep! He's 32kg and sleeps on our bed for some of the night or on our bedroom floor.he has run of the house durig the day as well

Yes. She pretty much runs this place. But if it's going to upset your cat I'd not let her.

Live in a bungalow too! But cat is allowed to sleep on the bed, dog is not.

No.

Our dogs are big buggers and have all the finesse of a herd of wildebeest, so they stay downstairs. The GSD comes up to play socks sometimes but that's it. They also like to find the cool floor spots, which aren't the same upstairs as it's all carpeted.

DDs dogs sleep in their rooms with them. They've done that for so many years that it's the norm and the dogs are too old to change it now. But they're comparatively small dogs and far less wildebeest- like!

Forgot to add - the cat goes where she likes. All she does is sleep.

Always did when we had dogs. Our first would sleep on the carpet on my side of the bed. 2nd (we also had a cat at the time) would sleep ditto - but very often joined us on the bed during the night. Nice big bed so never bothered us.
On weekend mornings or other lie-in days, both dog and cat would frequently join us.
Lovely memories of both young dds, plus dog and cat, on our bed on Christmas mornings - D and C very interested to see dds opening their stockings!

Nope, she has the run of downstairs but has never been upstairs. We used a stair gate when she was a pup but don’t bother these days and she has never attempted to go up. She is a heavily shedding, medium to large breed and we learned our lesson with her predecessor - far to much hair in the bed and takes up too much room!

He is a gorgeous dog but he’s big and smelly when wet and muddy. No sofa no jumping up (basic manners required in everyday life for him) and definitely not allowed upstairs on the cream carpets!

Mine isn't allowed upstairs; I have never had a dog that is. He is very large and has to be touching me pretty much all the time - it's nice to have a bit of space that is mine to not be followed around and I couldn't imagine trying to have him sleeping on the bed.

Ddogs are allowed up while I do housework!! They camp out in my room while I get dressed if they can get past dh! Due to my allergies they don't sleep on the bed sadly!
As a dc my ddog slept on my bed and the school called my dm in to say it was unhygienic!
Dcats don't get past the utility room or play chase and howl all night!

No way! Our dogs are only allowed in the kitchen and the snug that opens out onto the garden. I like a clean house!

No. My dog is allowed on one sofa and is ruined in a lot of ways, but not allowed upstairs.

We also have an 8 month old golden retriever! I don't mind him coming upstairs (under extreme supervision, he is a known sock stealer) but DP does not like it as he prefers our bedroom clean and not full of 'dog stink' which is fair enough. It's personal choice I think, but if you spend plenty of time with him then he'll be fine downstairs. I know loads of people who do not allow their dogs upstairs, and we still aren't sure if we will let ours up there very often. Ours is now 31kilos, it's just too much puppy to control around all our clothes, pillows, etc He goes around looking for trouble when we aren't looking, and he is sooooo hard to stop when he's really focussed.

Yes she has gull run of the house. It's her escape from the kids as their rooms are downstairs (very odd cottage).

Yes, 2 sleep downstairs on the sofas and 1 sleeps on our bed.

Nope ours isn't allowed upstairs either. I have a toddler so the toddler gets to play with her toys freely upstairs, while the puppy gets to free roam downstairs. They do also have play time together downstairs and in the garden, but with both being so young, they both need their own space

No. We have cats. They are allowed upstairs and dog isn’t. It’s not unkind. It’s kind to the cats! Also up and down stairs would damage the joints of my giant dog.
