Do you let your dog upstairs?

I have an 8 month old golden retriever puppy who is just amazing but bloody huge at nearly 30kg already. But I also have a 4 year old cat who is completely blind (and we think has been pretty much since kittenhood).

The cat and the dogs get on absolutely fine and up until now he hasn't been allowed upstairs as I've kept that as a sort of safe haven for the cats.. But I'm starting to feel a bit mean...

He has a nice bed and is allowed on the sofa etc.

So wondering if you let yours roam or if upstairs is a no no?

Never as a small puppy except from baths when we'd carry him.

We have an 8 month old Aussie who's about the same size as your goldie and he's only recently been allowed upstairs when we tell him he can be, but not just when he feels like it. He will occasionally wait at the bottom of the stairs hoping he's allowed if we leave the door to the hallway open, and if he's mostly clean and I want to potter upstairs then he comes up with me/gnaws on his antler when DP is on the PC. He doesn't just run up though and will go back down when he's told to, and definitely isn't allowed on the beds.

Pack theory as described by Cesar Milan doesn't even apply to a wolves in the ways he thinks it applies to dogs Hmm

Golden retrievers aren't like other dogs. You have to understand the breed and they don't realise they aren't human 😂 yes yabu, let him on the bed. Also, can we see a pic?

Nope nor on the sofas since we replaced our old leather sofa with new fabric ones. When he was little he would chew anything left on the floor so DC2 keeps his Lego etc on his bedroom

Isnt there something about young dogs not doing stairs until they are fully grown? I seem to remember my vet telling me 30 years ago. Especially larger dogs

Yep- my 65kg doberman sleeps on the bed with me. Saves on heating bills. He also sleeps at the top of the stairs

Our cats live upstairs & dogs live downstairs.

We have 2 4.5 year old working Cocker spaniels and 2 house cats (Birman & Ragdoll) who are 9&10. It’s just not fair on the cats when the dogs are being too full on.

If we didn’t have the cats I would let the dogs upstairs x

We have 2 Golden Retrievers (yes I am boasting) and have owned/been owned by dogs for over 30 years. None of our dogs are allowed upstairs or on any furniture. If we sit on the floor they can climb on us. Stairs are not recommended for GR puppies because they are prone to hip problems. They shed constantly and are often wet and muddy and sleep perfectly comfortably in the kitchen.

When we had 3 young DC and their friends around it was better for everybody to have defined spaces - we've never let children sleep in the dog's beds either.

We have also always had a cat until recently and the cat has always been in charge and had free run of the house - anyone not wanting a cat on their bed had to shut their bedroom door!

Nope, I hate pets in beds. Our dog isn't allowed on the furniture either, but he's never tried as he came from a rescue and had been trained not to about the only thing he was trained to do.
I hate it if my parents bring their dog as he goes upstairs and gets straight into the bed. It's ruined many sets of bedding and he stinks.

@Yas1996 Cesar Milan is awful and completely discredited by the rest of the dog behaviourist world. He may make exciting tv that producers want, but his theories and methods are fear based and detrimental to dogs in the long term.

Yes but we only have him and he is a short hair whippet. If I had cats and they were upstairs first I wouldn't

No. Our 11 week old puppy stays in the kitchen which is very big and have doors to the garden. This have helped immensely with toilet training and sleeping at night.
The kitchen is tiled and easy to keep clean. He toilets outside and sleeps through the night in his cage in the kitchen.

Yes but the cat gets the top bunk to himself.

Nope not allowed up stairs. He snuck up once and pooped on the landing once and in my DS room so definitely not. He doesn’t do that anywhere else in the house. He has he his own bed downstairs and is happy in his own den

We let our cats sleep on the bed - sometimes they sleep right next to our faces on the pillow! But the bed gets changed frequently and they don't seem to shed much fur.

If (when) we get a dog, I'd allow it in the bedroom but not on the bed I think (put a dog bed or similar in the bedroom for it). Although how long that would last I don't know.

aweedropofsancerre - sounds like a dirty protest to me 😂. Ours did that until we allowed him up then never did it again. Bastard.

Our dog does occasionally wander upstairs if he's looking for his beloved father but he sleeps downstairs including during the day when he has the run of the house, it's what they are used to

SpamChaudFroid · 16/04/2019 15:18

I would allow it, but he cats guard the stairs quite fiercely, and they were residents before pup moved in so what they say goes. I do hope they eventually accept him though, and he can sleep on the bed too.

@anothermansmother..I feel your pain! My DM never stays overnight now because she knows I can't bear her thinking her dogs can go anywhere.. Because they're 'guest dogs' 🤨🤨?! Our own dogs stay in the kitchen and entrance hall/boot room

No, my dog has run of the downstairs but never upstairs.
